Voting is now closed at Onepocket.org and Tony Fargo is the 2008 Inductee to the "Bank Pool Hall of Fame"

I'm really proud of Tony and consider him a friend. I'm very happy to see him get the "official" recognition he so well deserves. If someone see's this thread and see's Tony... Please tell him John in Sherman,Texas say's hello, congratulations and... CALL ME DAMMIT!:thumbup:
 
yeah... He REALLY plays great. I wish I could get ahold of him but the number(s) I have for him don't seem to get an answer. I think he hung around some place in poplar bluff, Miss.
 
I've seen a lot of Tony's battles, but those with James Christopher in Memphis on the bar box were classic. Congratulations to a deserving recipient.
 
Tony is a down and dirty, old fashioned gun slinger. He got in the trenches with just about everyone the last 25 years. And when it comes to Banks, he robbed the world. I can only think of a few guys like Truman, Larry Price, John Brumbach, Shannon, Brian Gregg and Jason Miller who could play him even. Prior to them, maybe Wade Crane, Buddy, Varner, Fusco and Gary Spaeth. Tony is on a very short list of great bank poolers. Top ten for sure the last two decades.

This is one game where the WORLD still has NO chance against the Americans. I will gladly stake our top five Bank Pool players against ANY five players from the rest of the world. And you can bet high on this match. Europe and Asia are all invited, NO ONE is barred, and I didn't stutter. Round up five International players and come see me at DCC. I'll find my five Americans there. :)

There have been MULTIPLE requests for TAR to get some kind of Bank Pool Action going. I'd love to see something like this. Sure, alot of the top players can bank.... BUT the "ART" of Bank pool is quickly being lost to the new generation of players. Perhaps, as discussed before on the forum, the new 9ball rules(pushout after break) and 1 foul ball in hand have really diminished banking skills by the top 9/10 ballers... 1 pocket is about the only game nowadays where strong banking skills are a requirement for top flight play.

Jay, did my ex-pal Artie get to you? Have his efforts at diminishing my history gone that far? I take umbrage that my name wasn't included on the "hang out with Fargo" list. Since he is still alive and can be contacted for verification, great a banker as Tony was, and I was his biggest supporter for the Bank Hall of Fame, Tony's record with me was O'for. We only played a few times (and I'm talking about at least 15 years ago), but he hasn't cashed the first ticket with me yet. Johnston City 1972, I played Wade Crane 9 to 8 and after I banked 9 and out he quit. Johnston City 70,71 or 72, played Buddy banks on the bar table in the Show Lounge, won easily. A year of so later, in Nashville tourn. he would only play if I gave him 8 to 7. I did, but I didn't win, but he wouldn't adjust. Fusco would never play, Varner would never play, and because of my relationship with his father, Joey, Gary and I only played once, in a tournament, where he won it, beating me 23 to 21.
This is not just my ego speaking, although you know I have a large one, but I'm trying to sell bank pool books and bank pool DVDs and a lot of the AZ'rs are younger and take serious stock in your opinion, so I had to speak up and defend myself. I'm sure it was just an oversight on your part and I forgive you.

Sorry Freddie for not including you on my list. I was thinking a little more currently, like the last 15-20 years. You and I are relics of another era, like it or not. As much as I admired your fortitude, I have a hard time putting you in with Truman and Tony. Or Wade Crane and Gary Spaeth either. Crane reached his peak in the 80's at Banks.

I will say this though, your knowledge of Banks is unsurpassed, and you have elevated it as an accepted art form on the pool table. Before you came along and wrote your books, many people looked at Banks as a "gimmick" game, with great players like Romberg, Piggy Banks and Fargo mere specialists.

We used to view Bank Pool geniuses like Eddie Taylor, Cannonball and Bugs as some kind of freaks. Now people know that they were great pool players and their extraordinary banking ability was a formidable skill. Thanks for your contributions to the art of Bank Pool. You do know it has always been my favorite game and you have always been my favorite player. :thumbup:

All I can say, and I'm NOT just blowing sunshine up his butt,.... is that Freddy IMO has played a major (if not single handidly) been responsible for the re-newed interest in all things bank!
Anyone that has read or seen his books, video's, blogs... whatever, will quickly understand just how much this guy knows about bumping balls. I REALLY need to get that double DVD.

If just HALF of what I heard about this guy in his prime is true... all I can say is WOWZERS!~

No offense to you Freddie but Tony tells a different story about you and him matching up. For almost 20 years now tony has been the top five bank pool players and the best fullrack bank player in the world. Noone else has put up a challange at the DCC to all players (including the pioneys) and yet no one has stood up to play.

FWIW, i concur with TONY being the BEST full rack bank pool player for apprx a 12 yr period starting in the early 90's, furthermore, if you couldn't put a hitch in his giddy-up he played ALL games at high speed.

His matchups with JAMEs C. were legendary and when they hooked playing 1P up for a couple of dimes per game it was too short but extremely sweet...
 
funny thing is Tony thinks his 1pocket game "sucks" (his words) I'd LOVE to have a game that sucked that bad:D

I aint countin' "lately." I'm on Soc. Sec. and triple strength Viagra now. We fooled around a few months ago, and he spotted me and won. I'm talking about playing in the old, original Billiard Cafe. It's been closed for over 20 years. We played on table #9 by the counter where I dispatched a whole lot more guys than him. However, I was at Derby City last year when Tony challenged ANYBODY to full rack banks for $5,000 and didnt get a bite. I also watched him crush Bugs in Columbia SC at Gradys tourn. playing banks for $200 a game. Bugs returned the favor, however, at St Charles IL., for $500 a game the next year. Tell Tony he better not talk too bad about me because I'm gonna be the one ringing him into the HOF this year.
