Conventional shafts

With all the hype of low deflection shafts and the pros that use them, it got me thinking, which top pros still use conventional shafts. It seems like the majority are using low deflection but this could just be my perception from advertising. Please name any pros that still use old school maple solid shafts.

Top level pros tend to use the equipment they are paid to use...so, when it comes to purchasing my own equipment, I discount pro endorsements.

Agreed. All pro endorsements should be taken with a grain of salt. Just because a pro has his/her picture on something, doesn't mean it's good. (See: Archer, Johnny and Scorpion Cues; Fischer, Allison and Cuetec Cues; Deuel, Corey formerly with 5280 Cues).

I feel exactly the same way. Just curious which pros still use the conventional shafts.
 
I dont know who uses what shaft, but id just about guarantee that they use what they want, not just what they are paid to use. If Archer wanted to use a predator shaft, he'd use one. He might not say it, but he would use it. They are not going to use any equipement they dont like, or cant perform as well with just because they are paid to use them. Worst case, they might sand off the predator or OB logo, and call it a Cutec! lol! Just like the pro golfers used to do way back when.

I'm pretty sure there are advertising laws that prevent that sort of thing, not to mention it wouldn't sit too well with their sponsor if they were somehow found out to be using a competing brand while under sponsorship.

Their sponsors would absolutely dump them, and possibly sue them (depending on the contract they have) if they were doing this. Don't you remember what a big deal it was for Tiger Woods to go strictly with Nike for his equipment sponsor (with the exception of his putter)? At the time, they were making an inferior product compared to Callaway and Titleist, just to name a couple. However, Tiger forced Nike to raise its standards and they caught up with the curve.

Once a player is under an equipment sponsorship with a company, they use that equipment and that equipment only. It's part of the deal.
 
yes they use the equipment they represent. but what they are using may be custom made and not resemble what you get to buy from the company.

That is not altogether true. If a player is sponsored by Viking and they like the Jacoby jump cue and OB break cue better, Do you really think they will use only Viking products because thats their sponsor? I highly doubt it.

sponsors man!!!!!!!!! if you pay them they'll use it. that's my guess anyway
 
I seem to recall many players skirting this issue by just using the Sponsor brand for the butt of the cue (which doesn't matter much) and then using whatever brand they want for the shaft. Predator would probably get mad if you use an OB2 shaft with a predator butt... but I'm pretty sure at some point a cuetec butt was mixed with a different shaft.

I'm with sniper. No player is going to tolerate a stick if they don't 100% like the hit.

On the other hand, maybe some of these pros actually believe this simple concept that a lot of people just pay lip service to: the stick doesn't really matter.

Which gets to the heart of the mater.

Its not the bow or arrow, but the indian behind the bow and arrow.

That is: one can adjust to practically any cue and shaft (and tip) and play to their abilities. It just takes a little time to make the adjustment.

Top level pros are not top level pros because they play with X or with Y but because they practice and play to their abilities (sometimes even beyond.)
 
Didn't Jasmin Ouschan get Predator and Mezz to collaborate on a cue for her? I think is was that Predator wanted to sponsor her but she did not want to give up her Mezz if I recall correctly.
 
A friend who is a pro player, not high profile by any means, had a sponsorship from a cue manufacturer who had their version of a low deflection shaft. He, my buddy, was not enamoured with their shaft and so he played their butt with a predator shaft, which he preferred.

He did, however, wear their shirt. :wink:

All seemed to be okay, but again, he wasn't a high profile player.

mezz and predator have been doing stuff together for years. they've even got a line of cues that only come with predator shafts

Advertising Laws ?? No, sorry, but paid endorsers don't need to use or even like the product they promote. Michael Jackson was a Pepsi endorsor years ago and he did not drink soft drinks.

Obvioulsy, it would not sit to well with a sponsor if they actually told them !!! But they are pool players afterall......

I gotta disagree here too. While the pros can beat the hell out of me with a tree branch, that doesnt mean they can perform just as well with every cue out there. They are for sure way better than me and most on here, but I'd bet they would agree that they can play better with some equipement versus some other equipement. Dont get me wrong, I agree with the whole indian and arrow thing, but some bows are higher performance than others.
