"CORRECT SIZE" END MILL FOR FERRULE

what the hell are you going to do with an end mill???
I want to install a canvas phenolic 1 piece ferrule/ tip on my break cue....
just wondering what size to make to the hole in the shaft....
I WONDER-
SHOULD I SLEEVE THE FERRULE OVER THE SHAFT
OR MAKE THE TENON, ON THE FERRULE INTO THE SHAFT??????

make a tenon on the shaft........ about .280 in dia......... thread it 5/16-18............
drill out the one piece ferrule/tip with a 1/4 drill.......... tap it 5/16-18............. add 5 min epoxy.... screw it on

Kim

Why not remove the ferrule from your break cue then examine what tenon it has FIRST ?
Then you can fabricate that canvas to match .

Kim, thanks for verifying how I replace a tenon. Just a thought though; I started out at .280, then tried .285 on recommendation from another cue builder, then finally settled on .288 for tenon. I found that this size really makes the ferrule screw on tight. I don’t use live tooling, therefore a smaller dimension may work better. Thanks again.

This is how I like doing it.

With live tooling I like a .310 tenon to start out with. Cut about .030" deep threads in a couple of passes and sand it lightly until the ferule screws on oh so nicely!

.030 a side is tight and right . .015 a side ain't tight.

Did someone recommend .015" a side? Wouldn't even get the threads started with a .310" tenon. .030" deep is .030 per side. Then if it's too snug you can go another thou on another pass and repeat as needed until it's just how you like it.

.280 tenon on a ferrule with .250 hole gets .015" a side of threads .
