Cue balance: 31" butt. What problems might I encounter?

I'm having a 31" butt made for me by Dave Jacoby. I've also ordered an OB Classic in 30" length. I currently use cues of 58" length. All of the mentioned butts and shafts I will be using have the same 5/16x14 piloted SS joint. If I mix and match these shaft combos, I could have basically three different configurations (aside from the basic 58" cue length).

1.) 29" butt w/30" shaft for a 59" cue length
2.) 31" butt w/29" shaft for a 60" cue length
3.) 31" butt w/30" shaft for a 61" cue length

I am planning on trying all of these various shaft/butt combos (with Jacoby, Predator 314-2, and OB Classic shafts) when I have everything here at the house together. I am 6'1'' tall with really long arms and have shot with a borrowed 60" cue and liked it a lot. My original plan was to have the 31" butt made and use the 29" shafts with it. Now I am planning on experimenting with all the different setups just to see what comes out of the mix.

What problems do you foresee that I might experience with this? I fully understand the concept of cue balance points and personally prefer a cue that is weighted a slight bit rearward. I'm thinking that this may go well for me in getting a longer cue with the weight a slight bit rearward.

What do y'all think???

Here's a news flash.........nobody on AZB has an opinion about something cue related??? :grin-square:

Guess I'll try the Ask a Cuemaker forum.

I play with 60 inch cues but have a good balance with 30 inch butts and 30 inch shafts.

I like a more forward balanced cue, so your configuration may give you the rearward balance you desire. Good Luck.

I think that it would be tough to keep a stiff hit with a longer shaft. I also am having a 31" butt made after looking at some others. I think it would help on a barbox. Here in TN and KY the rage seems to be seven footers...

With the right taper you can make the hit very stiff. Using woods other than maple is also an option like purpleheart, but you can put a stiff taper on over-length shafts.

I play with 60" cues, split at 30"30".... 30" inch butt and 29" shaft will push the balance point down an inch or 2....

My opinion, worth as much as everyone else's :) is that all of your configurations will be just fine from a balance and stiffness standpoint. Find the best length for you as the primary thing. This will be determined by if you run out of cue length on any type of shot. (I'm 6-3 and understand the need for a longer cue). You will get used to the new balance and or stiffness associated with that length just fine.

I don't think you will have any problems. I love my 61" cue!!. I might make a suggestion though. Spend the first day playing with all the combinations. Pick the one you like best. Then lock all the others away in a time locked safe for at least two months. That way you are not trying all the combinations and just getting focused on using one.
