Cue Question

I am a SL5. I am curious about the different cues, I am sure it come down to preferance,

I am currently shooting with an Schon sl 13, A friend of mine has a real nice Jerry Olivier cue. I know schon is a production and JO is a custom,

In all acutuality would one play that much better than the other?

Thanks in advance

Mike

No. You wouldn't play any better with it.

If anything, you'd play slightly worse (how much depends on individual) until you got used to the different taper, hit, weight, balance and overall feel. But after that, you'd only return back to your highest skill level achieved with the Schon.

Is the grass greener on the other side? From playability standpoint, not really.

Your Schon is perfectly fine.

Your Schon is perfectly fine.

what he said, and paying any more than around 800.00 for any cue
is just buying a bigger penis to show off.

Go to walmart, get a Mike Massey cue for $20, change the tip and go shoot the lights out on some one then show off your weapon :)

Without fail, as soon as someone suggests that someone else with a high end production cue is perfectly fine and will not gain any advantage with a custom cue - someone will come around and equate all that to buying a ramin-wood K-mart cue.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I didnt think, I would play any better, Its not the weapon its the Indian.

Is the JO cue better than a Schon, I could sell my Schon and buy the JO cue, but I dont know if I would be gaining anything,

Stick with the Schon. JO makes some great cues, but so does Schon.
If you're playing well with it, no reason to change. At the most, you may want to try some different shafts and tips before you go investing in a new cue.

You'd gain better resale value if kept in reasonably good condition. Something more unique. Customs usually have better inlay work, fancier pieces of exotic hardwood. More attention to aesthetic details. Schon has CNC cut points, so they're all rounded at the top. Schon uses good materials and construction. It's one of the better production cues. They'll both be durable and last a lifetime. They should both stay straight too.

But at the end of the day, it's just a Schon from a model line that's been around a long time and there are many of them out there. A JO will be more special.

The difference is only from an ownership and collectors standpoint. That's it.

if you want to buy a new cue buy it..

if you expect your game to get better because of it... your fooling yourself

the cue doesn't play.. you play

:D

hey softshot...he didnt play any better with it he just really liked the cue and so did everybody else...as i recall he played great with the bar cues too...remember thats how he came to meet eddie felson because he played so great...and he played grady seasons the whole time with a bar cue and played just fine....it doesnt really matter what kind of cue you have if you have the talent your going to shoot great...bonnie plowwman won all of her canadian championships with what she calls a "30 dollor piece of shit cuetec" and one of the best hustles i know of is telling some bar drunk you will play with the crookedest cue on the wall...as long as the tip hits where you aim the rest doesnt matter

Mike,

FWIW, I own a $1000 cue and I own a $27 cue (and many in between those two). I shoot just as good with the cheapo as I do the wallet-buster. That said, I DO feel like I have a magnificent piece of poolplaying equipment in my hands when I'm using the more expensive cue. It gives me a bit more confidence. My theory was, when I first got serious about the game, was to invest in good equipment so I at least couldn't blame THAT for my failures.

If I were you, if you have confidence in the Schon and you don't care about collecting or resale value, then there is just no reason to change cues. Schon does indeed make a fine cue.

What about the psychological edge?? I find that when I walk into a pool room with a high end (what I tihnk anyways :D ) cue and people take notice I feel like I cant afford to play like chit and focus more and play slower so I dont mess up, on the other hand If Im playing with a house cue or a sneaky I tend to ease up. I dont know maybe Im nuts lol

Mike it all comes down to your personal ability, Tip's, Cues, Glues, and anything else people think they need to play better is nothing but a Major Circle Jerk.

Focus on the important things in pool if you want to improve, Stance, Stroke, and Hand / Eye coordination and practice, practice, Practice, nothing will serve you better than that.

Good Luck

There is no point in trading a cue you are comfortable with just to have a custom if you want a custom you need to talk to a cuemaker and have one made to your exact specs.

No. It's the indian, not the arrow.

As long as a cue doesn't actively bother you (like it feels too heavy, or you get a weird vibration when you hit, or you think it looks ugly) then there's no reason to switch to something else.

99.5% of your quality of play comes from you. The other .05% is more likely to be the pool hall's equipment rather than your own.

Man, this is why this is the best billiard forum on the net.
I figured I would get the answers that I have gotten. Im not really much into collecting cues, I bought the schon because I was shooting with a pre red dot meucci and I was not completely satisfied ( Mental ) I could have bought the JO cue before I bought the schon but the price wasnt right for me. I am happy with my Schon, so thanks to all the respones I am going to Practice Practce Practice and be happy.

Thanks
again

Have you though about making the cue really yours? Ok here is what I mean. I bought a $265.00 schon used of course here from a AZer. Plane as could be. First thing I did was have my cue guy for me on a kamui brown med tip my tip. Then a week or two later I had him put me a leather wrap on. I keep toying with having a ivory joint put on. So I go to my cue guy he sends it off to one of the cue legends. Now I have an arrow that any indian would be proud of. Point take what you have an make it yours. Hope I have giving you some help. Skip :):)

No you probably won't shoot better with a custom, but it will probably make you excited to play just by changing things up a lil bit.

If I were to make a suggestion I would tell you to have one made for you. Make your first custom "yours".
