cuemaker = good pool player

I would guess this falls into the category of coaches and teachers/trainers of sports. Many coaches in sports are not a top player of their game but they have the knack of teaching or knowing the methods to be successful. I would think cuemakers could be all over the board in terms of talent but they have a good comprehension of the game.

I coach girls volleyball and I know some of the guys and gals I coach against would not stand a chance on the court agianst me, but I have to think they were at least an average player at one time and now just have the knack for teaching the skills of the game.

Two outstanding cuemakers who are also great players are Dick Neighbors and John (Jack) Madden.

Dick doesn't play much anymore but back in the day he was known to make a ball or two.

John Madden played professionally and could hang with the best of them.

Not only are these two Great players and cuemakers, but they are two of the nicest guys in the business!

Andy Gilbert plays a decent game.

Dave Ward of B&D Custom Cues in Springfield, MO. plays better than Andy.

Jerry Terbrock could just about give either of them the orange crush.

All make fine cues.

Who would you think would be able to build the better cue , as far as playability ??? Given the maker has the equipment and wood and skill . A person who can barely make 2 balls in a row , or a seasoned money player ??? How would a no playing terd know what a good cue hits like or plays ??? Do you get the pic ... Most people buy cues for the looks or the name , so they get what they deserve . Most players want something that shoots the balls in the hole , that's how they get paid !!!! Does that answer your question , you no playin' PAB !!!:cool:;)

Some cue makers are solid players, others are C players. I dont think there is a correlation between how good a cue maker is and how good his cues play.

One of the best Harp makers in the World, can not play or tune a harp. But man , can he make a high end instrument.
To make and develop a pool cue does not take the ability to be a top player.
It takes the ability to be a craftsman in a multiple of crafts.
To be able to identify the things that create the playability of the cue ,that yo want to make.
There are alot of people that can give feedback as to what the cue does, so the maker does not need to be a top player.
Being able to tell what one shaft does compared to another is a big advantage, but more importantly is having the ability to make the shaft with those properties you are looking for consistently.

Keith of Keith Kustom cues shoots the lights out usually. unorthadox form but hell of a player and AWSOME cues.

Thanks for all comment on this thread, i really appreciate it. especially SK custom cues. Your opinion is very good and give me a lot of knowledge. I'm sorry i can not give you a green rep for that, because i have to spread to others before you and i don't how??

don't get me wrong...

I know exactly, that it's very hard hard to play like a champion in pool. somebody need not only STROKE, but cue ball position, knowledge about rail, aiming method, jump ball ability, breaking ability and many others.

What i'm talking about that only good smooth delivery STROKE..
If somebody can STROKE good, i believe he already are a good player ( or at least have a foundation to be a good player).

But, do you all believe somebody that don't know how to stroke well can make a cue that deliver a good stroke?? well, i wonder how that man can test his work if he don't know how to stroke..except like Mr Sung kang said..he is lucky :grin-square:.

Minnesota Fats played good and makes a great cue.:D

Ernie Martinez was a great player
Jeff Fugal (A-E) plays very good
I've heard.....that Alex Brick is a terrific player and Dave Kikel as well
Bill Stroud was a monster player when he was here in Colorado

I don't know the relevance but one thing I have noticed is that the best cuemakers I know are all very good players. Showman can play. Searing is a great player. Stroud is a player. Dan Janes is reportedly a very good player. Scruggs, Bender, etc. If a cue is known for playability, I have related that with the builders being able to play. I'm not saying that there's any factual proof to it at all, just that I have seen a correlation between the two. Actually, I haven't met a builder yet who isn't accomplished to some level as a player.

SAY WHAT?!?!?!

Scott <<== will probably pay for this post.... :p

What do you think?

That a good cuemaker must have a knowledge and have an ability to stroke well. Or in the simple word. Does the good cuemaker HAVE be a good pool player too.

IMO the maker at one time in his life should have been really passionate about the game . That way he will have an idea how he liked cues.
But, there is really no correlation if someone wants to make pretty cues.

i don't think a cuemaker necessarily has to be a good player or even play pool for that matter. If a person was great at woodworking and had a good grasp of physics, I think he would be able to make a decent playing cue.
