Is there a machine available to just engrave cues? What are people using. I hate tying up the CNC just to engrave. I want to be able to type the name and the machine cuts it.
 
Well, if you have some extra bucks to spare, have a look at the Gravograph
machines which is made to do engraving.
Just one solution which is not cheap in my world.

Depends on what CadCam you are using. You should be able to
do just what you describe by getting a font from Windows and
letting the cad gen an engrave program.

Am I missing something?

Well, I think the point is that he would like to free the CNC he has
for otherwork and get something else to perform the engraving part :-)

We have a Gravograph IS400 at work.Works OK and could be expanded
with a small 4th axis for some extra fun engraving.
Cost is in my end A LOT however.

If I remeber right Southwest used a machine for engraving wine glasses and bottles. They had to modify it a little to accept a cue but it worked. They dont use it anymore so they can keep up with orders for the basic cues they build. I have been waiting 10 years for a fancy one she told me no more Fancy engraved ones for awhile, I guess nowone has a steady hand for it.

A lazer is the way to go but it aint cheap.
I wanted to get one for engraving pens but I sat down and figured up how long it would take to recover the investment.
I wont live long enough ...:eek:
 
Thats were im lucky almost my Girlfriend does all different types of glas work and she keeps bugging me to get her a lazer glas engraver. Your right they are nice at $10,000 a wack, 1 more jackpot from the casino at I wont have to use my money to pay for it.

I'm still researching them to see what one last longer or less repairs and capable of handling cues with ease.

Pfft, I did it the more affordable way.
On the bumper.
To do it on pins, will be another set up.

Remove the spindle in your ALign-Rite.
Mount a laser or soft plasma there.
And whale at your own pins or buttcap or bumpers.
Use Corel Draw or Illustrator for text.
Do the cordinates there.
Shait, with your machine you can plasma etch the insides of your ivory points .

Optical illusion.
Hello, it;s round and the slots go down straight.
You've never seen a billet?

Of course I've seen billets.... I make them !!!

It just looked a little odd "triangular" that's all

I can see why you would want that milled.. that's one hell of a gap in between each slot...

You know there is a much more simple solution to your problem....

whatever you are using as the inlayed piece... make that the foundation and inlay the opposit color

just an idea !

What problem?
The outside is round.
The inside becomes octagonal.
The pockets go down straight.
Pls draw one at 1.300 round .175 deep slots.
Lemme see if they appear different.
That's just the slotted billet with no "inlays" yet.

I see the optical illusion... the slot edges just looks triangular...

What type of wood or material is this suppose to made out of ???

so it's an 8-slot .175 deep how wide are the slots ???

Of course they look triangular.
The OD is larger than the octagon inside.
It dun't matter what it's made of.

Well, he said he wanted to just type in the name and have the machine
do the work - he also said something about typing in the CNC
which sounds to me like he is entering an NC Program just to
engrave a name - which would be tedious indeed.

Every CNC package I have worked with has the ability to gen an
engrave program in some manner similar to what I described -
and if you take more than 30 seconds to gen the program
you must be taking a nap:)

If there is some way to engrave by just typing in a name, without
using a CNC package, I would be very interested to learn about it.
