Cue Display Stands

Getting ready for my first show and I was looking for a portable display rack.
From what I can see it's slim pickings! Saw the display racks from the
WCCS show and used that as a starting point. I'm going to stain it black and put felt at the top. Any other suggestions?

Looks real good!

Be careful that the cue isn't tight or snug at the top. No matter what you do, people will want to pick them up, and if it's tight, they will turn over your whole rack before you can stop them. You might want to put 2 bolts in the legs too. One for a pivot so you can close it down without taking it completely apart, and the other to make sure if someone leans on it the legs don't spread and drop all your cues on the floor!

I've actually seen both of these very things happen!

Looks great!

Great looking stands man! how many you making???

if it were me id want to build them with a glass cover, and a latch so people dont just pick up your cues without permissin ive heard alot of horror stories of people at shows dinging cues, droping them, knocking them over and so forth.

really nice looking tho.

Those rings look neat on that cue aswell.

Royce, Thanks much for the tips! I think I have enough clearance up top. I'm thinking of putting an adhesive backed felt in the grove, in which case I may need to open it up a little. I have a pivot point set up so it will fold in half and have spring loaded centers on order. The will act as a back up for the wood blocks that don't allow the legs to open any farther and will also lock it in the travel position.

Trent, I'm making up 9 that are spoken for and if I get some interest in them I will make up some more. I'll post pics of the finished product by the end of the week. I'm real happy with how it's coming out!

Here are the display racks that I have. They have a bar across so the cues cannot be removed without being unlocked. Also have gooseneck lights over the top.

Anymore today, the locking-bar should be considered mandatory.
Do I really need to say why?

I started going to tourneys as a vendor in `89/`90.
The Glass City Open was where I first met our beloved Mr. Dieckman.
Anyway, one problem that I had with the buying public is the 'touchy-feely' factor.
Once they see the cues, they want to start touching them. That really bugs me.
They may not even be interested in purchasing but they want to touch them.
The first time I asked a 'toucher' why he was running his hands all over the cue he replied:
"I want to check the quality of your work". That response only worked once.
I've found that they get very combative when you ask them not to touch.
"What's the problem dude? You afraid I might find one of your flaws?"
No you moron, I don't want to spend hrs. up in my room wiping your greasy hand-prints
off of my cues & re-buffing them so they'll be presentable for tomorrow.
I'd rather be down in the 'pit' sweatin' the action. Instead, I've got to polish cues.

The moral of the story is to also have a clear cover over them. Glass, acrylic, whatever.
This has several benefits. The touchers can look all they want & move on; no problem.
The potential buyer will take the time to ask if they can look at the cue they're interested in.
You've just eliminated the 'tire-kickers'. The potential buyers will ask.
Now you're into a one-on-one with the serious buyer. That's what you want.
The clear cover also provides an extra level of protection when the soft-drinks, etc. go flying.

Good Luck with your project.

Nice craftsmanship there Dunkel. I think a safety bar would be mandatory as well.

No you moron, I don't want to spend hrs. up in my room wiping your greasy hand-printsoff of my cues.

I thought you were going to add: Also, you don't want to be wiping my hand print off your head after I give you one upside your noggin.

Seriously, I have seen people break other items that were on display. Antiques and such. And then they walk away like nothing happened. Just another reason to lose a bit of faith in humanity sometimes.

I guess its just human nature to want to touch things tho.

Steve,
Those look real nice my friend. If I don't get around making some for myself, I'm gonna call you. Just curious, what would you be selling those for? If you need any help for the NE show, let me know - glad to be of help.

I let them touch my cues. But the thing that drives me crazy is seeing someone using their finger nail to check the hardness of the finish. I kid you not, someone took my $12,000 Ivory Scepter and tried to press their finger nail into the the finish above one of the stones. At the next show I locked the Scepter in a glass case with my Hall of Fame cues. People seem to have more respect for cues at the Super Billiards Expo than the browsers at tournaments so I leave it out there.

Ryan, Those are really nice display cases! I've been to to plenty of shows, but have never sold at a show, so all of your input is highly appreciated! I see a lot of the higher end cue makers with their cues exposed and would feel a little strange locking mine up.

I may go medium security and have a piece that pulls down around the handle. Could also engrave "PLEASE ask for assistance" on the pull down bar or I could also custom engrave one that says
"Keep your Grimy oily hands off my cues and yes we accept Mastercard and Visa :)"

With my display, I can stand there and have the bar down, inviting people to take a closer look. Sometimes, I am not so attentive so I keep the bar up and locked.

I think there needs to be a balance between security and accessibility. If you lock them up, people walk on by without looking. If you leave them too open, people walk on by and take the cue with them...

I would suggest " please try to yank the cue out past the obvious lock bar" As that is what usally happens if you don't grab them before they get their hands on the cue. Try a little reverse psychology on em.

Put up a sign saying if you ding it or harm it you bought it.
When i look at high priced merchandise, i keep my hand at my sides and bend towards what i'm looking at. never touching except if i am seriously contemplating buying.

Last year me and a few friends went into a jewelry store at a port of call while on a cruise. I noticed a watch and was just curious as to pricing.
When the sales lady took it out of the case she quoted e $80.000.then asked for my wrist to try it on.Knowing immediately that was out of my ball park, I thanked her and never even touched it.
This way your not responsible if an accident occurs and the seller is not harmed.
A good rule for looky loos.

Finished the first on up. Still some things to work out, but pretty happy with how it looks. Still working on a locking system, felt liner for the top, and have label holders for the bottom on order.
