CSI US Opens, Tunica and the Ultimate 10Ball...

I understand the things you wrote about professional pool players. And I appreciate the distinction you made between foreign players, as that has been my experience as well. I choose to surround myself with like minded, honest, clean and principled people. I took a chance one time on an American player (not the only time, btw), while putting him up in my house. He repaid my generosity by literally beating the shit out of his girlfriend in front of me, and then proceeded to threaten my life. The blood stains are still in the marble hallway. I won't name him, but he's a prominent player, even on this years Mosconi cup team. .

Earl, Hatch, or Morris? I can't really imagine Archer or SVB doing that. However, I have no idea. Whoever it was, that's awful.

How is this man still walking the Earth much less playing on the Mosconi Team?

Edit:

I forget this is just a forum and I normally just read for pleasure and typically don't comment, but abuse really strikes a nerve with me. If this really happened the man responsible should have paid dearly.

Nice post, Lou, but don't forget that these pros not only failed to support the promoters that always supported them but they failed to get behind the best new tournament on American soil this year. Badi Nazhat went deep into his own pocket to make the high-purse-money Ultimate 10-ball event happen, and the pros failed to get sufficiently behind it. The result is that the event is no longer on the pool calendar and an enthusiastic new promoter has been dissuaded from further investment in pro pool.

The history buffs among us will know that when the Romans defeated Carthage in the last of the Punic Wars, they salted the city of Carthage to ensure that nothing would grow even after they left. Bonus Ball may prove to be the salt dropped on the major American pro pool scene.

I'd be very pleased to see Bonus Ball come back from the dead, and at very least, I hope that those owed moneys are paid. Still, it's hard to imagine a happy ending.

It's a real shame about Ultimate 10-ball. I've been watching videos of the ladies playing this week, and will try to watch the men next week.

I remember the ladies' division was filled up early leading up to the event. Did the men's ever fill up? How many slots were left emtpy? It's a shame that both the women and men have lost out on a cool tournament.

I didn't look it up but I think they got a field of about 85 or 90 on the men's side rather than the 128 they planned for and wanted.

I don't think Badi is done... He hated the venue and some other aspects of the show he was involved with but I would not pull the color "gone" out of your crayola set yet.....

Plenty of options going forward and several promoters have some time on their hands to work with him.....

If you know so much then why did you ask the original questions in the op?

Women's 64/64

Men's 83/128.

I really do hope somehow they can make it work again for 2014. I really liked the coverage, viewing was free daily. Seems like the good majority of the men's matches was uploaded onto youtube too.

Has anyone ever considered the thought, if the crowd at any pro event is small, it is not a poor reflection on the pros or an indication that they can't draw, but instead it is a direct result of lousy promotion.

A promoter who cant persevere through times when things arent smooth selling does not have the passion needed to succeed. Someone once said "an intelligent man without passion is just as void" and they were right.

Go ahead, give up, get out, if thats what you want but please stop with the blaming. Do your little 16 man thing if thats what will make you happy but I'm tired of hearing all the crying from you. "Waaaa, the pros dont respect me or the job I do Waaaa, thats why Im leaving Waaaaaa! Enough.just go then. Someone else will come along.Maybe someone with the passion it takes to succeed instead of quit. Maybe someone who can figure out how to draw a croud at professional events. Maybe someone who can put this sport on the map.

When it comes to the Ultimate 10-ball, the fact that there were 83 players rather than the 128 logically anticipated for what I believe was a $75,000 added event, promotion was nothing to do with it. Everybody knew about the event, and many pros who opted not to support it were, metaphorically, men dying of thirst who chose to walk right past an oasis in the desert that is pro pool in America. That oasis won't be there next time they walk through the desert they always walk through in June, so their chance of survival is diminished.

The failure of the $75,000 Ultimate 10-ball was due to poor pro participation and nothing else. Turning Stone, which I believe is $25,000 added (someone correct me if I'm wrong) easily fills the field of 128.

Someone else will come along? Maybe, but the case history says they won't. To my knowledge, the list of promoters that developed a new event in America with a substantial added has just Badi Nazhat (Ultimate 10-ball) and Mark Griffin (US Open 8-ball). Each promoter had such a bad experience that these events won't be back next year. Their experiences don't increase the likelihood that anyone will roll the financial dice on any major new events in America.

I'll play along, since you obviously are baiting the forum, to stir the pot....

Ultimate 10-ball. Biggest prize for professional pool in this country. Men's field drew just 83 out of 128....

Women's field filled their 64, early. Hmmmmm. Interesting, the ladies were certainly interested in supporting this tournament.

Yet you claim this is on the promoters? This event was on the calendar WAY before BB changed their dates. Exactly what is the promoter supposed to do about that?

I dont blame Mark one bit, if things are even remotely bad as has been reported. He is rather successful with pool tournaments, you know. The ones without the pro's in them. (Actually, his pro tournaments are pretty successful, too, but apparently not worth the headache.)

I understand there are those who have a disdain for professional pool players, but let's not paint all of them with a broad brush. This thread seems to be gearing towards a pro pool player bashing thread, and that seems a little prejudicial. Not all players are bad.

That's all I'm going to say. :)

My comment about the promoters being at fault had nothing to do with the attendance from the pros and everything to do with the attendance from the crowd.

Time will tell if the 16 man field is the answer for pro pool. I am predicting its not. I think its just an easy way to secure a payday with less hassle which imo is what Mark truly desires.

Forgive me if I don't share everyone elses admiration for the man.

Just my opinion but there are maybe 15 guys with a chance to win the ultimate 10 ball and 113 donators. Some chose not to donate 500 $ plus expenses. People everyday leave jobs where they were needed and take chances on other expeditions does that mean they had no respect for there previous employer. There are a lot of players that took a chance on BB because they couldn't survive against the top rotation players in the world. Out of the whole BB player list how many have or could win a big rotation tournament. Let the roast begin.

Well said. Most of the pros are just going with the flow and making do as best they can. There are, however, those who are intentionally obstructive and vigilant, and some of them are skilled at getting some of the other pros to follow along with naivete and without a voice. Sadly, we live in a world where, fairly or unfairly, people are judged by the company they keep and those of us who are very close to the pool scene have a keen sense of where the loyalties of most of the individual players lie.

Still, nobody is speculating here. Mark Griffin has come out and made it crystal clear that the deplorable behavior of the players of Bonus Ball and the ABP are the reason that he has dropped the US Open 10-ball and US Open 8-ball events from the pro pool calendar.

As you note, however, countless pro players are blameless here and, as you suggest, we should be mindful of it.

You sir are way off!!!

The field at Nationals has eliminated 90% of all teams when it gets to finals and semi-finals! But, still draw 100 people tops in the arena! So, how do you explain that? Promoter stupid as you eluded? No, the players choice to vacation and spend time gambling versus watching the pro players. There is so much COMPETITION in vegas for vacationers time that the players have to chose from.

The players will not sign autographs for the 100 that do attend or make themselves available to the event members. The pro's do not see it as work and show ONLY for their match and refuse to spend any time manning a booth doing trick shots and training sessions to SELL tickets and get more than 100 viewers. They would rather hit up the girly bars and chug a few beers at the tables then work! That is my opinion of the situation.

The kids were at the US OPEN and the pro players could not find it in their heart to carve out time to teach and work with the kids!!! That was the biggest slap in the promoters face and had to hurt the MOST! Mark listed several players that stuck around and made the effort for the kids and mentioned those pro -players by name and acknowledged some BIG pro names were less then kind to the kids regarding their time and knowledge.
