I remember you liked Spiderman - he and I are playing scotch doubles together in Vegas this year! :)

Eric, I think those two pictures were taking in different years - the first probably in 2003 and the second in 2004? when I was there. My seat was next to the man with the gray beard and the black hat ;) and across from Grady and Randi (who are fighting their own battle now - see http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/sc-randi).

OMG! You are right, SPetty. It WAS two years back to back. The one with Randi, Grady and Chris was the year Chris came to VA with Roy. BTW, I was sitting between you and the man in the black hat (Roy)... I got up and took a step back to take that pic.

The other pic might have been the next year, when all the Cass' came. I was sitting next to Heide that year.

I guess the first thing to go is the memory.

Eric >can't remember what the second thing is...

Spike

Hey Spike,

I have a few stories about your dad, most are archived on CCB (Billiards Digest). I'm glad you're doing well, I've seen your name pop up as a top finisher in a couple of tourneys recently!

Say hi to your mom for me and feel free to pm me, I have an old cell phone pic of your dad from VA, one year.

Eric

Hey Spike,
You probably won't remember me but I it was great meeting you, your Mom and Dad at the Riviera too many years ago. I remember the Magical Riviera Beer Disappearing Carpet incident. I laughed so hard I was sore the next day!
I seem to recall a female in your life named Mary...I believe she was your pet gerbil. It's great to hear you're hitting them straight.
Regards,
Rip

I'm happy to report more good news about Spike...
1) he took 2nd in an ACS/Pechauer tourney this evening &
2) he took 2nd in my 14.1 league that finished up this week.

I'm really proud of the kid. He's so motivated right now and the confidence is flowin'!

ACS: Although Spike stumbled just before the winner of winners match this evening, he stormed back to meet Jesse Bowman in the finals. Spike showed some moxy by taking down the first set 4-1 of the finals, but he just couldn't hold off the triple-tough Jess...hell, not many can! I can't remember the last time Jess DIDN'T win a local ACS tourney.

14.1: If I hadn't put a "91 & out" run on him to steal our 14.1 league match, he would have taken the league championship. He had me down 147-109 before my run out.

Anyway, you're a winner in my book, Spike. Keep working hard and you'll have plenty of first place checks in your future.

I'm proud to say that I'm the guy with the gray beard sitting next to Chris in that first picture that's posted. That was the first or second year that I got to enjoy his company. Chris was just a terrific guy to play with and was always willing to offer help with your game. I remember him having a dead eye stroke, too.

Spike, I'm so glad to see you carrying on with your game. I remember what a solid stroke you had when I met you at the Open back in 2004. I'm also glad to hear that you're doing well in school and you have a girlfriend. Balance is everything in life if you want to be happy for the long term.

Stay well! Give my best to your Mom as well.

Brian in VA

Wow...That's some SOLID play! Congratulations Spike!

This brings back memories. Chris and I pm'ed each other many times on CCB. I never met your dad Spike but he sure was a good guy, not to mention his playing ability. I went over to CCB (have not posted there for a long while) to read through those old pm's. Wouldn't you know it, they appear to be all gone. Of course they date back to 2002 but I could not find any from Chris. The web site must have deleted them. Hey, good playing Spike, your dad would be very proud of you. Keep up the fine play and say hi to your mom for me.

Rod

Great playing Spike!! Dad would dammed sure be proud. I'll be anxious to watch you play one of these days. Say hi to mom. JimS

Hey, there's me in those pictures. That, I believe was in '03, the year of Hurricane Isabel. Those are actually my pictures that I took. Great memories!

I have some heartfelt PMs from Chris from back from the CCB that I stored as documents because they meant to me so much back then as they do now. I have the rest of those pictures from the Yukon in 2004 (that first shot was in 2003). I also have more of the Aiardos from 03 and 04 at the US Open.

Thanks Wendy!

Last week I told Eric that I believed that you may have posted these on CCB about 4-5 years ago. I went back to look for the post, and I'm not even sure if it exists anymore. Are the old threads gone forever? If you have the rest of the pictures - can you post them?

I haven't been on CCB in a looooong while and don't know if our posts are in the archives or not but yeah, I'll post the pics up again later tonight.

Hey Wendy, where ya been??

Hurricane Isabel...remember how the whole town had no power?!

Are you sure those are your pics? Maybe we took the same shots. Either that, or I took the pics with your camera cuz you're in one of the pics and I'm not... I might have emailed mine to you to post (I didn't know how to get the pics hosted back then)?

Anywho, hope all is well!

Bump...anyone have any pics or stories to share?
Sure. Chris Cass was a great human being. And I'm a better person for knowing him. As an internet poster, he was one of the early "real pool players" that was posting on the web-base forums. He wasn't an armchair player, nor did he talk in theories. As much as I appreciate technical theories, the internet pool forums which were born from techincal participants woudn't be the well-rounded discussion groups that we have today without early participation from Chris Cass and his real-world experiences and humble discussion style.

Chris "Cass" Aiardo was a pool player friend that I met through the internet. He was a great human being and a hell of a player. We (the internet pool playing community) watched agonizingly for a couple of years as he fought pancreatic or stomach cancer. It was amazing that he survived his first bout and was cancer free for a year or two. When it came back, it swiftly took him away. He is one of my heroes:

After his first round of his ultimate battle, he went into closely watched remission for several months. During that time, I gave Heide this:

--------------------------------------------------------

To the Warrior

(for Chris Aiardo Jr.)

With graying hair and steely eyes
The warrior rests from fight
His mission to defend himself
With cunning, heart and might

His weapon held in leather case
Of wood, instead of steel
‘tho no true harm befalls the foe
The battles are for real

The latest struggle, worst by far
For the enemy will always hide
The champion strong and shows no fear
His courage will abide

And when the conflict comes to end
Defending the final blows
He will return to his wife and his son
And home, the warrior goes

-Fred Agnir 5/3/03

That's my story. This his poem. Those were my tears.

I knew Chris thru the CCB and met him at the 2004 Open. From what I could tell he was by far the best player in our little group at the CCB tourney. A vary soft spoken and humble guy too. And he was very upbeat, despite what he was going thru (esophagal cancer IIRC).

Strangely, what I rermember most was how he took care of his SW cue. We played 17 rounds or so that day and he broke down and packed it safely away between every round. I wish I had the motivation to do that.

Good job on the grades Spike. Keep it up. A good education is something nobody can ever take away from you.

The only pics that I was able to find on my computer were the ones I've attached. Unfortunately, it was before I had a digital camera and so while I have the prints, I'd have to find and scan them:
