Computers in a Pool Room.

What do you folks have to say about having a Computer (or Computers) in a Pool Room, so that tons of information can be dispursed to any & all players & customers?

"Information", meaning....

League Play (schedules & brackets)

Tournament Play (schedules & brackets)

Lessons on Line

E-Mail

Equipment & Gear sales

Player Profiles

Pool Room locations

the Daily News

Online Pool Tournaments

and so on.....

I think every pool room should have a computer and if the establishment can afford it a web-cam.

Most every golf course I go to has a computer in the club house to track handicaps, I'm sure the software could be written to track pool statistics as well.

I like most of your other suggestions too.

Well I would say, if you don't have one by now,(or your pool room doesn't) you are way behind the times. I have had one for years.

I don't see myself using it. However I guess it could be pretty cool. You'll probably need one on the side to check "MYSPACE" so the rest of the computers aren't hogged.

Cost?

Just curious how you charge for use of the computer? Does it work on a coin mechanism or do you just put them on the clock like pool? What rate do you charge? How do you protect yourself legally if a minor has access to it. Do you have XXX blocking software? If someone posts from your pool room negative or defamatory remarks are you legally liable? Do you make people sign a release form? I would be terrified because of legal liability to let the general public have access to our computer. We already have 3 convicted child molesters that are on probation coming in THAT I KNOW OF. If they started chatting with young girls on MY computer...I know who the media would go after if it came out. How do you protect yourselves from all the legal liability that may cost you a fortune in a lawsuit? Very curious to hear feedback on this issue.

Take into consideration the way most players treat house cues and tables. It wouldn't be long before it was broken. If they don't own it...they don't care about it.

Unless a roomowner has unlimited funds, I think it is a dumb idea, if you want to use a computer use your own at home. Just like you are now.
Everybody sure has their idea of how to spend a room owners money.
Besides cue and cushion do any of you on this thread own a poolroom? And do you know what it costs just to pay the electric, rent and taxes...not to mention the everyday cost? Maybe this thread should have been called--I was just daydreaming if I had a poolroom...I would...

I had one in my other room for about a month, only charged $3.00 per hour to use it.

One guy checked his email once or twice and it sat there.

I sold it to pay the electric bill one summer month when it was slow.

Maybe just the wrong area ?

How about just offering free WIFI to your customers? That way they can access the internet with their own laptops and you're only out the $40-$50 for the wireless router.

Better put a chain on your lap-top in a poolroom. Johnnyt

there're some people that bring their laptops into the pool hall i shoot at and they use it to play music and watch videos. they turn the volume up so theydon't have to pay to use the jukebox. it's really annoying. it wouldn't be bad if the people that went there could use it and still respect the people that just showed up to play a few games

Well if that's the type of room we're talking about then you'd better chain up your cues too.

You don't need a computer at the pool hall to keep up with League standings etc.. in my League, I input the score into my Treo 650 as soon as the match is over and the players pay me their dues. Many of them then say "So, can I see the updated table now?". I hit the web page with the updated standings after their match and they can their position right away. There is no need to print out standings/fixtures at the pool hall. All the players have their own personal home page on the website, can contact each other if they have to reschedule, and see every result from the entire League.

my pool room says it has wifi - not sure if it charges or not. anyway being a bit of a computer nut as well as a pool one i thought this would be really good. i have a sony psp so i thought i could browse the web a bit on it when i'm having a break or whatever. it's been about a year and i still havn't bothered to try it. and like i say, i'm into computers!

so i think it's not worth the effort to be honest. people are there to play pool, not use a computer.

I've been in the IT industry for around 14 years now. I'd say free wifi isn't a bad idea at all. Actual free-standing computers in there, no way ;)

If anyone needs software coded to track table time, player standings, or whatever; let me know.

Computers in a pool hall - yes!!!

Jack Nicklaus golf with paramutual betting. Show it on a big screen.

On local tournaments, keeping the brackets manually is a REAL DRAG. Get a decent program and project it on a big screen, or wall.

I think that computers are the best thing that has happened in general.

Just look at all the friends we have made just being HERE!!!!!

Off the track

I think this post got off on the wrong track. I do not think the intent was for computers for public use but for business use. I don't see how most businesses can run without one these days. It makes things so much easier. I do let public use the business computer occasionally when they want to check their e-mail, fantasy football, or for a poker game when it is a well known regular customer. Depends on the time and the circumstances. I also use it to show pool matches online if possible.
For all other purposes, bring your own, I have wireless through the internet jukebox. You can also answer a lot of questions that come up at the bar, or trivia answers. Just google. Settles a lot of disputes.

this one dive I used to hang out in had two computers built into the wall with sealed access panels. The only thing the people could break was the keyboard.

The guy who owned it was a total laid back west coast type making it on the east.

For the ultra tech savvy pdas with wifi or blutooth hang around there.
