Craigslist Cue! Need your advice...

Hi AZB!
I always keep an eye on C-list to see what comes up. The other day I see someone post an old Adams cue for $50. The picture isn't great but the cue looks to be a basic with not points. I talked to the guy and he says he's had it since the 70's and he's kept in good condition and stored it in the case. He says he cleaned it up, put a new tip and it still rolls straight all around...

I plan to be in his area tomorrow anyways so I was gonna go check it out and probably make an offer. I'm only considering picking up it because I hate to miss out on a quality cue for cheap. I would only keep it as a spare or lend/sell it out to a player I know so it will not be my main player.

Please share your opions on old Adams cues...

Should I be worried that it's so old?
What do you think it's worth?
How would you rate this cue's quality?

Adams makes a decent cue. I think it's a okay deal for 50 bucks so long as the cue is straight and not banged up. The shaft looks clean for a 40 year old cue.

I don't think you are getting ripped off.

How do they play? Subjective, but I think they play fine
Should I be worried that it's so old? Not if it has been taken care of.
What do you think it's worth? I would think 50 is ok but offer 40

If it's straight and not all dinged up, it seems like a very good deal to me. I play with a cue I bought in 1974 for $125 (they said it was a Palmer, but it's not. It has Palmer and Adam's "influences" with what may be an identical joint as this Adams), and it still rolls true and plays as good as day 1. The Adams name from this era is recognizable/reputable and you could probably sell it for a decent profit if you choose. I don't see how you lose out on this. Nice find!

I just found a 70s Adams cue on c-list a couple weeks ago. I attached a (bad) pic of mine. I think it is a steal for $50.

I don't even look at craigslist often because usually its somebody selling a lucasi for $300 type sale. I think I had the jackpot on that Adams cue. He was asking $75 and I called him and picked it up the same day he posted. I told him when I picked it up that my opinion was he may be able to get $200+ for it but its all about finding the right buyer.

Here's an update AZB!

Got the cue last week and it is better than expected. Looks to be an older Adams with no markings or stamps. The butt seems like it is Rosewood with nice figuring. It definitely shows its age with some marks that show use but no major damage. It's got nice synthetic linen rings around the old school brass joint that looks sweet. Even the ferrule and the tip are in decent condition. I shaped up the tip on there, it looks to be an old Elkmaster, and it hits great now. My favorite thing about this cue is that the bumper had been removed for that good old "tap, tap, tap".

When I got it from the guy he had said that he picked it up in the early 70's and played with it for a good decade. He mentioned he paid $185 for it new. I showed it to Roger from Corsair Cues and he said that it's in great vintage condition and not to change too much on it. He estimated that for him to build one now would cost him at least $300.

How much would you say it's actually worth now on the second market?

I paid $25 for it at a billiards store, brand new in 1975. I bought it for a good friend for his birthday... sadly he was killed in an accident before that day came and I put the cue up and will keep it, unused, forever.
