Cuemaker build off

Looking good so far. What kind of tip would we want to use as a standard tip for these cues?

This is a really good idea if it goes off. I don't have time to read the whole thread - are the testing members contributing any $$ to help cover the cost of the cue?

Honestly, that has not been discussed. I was going to pay for each cue, unless the cuemaker wanted to donate it. If it was donated, at the end, we would raffle it off on here...and send the money back to the cuemaker with whatever we got out of the cue.

If I bought the cues...I may want to keep one and sell the rest...not sure.

Looks like another cuemaker is on board.....2 reputable cuemakers on the forum here......this should be pretty fun!

OOOH Like "Biker Build-off" but with cues! Somebody call Discovery Channel!

I too would like to see this happen.

I like Eric's suggestions, and most of the path of the contest. However, I would say even the tip should be the cuemaker's choice. A weight restriction range is good, but not an exact weight. Great idea FTG, props to you!

I say the tip should be all the same...Like a Moori, Kamui, Sniper....something like that.or whatever we all choose....that way its more fair for the cue builders....

But I would want the majority to rule on this though....it doesnt matter to me any, just as long as each cuemaker gets a fair shake....

I'll contribute some Molavia Medium tips for this experiment and will possibly participate in this cue builder contest depending on the finalized requirements. If it's going to be a simple cue with birdeye forearm or exotic woods (No Points) then I'm in :)...just send me details if this get going. Of Course, I'm not a full time builder and does this as a hobby only. So maybe you guys should setup up requirements for who you think would qualify based on experience, full time vs part time, etc.

Regards,
Duc.

Me personally, I dont thin full time or part time cue builder guy has anything to do with this. To me..the timeframe would need to be reasonable for a simple cue....6-8weeks?

There will be no points or inplays in these cues....just a simple cue....

Here is what we have come up with so far.....this is subject to change, but all cuemakers involved will be aware beforehand so nobody is in the dark..

1. The cue will have a lightly figured BEM forearm and butt

2. Handle will be Maple or Purpleheart, wrapped or wrapless (up to cue builder) if you specifially build all your cues with PH then use PH.

3. Cue builder to decide to core or not to core

4. cue builders personal taper on shaft

5. Cue builder to use Molavia Medium tips provided by Duc Lam

6. Builder's to use black phenolic collars, buttcap

7. Cuemakers choice on ferrule, pin

8. Weight will be 19oz +/- 0.2oz

9. No ringwork, inlays, points, signatures or trademarks

10. have integrity & build the cue as if somebody had ordered it, the same way you'd build all of your cues.
I want this as simple as we can get it to cut down on cost and the cuemaker be able to deliver it in a reasonable timeframe...That way it will be the most fair.....

Any suggestions how to make this better....im all ears.....just dont call me Mr Ears!

You can't impose too many restrictions on the builders, otherwise you're not getting 'their' cue.

I say give them the wood & weight only, and then let them do their thing. Most cue makers have their own taper, joint choice, tip & ferrule selection, and won't change it for anyone because that's their reputation, their cue on the market. These guys have been doing this for years, perfecting their design. Let them face off against each other for it with their best choices. A maple fore arm and purple heart handle seem like a great choice.

I know I'd be interested in playing with all the cues.

PS Eric, while your wife is away, why not build a cue or two? I'll take one composed of nothing but your scraps! :p I hope she comes back OK. How long is her tour? Best of luck to her.

I agree...we want THIER cue...We dont want to restrict a cuemaker at all...but for us to get a good feel of what they are capable of ..we have to make this as simple as we can..they add their personal touches (taper, joints) to make it hit like THEY want their cue to hit...

I say they use their taper, joint choise (No Ivory) ferrule...But I think everyone using the same tip would equal it out more...but thats just me....it would be whatever the majority would want

She's gone for six months minimum. She left before Christmas, won't be back til July. Second Christmas in a row she has been over there. That's why I got out of the military, to be home for the kids no matter what. 3 more years & she'll be retired & we can take life easy.

If I get time, i'll throw together a cue to add in the mix for fun. Likely not, though. I got too much work to do & not nearly enough time to do it. I'll help in any way I can, though. It's a neat idea. I wish I had a panel of judges to give an unbiased critique of my work when I was a newbie. It sure could have saved me some headaches.

Im sorry qbilder, but who are you? and Do you build cues? Leave this for the more qualified cuemakers:thumbup:

This is as Bill and Ted say.....Most Excellent...for Eric's willingness to lend a hand in this....shows he cares about the pool community....I am sure the cuemakers that are involved will value your opinion.....This is getting better by the minute!

Schmelke is best.

I was thinking Action..:D

Nah, I think we will be suprised as to the quality of cues this will produce...and I have a few committments..and I can assure you guys..you will be very suprised....;)

So this is the initial specs on a cue....subject to change

1. The cue will have a lightly figured BEM forearm and butt

2. Handle will be Maple or Purpleheart, wrapped or wrapless (up to cue builder) if you specifially build all your cues with PH then use PH.

3. Cue builder to decide to core or not to core

Let me know of any changes you think there needs to be...or additions to the list for these particular cues for this build off

Just a banger. I have changed a few weight bolts. Does that qualify me?

Sounds good so far. Have a few questions though.
1) purpleheart handle? Not complaining just curious as to why, is it consistency of the wood over something like cocobola, bacote, etc.
2)no highly figured BEM. Again just curious as to why.
It seems like a great set of basic specs to get a honest feedback on each cue and the cue makers work. People should be able to get a "FEEL" of the different hits that each maker has given the same basic materials to work with. I would think you would want the same tips though just IMHO. Other than that great job and I can't wait. If I'm included.
If you like I have a local guy who fits the criteria. Would be willing to get one from him and put it in the mix, if that's ok with you and everyone else.

Im not sure......can you build a High Dollar particle board cue with cardboard tip and ferrule?

If you guys are willing to give us people living out of USA be a part of this, I am willing to participate. I'll pay the shipping cost both ways (in and out of USA).

BTW, we could ask John to donate a case like this (http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=129265). It will show how good the case is and how it will protect the cues while traveling around the globe.
