Considering a carbon fiber shaft for my Adam cue. Brands to look at??

I have a McDermott Defy stuck on one of my Lucasi butts. I love it and the added bonus is that it is made in the USA.

I sold 3 of my ob classic shafts. I was getting older and wanted to try some cf shafts. Bought a Cuetec cynergy and a Jacoby black. I like the Jacoby better because it dont have a clunk sound when I shoot. Otherwise they shoot about the same to me.

For me the Ignite 12.2mm is still leader of the pack.

It has (for me) noticeably lower deflection then the Revo 12.4 and Cynergy 12.5, the deflection is on par with the Revo 11.8 and the Cynergy 11.8.

I will say that the Cynergy 12.5 delivers a LOT of power, but besides the deflection I also profer the feeling of the Ignite.
How do you feel about the stiffness of the shafts? I've played with friends' Pechauer Rogue, Predator Revo, and Cuetec Cynergy, and personally use a Viking Siege. The Rogue and Revo were slightly larger diameter and much stiffer than the Cynergy and my Siege. I didn't shoot enough to get a good feel for the deflection of the others, but I'd estimate that my Siege is equal or slightly lower deflection than a Predator 314-3. To me, probably the biggest influence on which one to buy is how I liked the stiffness. I can't say that any is better or worse, but at least on the cues I tried them on, the Rogue and Revo felt like I was shooting with a steel rod. Not in a bad way, but it seems like the Siege and Cynergy have just a little give to them, although I think less than a typical wood shaft.

I have an Adam cue that I purchased (I believe) in the early to mid-90's. We bought our table in late '91 so it would have been after that. I am thinking about getting a carbon fiber shaft for it. I have recently been playing with a JFlowers cue with a 12.5mm CF shaft and really like it. I've come to realize that I miss playing with the Adam cue and would like to "update" it.

The cue has a 5/16 x 18 joint. I would like to stay with the 12.5mm shaft

Looks like Cuetec has one in the Cynergy line, and Mcdermott in their "Defy" models. Bull Carbon offers one with a 12.25mm shaft that uses a removeable insert instead of a set threaded mount. I was able to test fit a Bull Carbon to the Adam cue today and it did feel really good. Any other brands/models that I need to check out?? Or am I being foolish for considering spending $400 or more dollars on a 30-year old cue??
I got a Adam cue I bought in Dallas in the mid-70’s, I really love it, I have replaced the linen wrap with leather, had a new shaft made, put Kamari tips on both shafts. My wife purchased this for me and it’s one of my prized possessions. I have a Nova, 2 Tiger LD shafts and a Cuetec 12.5 CF shaft, it’s hanging in the closet. I play with the Adam cue daily.

The carbon fibre shafts, espescially the ones with an extremely short ferrule do not compress much at all, all the give is in the tip. So on shots with center ball or just a touch of side they can feel much harder then a regular shaft, espescially if you're used to for example a Predator 314-3 or Z-3 that have very soft ferrules.

But the actual stiffness of the shaft (as in how much does it bend if you push on it from the side with a certain force) is pretty similar to wooden shafts. Of the 3 I mentioned the Revo is probably the least stiff, then the Ignite and the Cynergy is the stiffest.

I have a rogue and like it a lot. They can make any joint style with a quick phone call if not listed on the site. My friend has the defy and i do not like the flashy design that runs the length of the shaft. I prefer flat black.

Whyte CF shaft is after talking to a few upper tier cuemakers who have tried most CF shafts the best playing CF shaft. Check out their website for the specs etc.

I own a Defy and don't know of any flashy design. Mine is black on black. You must be talking about the logo in grey.

If you had a classic 1993 car that was still in great shape, would you feel foolish for spending a lot of money on some super high end expensive new tires?

The Adam cues from back then look great, play great, and are well made. I've seen a lot of different recommendations for shafts here but nothing regarding the weight of the shafts and how they will affect the balance of the cue. Shouldn't that be a fairly large consideration? What does the butt weigh empty (without weight bolts) or with? You gotta have the feel in the hands and stroke to match what the eyes tell you to do. Will the shaft/butt combination do that because the shafts are a good bit lighter.?

Good questions regarding the weight and balance. I have been thinking about those very things. I would have to reweigh the butt and shaft as I have forgotten their individual weights, but if memory serves the combined total (currently) is 20.5 oz. A bit heavier than I expected. I would like to get that down to 19.0-19.5, and perhaps from 18.0-18.5. I am hoping that the existing weight bolt is removable and can be replaced with a lighter unit in order to achieve the desired weight and balance.

I shot someones Predator REVO CF shaft recently. That damn "Ting" hit drove me crazy! Do all ya REVO users wear earplugs??

Something else to consider is the kind of Taper you desire on your shaft. Conical? or PRO taper.
I believe,(last I checked), REVO only comes in a conical Taper.

Adam cues that I've seen all had removable weight bolts and could be taken in or out with a regular screwdriver.
With these lightweight shafts, it's hard to say what the best weight for YOU will be. Feel and touch is different for
everyone. Don't hold yourself to a weight range or prejudge what it "should" be. If you can get a bunch of screws
that fit the butt, cut them down with a hacksaw at different weights and see which weight combination produces the best results for accuracy and touch to get the CB where you want it to be. Anybody that brags and says they can pick up any cue at any weight or balance and play the same tells me they're probably right. Like crap.

I don't notice the ting all that much. Also the 12.9 and 12.4 Revomare pro taper and the 11.8 is a hybrid conical.

As has been stated before, the best thing to do is try all the shafts out if you can. It also depends on what type of hit you are looking for. If you are looking for a soft/quiet hit, then the Defy shaft is something to look at.

This could be as I prefer thinner shafts (OMG, that didn't sound right!)
Anyway, I was looking for shaft diameter @ 11.8 - 12.25 with a PRO taper. Very few vendors offer this config, and if they do it was quite pricey, (over $400)..
At that price,..... I need to spend considerable table time to seeif I like it or not.
