CSI has me confused????

I thought that the invitational 8 ball and 10 ball were replacing the us open 8 ball and us open tenball, yet the press release on AZ's home page regarding the invitational is the second time I've seen them make reference to the us open 8 ball and tenball as events that CSI produces in the present tense, are we going to see the independent events of the us open 8 ball and us open tenball return????

To me it seems clear the Invitationals are replacing the old events.
Minus the word OPEN of coarse.

CSI owns ALL the "US OPEN" names (8,10, 14.1 & 1pkt). The only game they don't own the rights to is 9ball. I think by including that in the press release its more a reminder that they hold the rights to those events.

It does pose a conundrum for MG.

The "US Open" is a strong brand name in golf, tennis and pool.
A total amateur who doesn't play would probably be impressed if someone said
"I won the US Open"... it just sounds prestigious.

But with this new policy, the name is misleading and shouldn't really be used anymore.
It's too bad. "I won the CSI invitational" just doesn't have the same cachet.

An invitational is NOT an open. If they call the invitationals opens, then it is disengenuous at the least.

They can have open qualifiers and limit participation in the qualifiers or bar specific players, but an open is an open, not an invitational.

Clarification

I'm not sure why there is any confusion at all. The US Open 10-Ball and US Open 8-Ball Championships will not be held this year. Instead of those "open" events, we will hold the first ever CSI Invitational 10-Ball and the CSI Invitational 8-Ball Championships. We have never placed the name "open" in the title of these events.

The article discussing the invitational was the second time I saw a present tense mentioning of csi producing the US open eight ball and tenball events and I was just wondering if that meant they may be back for next year in addition to the invitationals

The fact is even with out the word "open " they were just that , I guess it's just another way of excluding certain players and manipulating the field

Before, anybody who wanted to pony up 550 could play. There were often regional qualifiers etc. Now it is a limited field invitational that is a completely different tournament. It is not a replacement of the open. It's a different tourney that is invitational only.

Grow the game...

by shrinkng the field. Genius MG.

So any up and coming player, who has yet to even have the chance to annoy him, has no opporrunity to play. Yeah do this for about 3 years and there wont be anybody left to play.
 
Wow, different perspective I guess. I was thinking this is almost the start of a tour.

You now have:

1) Derby Big Foot Invitational

2) CSI 8 Ball Invitational

3) CSI 10 Ball Invitational

4) Helfert Invitational

Then if some how you could get Alan Hopkins to have a Hopkins Invitational at the Expo that would be #5

And just wishful thinking but how about two Zuglan Invitationals one at each Turning Stone Event. That would be #6 And #7

You'd have the start of a tour.

Mike is all about open fields where you pay your entry and take your shot. His tour is a sucess with or without pros.

Well its clear if only 16 players are invited, many non-American, it will hurt pro pool. How anybody thinks otherwise I just dont understand.
 
The first one hasn't even happened yet. I think they will expand them to 32 players
after a short period of time.
Then when they do you can maybe have the second 16 spots as qualifiers and
hold them all in the U.S.
Of coarse this is just what I believe.
 
Sorry, but I don't see how it will hurt pool. These are two brand new events with an elite field of top players. I don't view them as replacing the US Opens. Mark stated a while ago he was going to be rethinking those big events and he easily could have just done nothing this year. Instead he's doing something. Maybe he will bring back the Opens when the time is right and we will then have two additional events that we didn't have before.

I plan on being there.

My Flaw

The thing for me about an INVITATIONAL is if there is none of the players I'm particularly interested in Its hard for me to be geared up for it.
An OPEN is different. Even if there are players you're not too keen on there will be other players that you can root for against them. Even if these players aren't top tier or are shortstops. They might be from your area or someone you might know personally.

This is what makes the Derby so great. Nothing personal. I like my sports where I can root for someone.

For example I live on the west coast. If all the players invited were from the east coast then it goes down on my priority.list of events I want to spend my money on to attend. And I got nothing but love for Tony Robles as a great human being.

When Pat Fleming came up with the coming Accu-Stats Invitational. I was very disappointed. Although I have given Pat $ for 2 events. The One Pocket and the 14.1 " make it happen" events. I cant get enthused about a lineup of Thorsten, Appleton, SVB, and a mystery guest. Just not my cup of tea.

I wish Mark Griffin a big success with his INVITATIONALS. For many it probably will be exciting and appealing. I also applaud him for keeping his one pocket event a true OPEN.

How can they possibly "own" the name US open? You must have osme funny laws over there..
