Cuemaker build off

Looking at the review sheet, I had some questions

Balance - How should this be measured and should this be something that Everyone is doing for every cue?

Weight- Is this for everyone for all cues?

Stifness - " Stiffest = 10" Shouldnt this be a personal preference?

Sound Quality - Isnt this the same as feedback?

Smoothness? The finish?

Power Vs Effort?

How the Ball Moves?

Deflection.. How will this be measured? Should we see if we can send them to iron willie?

cues...

I too have started reading the last post and quit on page 13.

Who are the cuemakers so far who are willing to have their cues tested ?

When will it take place ?

I ask this because I'ld love to help you with a cue made by my own specs...

Just let me know...

Greetz,

Tom Penrose

Give us some ideas on what you think we should test..

Eric is measuring the cues when he gets them...so he will fill in all data as far as shaft diameter, weight...so on....but what do you feel we should put down to rate the cues?

Thanks for the input..Shawn

The cuemakers involved are only known to me and Eric Crisp...cues should all be at Erics by end of may

Some of these I would use different wording but I think we can simplify it to

Comfort - wrap, grip, size, length, etc.
Feedback - Noise, harmonics, percussion
Solidity?? ex a straight piece of steel would be solid and stiff a tapered piece of G10 would be solid but not as stiff..
Stiffness

Finish - Feel of the stroke? Texture quality
Ball Control.. Pocket a ball, how many rails with follow.. Same, How many rails with back..

should we value these ratings differently.. eg feedback is worth 1.2 x the finish.. or whatever. Or the personal preference valued higher, ball control valued lower because it is a test of skill?

I also think we should get some other specs on the cues.. Complete breakdown..

Dia at Butt
Dia at Joint
Joint Collar Material/ Length
Cored/not/ How many pieces? Radial Lam? Flat Lam? Core Material.
Pin Size, Thread, Material
Shaft Side Joint collar.. Size, material, Length
Shaft Insert?/ Material
Shaft construction? Material/Laminate?
Shaft Diameter at 6" 10" 12" 14" etc..
Tenon Diameter/ Length/ thread?/Material
Ferrule Length/Material/Capped? Diameter?

Hey, who do you have testing in DFW??? Hopefully they'll set up a test time/date so all of us can get together and try these bad boys out....

Big Perm...someone in Sherman and another person in Texas is gonna host the cues...cant remember exactly where he is at....I think its GroundHogg.....send him a pm and ask him exactly where he is....maybe you guys can hook up...or i can send them to you also..

Just to clarify

These are the specs that the cues shoudl be built to.....if they ARE NOT to these specs....they cannot be evaluated with the cues that meet these specs...The cue will be sent along with the cues, and will be evaluated by itself.....but since we originally wanted to get some cue builders to make Similar cues with similar specs, it cannot be evaluated with the ones that meet the specs....but will be tested by itself....Here are the specs so everyone knows....and they have been posted for quite some time so this shouldnt be a suprise to anyone

1. The cue will have a lightly figured BEM forearm and butt

2. Handle will be Maple or Purpleheart, wrapped or wrapless (up to cue builder) if you specifially build all your cues with PH then use PH.

3. Cue builder to decide to core or not to core

4. cue builders personal taper on shaft

5. Cue builder to use Molavia Medium tips provided by Duc Lam

6. Builder's to use black phenolic collars, buttcap

7. Cuemakers choice on ferrule, pin

8. Weight will be 19oz +/- 0.2oz

9. No ringwork, inlays, points, signatures or trademarks

10. have integrity & build the cue as if somebody had ordered it, the same way you'd build all of your cues.

is it too late to get added? if not i would like to help out.

Hi alwayzcocacola.....its not to late to be involved. But since you dont have alot of ITrader, your join date is too new, and you dont have many post the cues cannot be shipped to you.....Unless you have someone in good standing here that can voutch for you on the forum.

Another idea might be to run this test at next year's Expo at Valley Forge, the ACA will be there as they are every year. How about having each of them build a cue (as they do for the best cue design) but have them also build a plain cue, given standard dimensions, weight, tip size and tip. Then have players check them out and hit with them on the tables they have for trying out cues. The players/cue testers would fill out a ratings sheet which they would turn in. A small fee could be applied say $5 - $10 per tester so that the winning cuemaker would get a small incentive. If 500 people tested the cues and it was a winner take all that's $2500 @ $5 per test.

The cues could be raffled off and given away after the contest.

Does anyone think this would gain the support of the ACA (American Cue Makers Association)? We could also include the ICA cuemakers?

Thanks for your comments.

Good idea dr9ball...if the cues are back to me by Sept I am going to take them to the World Classic in Galveston to let people hit with them (not 100% sure TWC is a go though)

I have been in contact with 2 cue builders, that have an ungodly wait list, they will build a cue for the next build off...these 2 cue builders are about as upper tier as you can get...

What I am wanting to do is go to each cue builder for the next build off...and do some video so we can post that of the cues being built...the next build off is in the works, but we have to get through this one first

I want to get these cues out that we are about to be testing to as many people was we can expose them to...so we can have some fun, get the cues in the hands of people that woudl otherwise not have a chance to hit with one of the cues....and it will be good for our sport, and for the builders themselves...

I hope this turns out good, but at least if it doesnt, we will know what to do better next time!

Are the cues going to make it to the Open?! It would seem like the perfect place for them.

Dont really know....If someone thats gonna be near the Open wants to take them they are more than welcome to...the more exposure the cues get the better it would be for the builders and AZ......

All the cues are making thier way to Eric right now...I believe he has 2, possibly 3 right now, and another cue builder said his cue was shipped monday and eric should be recieving it wed-thurs....Getting down to the wire now and this thing should be kicking off here shortly.......

oooohhhh weeee.

i'm soo, excited.

Have we any attorneys on the forum? Maybe there should be a waiver drawn up with a signature, date and time of everyone who takes this cue into possession (including the sub-testers) the cue can be 'checked out' or 'rented' for a pre-set amount of time with plenty of (minimum 30-day) advance notice to the patrons of the pool hall. With, of course from permission of the pool hall owner.

It can be advertised as a 'demo day' and be listed for $2-3 bucks per cue or a $6 bucks for the entire batch to rent for 15-30 minutes. With a little creativity and motivation, such an idea could be manifested into a reality and could spark the beginning of something incredibly trendy across the world. Golfers to this at golf courses sponsored by the big names such as Ping, Mizuno, Cobra, Titlist, etc.... but the demo days are free. What we are talking about here is something similar, but at the same time, much different. There is much less expendability with this product and much more risk because of the uniqueness and fascination this will create among a group of people who are not accustomed to seeing such a thing.

This rental fee will help pay for the cost of the cues & case and the cost of shipping from tester to tester. The waiver will protect and discourage unfortunate and unforseeable events (such as dings, drops, spilled liquids, possible theft, and who knows what else) from happening throughout the duration of this creative adventure started by Shawn. I think it's a beautiful thing to see and would like to see much more of this type of quantum physics from other AZ members who have unique and creative ideas to create 'something out of nothing'. I would simply hate to see something bad happen as cuedaddy pointed out, which is where I think he was coming from.

I have a feeling, these cues will not be treated with the utmost respect by everyone who tests them out, and should therefore submit some sort of guarantee, in writing, or collateral at the pool hall. A flyer can be made up to pre-register for the 'demo day', kind of like trying out golf clubs, but with more incentive added to treat the products with the utmost care. We will be featuring these products in a pool hall which is not the safest place for high profile items, IMO. If we are going to take this creativity this far, this is a the type of creative suggestion that can only aid to the process and IMHO, shouldn't be ignored.

I know some cues have arrived at Erics...awaiting word from him on how many is there......we had 2 builders drop out because they couldnt meet the deadline...we have 2 more stepping up to fill that void...This is taking a little longer than expected, but should be starting pretty quickly...I know I am going crazy cause I want to try the cues out!

Eric should either be sending me an email or giving me a call today or tomorrow and I will post where we are at...or if he sees this he can let us know..

Thanks guys!!!
