Cues and Guitars.....are they so different?

Them some new fangled geetars!

This poor old country boy will just stick with my 56 Jr. A nice 59 tele wouldn't hurt though!

Carvin!!!!!

Si,

Hey another Carvin fan! Now I KNOW you have great taste!!!

I have owned 2 Carvins. A swamp ash Bolt (great guitar!), and a custom colored CT3.

The CT3 was a custom color. It's a gun metal gray that looks almost black in one picture. If you look closely at the picture of the headstock, you'll see the difference. The color is gray, and the truss rod cover is black.

The Bolt was THE most versatile guitar ever, and if I would have gotten it with a tremolo bar (the bolt T), I probably would still have it today.

Here are a few pictures of what I called "The Gray Ghost" and the Bolt...

I had a 2007 Gibson Les Paul Standard with a 60's style neck. I liked that guitar....but never did enjoy the neck too much (even with the 60's style neck). I took it home to TN and my dad fell in love with it. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He traded me his beautiful, big, black Gibson J200 that I've always loved, and his Sunburst Fender Strat.

The GIBSON sits out in my office and while I've played/sampled just about every accoustic guitar out there...this one was just the perfect combination of wood, etc. It is the best sounding J200 I've ever played. I actually enjoy playing it with my bare thumb, because of the different tones you can create. Fun stuff.

For electrics nothing beats a good maple neck strat (to me) with that classic finish. I do like the rosewood fretboard sometimes...but I'm loving this Sunburst Strat. The big tweed case looks cool as well.

Coolest guitar ever......Murphy-Aged 59 Les paul RI...well....an original 59 would be number one of course, but good luck finding one (and affording it). We have a little boutique guitar store around here that is a Gibson Custom Shop dealer and they have several 58's, 59's, Black Beauties, and a Murphy-aged 59. I would buy one just to look at and pick around on, but those 50's necks are like baseball bats to me...my hands just aren't big enough.

For playability...I'll always be a Strat guy.

My main squeeze......Carvin with stock Carvin pickups, swamp ash body, ebony finger board, Sperzel locking machine heads and a Wilkinson trem. So versatile its untrue. Cues are Szamboti, Thoroughbred, Szamboti. So classic its untrue, he, he!!

The Engles case is worth a mention also. All hand carved from top to bottom by a top saddle maker.

Si,
If you weren't such a nice guy, I would really dislike you. ;)

Mike......Your Carvin's are just too awesome for words. Love them both but check out the neck on the Bolt!!!! How nice is that????

Matt....Murphy aged '59 Reissue....I whole heartedly agree....the coolest guitar ever. I have a/b'd one against a real '59 (I know) and it sounded better than the original......doesn't make me hanker for a real '59 now. Good job, I don't want to live in a cardboard box.

Scott.....I feel the love bro, he, he!!!!

Great thread even if I do say so myself.

I'm sans exciting electrics right now but I have a thing for simple beautiful acoustics. I currently have 2 acoustic 6-strings, 2 classicals (one is technically flamenco), a 12 string, an old Epi-Les paul, some ibanez bass and a mandolin. These two are my babies though.

The Larrivee is an old OM-09, East Indian Rosewood, Maple Binding. Made in the Canadian factory.

The Taylor is a 410, limited edition flamed maple I bought in 2000.

I love both these guitars!

Si,

I agree, for versatility and feel, the Bolt is hard to beat. That one had the birds eye maple fretboard option with Abalone dots! I wish I had better pictures of how nice it was!

I'm actually kicking around the idea of getting another one, but this will be a little different. Probably a stock alder body, humbucker in the bridge, and a trem. I'm also leaning towards the 20" fretboard radius.

One other thing - The CT had stainless frets. After trying those out, I would not want to buy a guitar that didn't have the stainless frets. They are super smooth and last forever!

I usually don't like acoustic guitars but I would cough up my left testicle for a Taylor or a Clapton signature series Martin. That's a nice looking Taylor you have there. I bet it plays like butter.

Nick :)

I'm going to take a guess and say that that is a very old Gibson. There serial numbers are so screwed up way back then though that I'd have no idea what year to call it.

Phil you are killing me!

Post the cream man! I know you have had some 5 and 6 figure axes! At least post the last one that I thought about buying!
Mine is the 5029th guitar of any kind to come out of the Gibson factory in 1956!
10K might get me to blink!:p
However, Phil had a 9 0002 Les Paul Standard! The 2nd guitar of any kind to come out of the Gibson factory of any kind in 1959! Beat that!
And Mr Phil I need a origional pearlie please!!!!:D
Thanks for asking,
Nick :)

All hail the '59.

Bask in its greatness but don't look directly into the flame, you will go blind:D

The cue is a stunning ivory jointed Barry Szamboti. Classic Szam, Notched MOP diamonds, maple windows, beautiful veneer work. Have a look at the ringwork at the joint though....too nice.

Always loved the Firebird!!

Si,

Is that a reissue? That looks far too clean to be an original, unless it spent a lot of time behind glass.

Either way, that is a gorgeous pair!

The 59 is a Reissue mate. I can't afford the real thing. The Reissue is a real expensive guitar anyway, ha, ha! Sounds great and the flame is one of the best I have seen on a Les Paul, certainly one of the best in the UK.

There's a guitar shop in Tokyo that has 4 floors. The third floor is basically a museum of the owners guitars. You guys would cream yourselves walking through there. He's got just about anything you'd want to see.

Always loved the Firebird!!

Is that an original Firebird?

I used to own the exact same guitar. The only difference is mine didn't have the stamp on the pick guard. It was a 1963 Firebird V. I loved that guitar even though it was not very functional as a player.

Sadly, someone knocked it over and it landed face down on the floor and the headstock snapped off. I heard that was a common problem with the Firebirds. I was heartbroken. I had it repaired and sold it not long after. :frown:
