cue finishing

You mean this one?

The next time we meet feel free to talk shit to me like you do to others here and see what happens. You don't know me so let me give you some advice, try and be polite like I did or you may not like the result. I don't put up with other people's bullshit so I'm sure as hell not going to take shit from you. The difference is I don't attack people unprovoked like you. The reason didn't say anything to you is because I was trying to avoid confrontation. Everything I've said about you is reaction from things you've said and I'm entitled to my opinion. Additionally, I'm not the only one who thinks your an asshole. Every time I post something about you I get ten emails from other members agreeing with me. I have about 8-9 positive reps just from post about you. Why don't you just take a step back and stop treating people like shit?

My problem with you is your piss poor attitude and that you feel it's ok to call other people names for no reason. I have news for you, your not God's gift to cue making. In fact everything you make in ****ing boring. I'm sure I could make the same thing with a Porper lathe in my basement.

And what was the deal with you attacking Al Bautista? Do you feel threatened that he can make something similar to you but for 1/3 the money?

I'm normally against posting private messages in public but this one is deserving. Not only did you threaten me, but you actually have attempted insult on several levels. How pathetic are you to inject yourself into somebody else's issues as if you are Judge Judy? If I didn't know better, i'd say it looks like you have a mega man crush on me. It's ok, just don't act on it. But for real this obsession is getting creepy. Are you retarded? Rep points? Really? Are you not a grown man? You really feel so insecure about yourself that you need support from your I-friends to balls up enough to speak out? Even then it was in secret. I mean really, if you are going to threaten me and want me to take you seriously then you really gotta change a few things about yourself, Nancy. If you don't like my attitude & the way I talk straight, then put me on your ignore list. Pretty simple stuff. Since you are so eager to offer advice to me, let me offer some to you. Grow up, get a life, get some self esteem so you don't need community support, and quit taking internet forums so seriously. For real, you're wasting your life away if you actually take any of this to heart. It's pool cues, wooden toys for grown ups. You need some serious perspective.

This so typical of you. I think you forgot to post the pm you sent me that this was in response to. I wish I still had it in my inbox so I could be as immature as you and post it in the open forum. I think the people here would have a different opinion of you if they read what you wrote.

And as far as taking the forum seriously, I really don't. What I do take seriously is the way you seem to have a complete disregard for other people except for the people here that you are friends with. You have shown on more than a few occasions that you think it's ok to call others names such as "hack" and not think anyone is going to call you out on it. I know you have stated that you dont care how people perceive you but it doesn't mean that you can say whatever you want about people. As I mentioned in our conversation via pm I'm not the only one who thinks this is not ok. The difference is I am willing to say something about it. That is what I meant when I suggested that you keep talking trash the next time we meet. I am more than willing to have this discussion face to face the next time we meet rather than trying to be polite and shaking your hand and walking away.

With my dealings with both Dupont and PPG, I learned that there is less adhesion to the wood as there is adhesion to the finish itself. There are very few finished that actually "adhere" to metal to begin with. That is why auto guys use a primer as opposed to shooting bare metal. Cues cannot be prepped the same way.

Also, there are more than one substrate in cues. Wood, phenolic, plastics, metal, MOP, ivory, etc. Each has unique characteristics that react differently to each type of finish.

Polishing is also needs to be taken into account. The more aggressive the adhesion, the less luster you may get. You can use two different finishes, which is what I do, but you have to make sure each is compatible with the other. Will they have a chemical reaction with the oils in the wood, your sealers, plastics, etc?

Monstermash, I'm sure you are good at what you do but cue making is a like domesticating an angry baboon. Finding the right product for your specific application isn't as easy as going to the local auto body supply company and asking for a clear coat.

Ummm, you PM'd me first. I still got them. Regardless, you got me pegged all wrong. I disregard everybody equally, friends or foes. Ask them if you don't believe it. Why would you think they don't know as much about me as you do? And I don't care if you "say something about it" any more than I care if you don't. Have I ever asked you to change who you are? No. I conclude that you're blindly ignorant & I press on without wasting my time. Like I said in my PM, if you have a problem, or anybody has a problem, put me on your ignore list. It's you carrying the hate, not me. Like I said, blindly ignorant. That means you refuse to accept things as what they actually are and instead are adamant about making it something it isn't. It's fantasy. The difference between you & those "others" is that you take the fantasy much farther to the point of acting out on it like it's real, where they separate real life from internet forum and live normally. And me, well I don't do fantasy. I'd rather keep it real & all laid out in the open. I got kids, no time for petty pretend drama. Though I do enjoy a good ole' virtual roll in the mud sometimes :)

But if you insist on continuing this discussion face to face, then first beer is on me. I probably won't like you any more or any less, but then again i'm not the one confusing reality with fantasy. And I don't dislike you. I told you that in PM, too. Again, you refuse to see the reality.

Here is an example of a chemical reaction on, in this case, a plastic Meucci collar. It looks to have been refinished once before. There is clouding that looks grey on top of the black.

I've got to hand it to RAT for this quote
"Cue making is a like domesticating an angry baboon"
I once saw a small group of Baboons stop a squad of Marines
out for a morning jog. Bad Ass animals.
I have a cousin who sprayed aircraft for a living. I explained
what I wanted in a pool cue finish, and he said
"Forget about it!"
I've been to quite a few custom car shows and of course
I really look at the finish closely. None come even close
to what the top end cuemakers are doing with clear.
They may not be any good at pearls, candies or pin stripping, but the
boys can lay down a topcoat. No orange peal or swirl marks.

I agree. Totally different animal & requires a completely different skill level & knowledge base. The Marines being stopped by baboons was kinda funny, too. We always said Marines were aggressive pack animals like baboons. Fight one you gotta fight them all.

So who died and made you the mediator.
Same to Bill the Cat. I've had enough of this
forum, go ahead and screw up your finishes until you
learn to do them your self. I'm history.

Sorry if I offended you Steve, but.....

...I think you may have missed my (our) point. We DO want to learn from info posted in this forum. What we DON'T want to have to do is wade through the personal pissing contests when someone's ego gets bruised.

It has nothing to do with "ego" bruising. It has everything to do with cue makers trying to discuss a subject & being interrupted by non-builders who think they know better.

I don't understand why people get so upset.... why take it personally? This is a public forum, and if some fool takes advice from someone that doesn't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground, it's not on you! Just let it go, like I've said before, those that matter will know who's opinions and advice to follow.
It is rather amusing to see grown men throw hissy fits though, so maybe no one should take my advice.
Come to think of it, not too many ever do..... hmm.... :grin-square:

Tap, tap, tap!

When I worked as a sheetmetal structures mechanic in an avionics shop, we typically sanded the shine off of the metals and then chemically etched them before we primed them. I also worked at the Nissan plant in Smyrna Tennessee. Our cars were dipped in an etching bath, then coated with what they called an 'environmental' coating, and then finally got a coating of primer. Just some info y'all may be able to use.
