I have know Kim Davenport for 22 years, but havent seen him in years 93 I think was the last time, anyways he was knocking the balls around for a couple minutes and then set up a shot OB in the center of the table the CB in the jaws so you have to jack up just a little. He missed it the first time, second time he blasted it in the heart of the pocket. He hasnt seen me hit a ball in years I was a C player last time. I said "gimme the cue" I set up the same shot, It was one hell of a cue, I dont know who owned it, I didnt really look at it, I blasted the ball in the back of the pocket-just like he did. He Said "Wow you hit that sweet, guess I havent seen you play in a while "I only hit that one shot and man it was great, Kim was my role model 20 years ago and to just get up there and shoot that shot perfectly with no butterflies etc. Was strong for me. It was on a GC5 with pro-cut pockets. I handed him the cue and said "thats enough for now ;) ". Didnt rattle-just did it and believe me I wanted that ball to go in fast and hard and it did the CB did slow roll into the pocket 1-2 seconds later I hit it so straight. That shot has my confidence where its never been before. Not folding up around the big boys, Archer saw it and perhaps Earl, I cant remember who was all there, and it didnt matter. I'm far from being a champion but I'm now one shot closer. Watch out for Fatboy...

P.S. I'm not a one trick pony either. I'm ready after all these years I feel something in me I never felt playing.

Back in the early 90's, Kim was at the River City Open (Texas State 9 Ball Championships) in Austin, TX. He picked up a couple of object balls out of a tray and set that shot up on an old tight snooker table. Jacked up and fired it in.

The guy sitting next to me asked Kim if he wanted to bet something on the shot. Without hesitation, Kim said the window was open so I jumped in.

Three shots later and $300 lighter in my wallet, I was a believer.

I've tried that shot many times and Fatboy, you've made it one more time than I have. Good shooting!

It would be hard to find anybody with better mechanics than Kim, and that is pretty much what that shot is all about, so it sounds like yours is coming along too. I make that shot more often three rails in the other corner than I do straight in. John
 
regarding Kim Davenport.

I had the privelege of sitting down with my brother and Kim for some coffee the morning that the Swanee memorial in 06 started. This was not long after Kim hadh had his eye surgery and he played well in the tournament the times I saw him play. I hope he's able to make a full come back and play like his old self. He seems like a great guy from the conversation we had and I think that the sport can only do well with people like him in it....
 
Pool has been blessed with the reappearance of Fatboy. Behind the scenes he has helped out a lot of players already. He always has their best interests in mind. I've been fortunate enough to see this first hand.

This is a generous man with a big heart and a love for the sport of Pool. We could use a few more like him.

He'll probably kill me when he reads this. Of course, he still has no chance in Banks!

Kim came to my parents pool hall a couple of times to do exhibitions back when he was the tour player of the year in '90. He showed me that shot as well, he told me the only real way to make that shot consistantly is with good mechanics. But the object of the shot was not just to make the OB but to follow it in with th CB. When I started playing after a 10 year layoff that was one of the shots I would work on every day for a few minutes, it is a great tool to preach proper mechanics. Its been said before, Kim has the best mechanics in the game.

Crazy, huh? I think thats the one real advantage I had being the son of a pro level player. My dad showed me the proper stance, bridge, and mechanics from the start. That's probobly why within 3 months of starting I was beating old guys who'd been playing 30+ years. Not having to overcome bad habits is a way to really accelerate learning any game.

I have shot that shot as a practice drill since roy futternick told me to practice it in 87 so for me dead straight is easy now, I dont practice it shooting over the pocket but its the same shot. i do have good fundmentals but.....I can miss any ball at any time, I look like I play better than I do sometimes, my attention span isnt there and I sometines just distracted and dog a ball. If I could get past that I would be 2-3 balls ahead of myself,

Jay didnt get any of my $$$, We were busy with the Mosconi Cup and were gonna play tonight, I called him and he said he was at the airport, LOL he got scared and left town before we could play. He can run but not hide. Full rack banks? ouch hell I dont know how to play 9 ball banks, I never played banks in my life til Jay came along, he is up 6-2.

thanks it was great not folding up under pressure, infact I do better around the champions, when I was into body building I trained with top pro's I was small compared to them but got pumped up being around them instead of being intimated, when I was younger it was the oppisite If kim was watching me I couldnt hold a cue, now I grabbed the cue and drilled it, and hell yeah i'm bragging 'bout that shot, feels good too. I dont brag often. When I play Cory Harper all I do is rack for him-he beats me worse than anyone I have ever played,,,,ouch but that will change, i just have to play better.

Thanks for asking, eye is stll fuzzy and a bit clouded when I play, I have to stand up higher to see now, i think it will never be the same but it wont hurt my game much, i'm scared to have a 2nd out break, i have the meds now and know what to do, getting the problem on thanksgiving and not getting it treated was the real problem. I can almost read the computer now with it-sometimes I can-if blink and things on my cornia move a bit, it is slowly getting better, it might be the same but I doubt it.

Fatboy, great shot under the pressure !! And wise decision to quite while you're ahead. I had this crazy setup I did when taking lessons from Lou Butera when I was in high school. I had three object balls lined up in a straight row, and 2 balls in between them again in straight row but half ball visible. I managed to jump ALL 2 balls including the cue ball into the corner pocket !! They were like hopping rabbits !! And I quit my trick shots for the day after that :D No idea why the heck I did that setup though :o

Sorry to hear about your eye; it sounds scary. It sounds like you are adapting to it and moving on. Hopefully it will get better. Best of luck with it.
