Counting trick

Does anyone know the trick that you line up all 15 balls in sequence along a rail. You then have someone move any number of balls, keeping them in sequence, from one end of the row to the other. You then back up to the table and then without looking tell them how many balls they moved. I have forgotten the key to solving this. Thanks in advance for you help.

It is a very difficult math trick.

You get to ask the person, how many balls did you remove. Did you remove them from the high end, the low end or the middle.

The you ask the person to add all the numbers of their balls up and tell you what the number is.

See where its going here?

If he says I took 3 balls out of the middle and they add up to 12. Then, you think, Hmmm, 12. Could it be 3,4,5?
Then you tell him that the 1 and 2 and 6 thru 15 are left.
Pretty simple really.

Then you do a Chris Banks off and pull out a calculator.

Other than that I have absolutely no idea how the trick is done but it sounded good when you were reading it, didn't it.

Actually I Googled the crap outta your request and I couldn't come up with anything close. Sorry.

It would be a great trick if someone knew how to do it.

Your constant mentioning of me wouldn't have me too worried, but you also provided me with a red rep without a valid reason. Kind of a "just because" red rep. Would you be willing to explain yourself?
 
ChuckR...This "trick" was invented by Willie Jopling decades ago. Although Bill showed me the trick many years ago, I have forgotten it too. Sadly, perhaps the 'secret' died with him. :( It is not the the same thing as shown in the Jimmy Moore video. The balls are all lined up on the rail.

If this is how the trick is supposed to work, take the sum of the balls (12 in this case), divide by the number of balls removed (3 in this case), and that is your median number (4 in this case). Since the other player said that he took out 3 balls and you know 4 is the middle, 3 and 5 are the other two.

Let's say he told you that he took out 4 balls totalling 46. You would divide by 4 which gives you 11.5. Your median balls in this instance are 11 and 12, and the outer two are 10 and 13.

Its a very simple trick

what you need to do is before you turn your back to the table just remember what the ball is on the left , lets say its the 3 ball so this is how the balls would look before they moved any
3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 1 2 keep in mind the ball on the left is the 3 now you turn your back and let them move any amount they want, lets say they move 6 balls now they will line up like this
9 10 11 12 13 14 15 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
now with your back to the balls feel and count to yourself 3 balls from the right and the answer is "6"

As long as they dont move the ball out of sequence it will work everytime.... Just dont forget what the starting ball is on the left :)

PS it works better if you dont make it look too easy, take your time to give them the correct answer, even start to move the wrong ball so they think you dont know the answer then grab the correct ball and roll it foward. I use to do this trick all the time, kept them stumped for days and they never figured it out till I told them how to do it

John, Thanks so much for supplying me with the solution. I knew the trick was not very difficult but couldn't get there on my own. I have had a lot of fun with this one and you are correct about keeping the sequence. Thanks again for the help.
