Merry Widow or Plain Jane is a cue with no inlays or decorations anywhere.
BEM is birds eye maple
Hoppe is a style of cue based on the old Willie Hoppe cues made by Brunswick years ago-Goggle that one.

Merrywidow means on piece of wood from butt to joint, even under wrap. Goes back to 1920's Brunswick cues.

Hoppe cues are in the style of Brunswicks with a 1/4 inch wide ivory ring above a blavk buttcap. Lately these are made bumperless with a chrome exposed weight bolt...pretty sexy players.
PH is Purple Heart.

Cause I have to free up some cash because I have another Monster Player that Hits a Ton coming in from another Cue Maker. Soon to be sold after 2 weeks of play.
Something like that. Sometimes one has to read between the lines.
On occasion you might see a cue that refers to it as being Ebonized. That is another wood, usually PH that has been stained or dyed Black to resemble ebony. Because of the weight and density of PH, it can be a decent wood to use.
There was one maker here that quite often did that and it actually looked really great. Nothing wrong with it, as long as you know that you are not actually getting real ebony.

My feeling is that the terminology isn't always perfectly defined, but you have to use some reasoning on whether the seller is in fact saying what he thinks the cue is or what the main part of cue enthusiasts would say...
For example, I'd say, au contraire to the definitions above, that a merry widow cue, synonymous to a plain jane cue, is a cue with a wrap or a handle of different wood from the forearm of the cue, but without points or inlays.
So I would not call a sneaky pete, which for me is a fullsplice cue without a wrap, a merry widow cue.
In any case, it's like art... in order to understand it you need to read these forums (and why not the blue book), and try to understand what people are in fact saying, by using a certain type of common sense... that of the pool enthusiasts.

A lot to keep up with...often confusing...makes face to face test hitting probably best..definitions vary...opinions vary...cues usually have their own unique personality within a range of expectation from a builder. Same but different. Like girlfriends.
I still think a glossary of buy/sell cue terms is a good idea, even if opinions vary.
