Cuetec Could Look Real Bad

I will be more than happy to play any of you with any cue on my website if you think they are so bad. Oceanweb's got action, jessiedoll you have action as well. Bring your best cue and we'll go at it on the table. If the cue is the problem then you ought to be able to win with ease.

Now, before we get to my kicking your ass on the pool table. Do any of you nits actually have anything to say about what a quality cue is or isn't?

I think you are AFRAID to define it because you are AFRAID that the brands you seek to trash will actually do well in the definition of quality that hold in your feeble brains.

As for the Scratch and Dent section. Those cues aren't bad quality cues. Just as a hail damaged car is sold for less so to is a cue that we have. I am a firm believer in NOT throwing away a good product just because of something that is not detrimental to the play. There have been many people who have benefited from that section,, getting cues that they otherwise wouldn't hve been able to afford. And we get lots of comments back that we were too harsh in our description of the issues with the cues.

So can ANY of you step up to the challenge of actually debating facts or would you prefer to continue to hurl vile and baseless insults?

Russ did you go out and buy a Scorpian cue also or even try one?:p ;) :D

Nope... Schon actually had a reputation already. Archer's shooting with one just gave me the extra little push. I have never heard anything pos/neg about a Scorpion cue.

Besides.. Where the hell did this "Scorpion" name come from? Johnny never had a nickname that I knew of back when he was dominating the Tour. He was just "Johnny Archer". The whole Scorpion thing is kind of corny. I can imagine a pool groupie: "Sting ME Johnny, sting ME!"

Everyone should take a look at the damaged cue gallery. A lot of those quality cues seem to be accident prone.

Yeah, well when you are moving tens of thousands of cues a year then damaged goods pile up.

So I hope everyone does take a look. There are some good deals there on good quality cues. It's at http://www.cuesight.com/scratchanddent.html

I sold my scratch and dent Instroke cases once a year as well and never once did a customer complain about the deal they got.

Yeah Ocean Web, Instroke is on my resume' as well. Don't let that scare you though, it's cases and not cues. In fact, I will leave it off my pool resume. How about that, I will spot you a case company and still bet.

Any cue that is warped is worthless. You are still selling some of them for good chunk of change. One can buy straight cues cheaper.

But, if you can play then you can play even with a broomstick.

And Greg, if I remember correctly, you are some sort of collector or dealer of custom cues. Perhaps I am confusing you with someone who does have a clue about cue. If you are that collector/dealer then I want to DOUBLE THE BET on the resume' comparison AND I will STILL spot you Instroke.

Anyone that buys a production cue at close to retail for it's resale value is deluding themselves. I will grant you that a warped production cue has much less value. The cues are offered at the prices you see. If someone wants one they are free to purchase one with all the issues on the table.

Talking about playability it is well documented that great pool can be played with a warped cue. Speaking to value and resale the cues still have value.

To the player who wants to have a particular model and doesn't want to spend the money then the Scratch and Dent section may offer then an alternative.

Of course you can get "straight" cues cheaper. On our website you can buy cue for less money that are 100% satisfaction guranteed. On any number of competing website you can find thousands of cue that will come presumably in a straight condition.

That's not the point. That's comparing apples to oranges. If someone wants a brand that we carry for less and doesn't mind that it comes with some issues then this is the section to look in. How anyone can make a leap and say that this is an example of poor quality is beyond me.

That's like saying every Schon with a finish bubble is a piece of crap. Most of our cutomers at shows who buy the Scratch and Dent floor models say that it's no big deal the cue is going to be used anyway.

All this is just a poor attempt for others to hide from the fact that they are unable to put a definition of cue quality in words. Let's see the list of things that make a quality cue. Then we can put particular brands in their place from trashy to classy. Come on all you players, all you dealers, all you room owners. Are you gonna tell me that between all the BRAIN POWER and EXPERIENCE on this forum that WE can't come up with a list of qualifications that accurately rate every cue ever made?

If you want to do something for the industry and for the game then tell the industry what a quality cue is so they can build it.

!!!!!!!!!!John Barton

I must agree with John he has some beautiful cues at their site. I really like the cue with that cute little adorable Tree Frog decal on the butt sleeve. Sterling cues can really do a good Tree Frog an I bet they play great too.

If you want to do something for the industry and for the game then tell the industry what a quality cue is so they can build it.

If you want, here are a couple ideas......
1. Most important thing, well seasoned , proper grained wood.
2. Proper construction. No air gaps, putty, excess filler etc. Everything properly cut and fit. Correct materials/adhesives used for the different tasks.
3. I actually like a cuemaker that asks about what taper, ferrule, components etc etc etc the CUSTOMER wants. Because to me a custom cue is just that. Custom made/fit to a particular person. If it changes hands...... its no longer a "custom"
4. If inlays, points etc are your cup of tea, see number 2.
5. A durable finish that wont easily yellow or chip in time. Something that will hold up to minor abuse, because accidents do happen.

If you are talking about a production off the shelf cue........ Everything except number 3 still applies.
I think this pretty much sums it up. You?

There is no pro or serious amateur that would use a CueTec unless they were sponsored. Show me one pro that uses a Cuetec because it's a great cue, and I will eat my words.

I almost agree with you on the sponsorship concept. Why don't you tell me which cues the pros use without being sponsored? How about naming the pros who aren't sponsored by a cuemaker and what they use? Sponsored includes getting the product for free.

I am just curious to know this.

I will tell you one cue brand that two household names in pool play with without sponorship. Meucci. That's right sports fans, that other pariah of the cue world has at least TWO bonafide WORLD BEATERS who play totally unsupported with their cues.

I don't need you to eat your words Greg, you are choking on them right now. What does whether a pro plays with a particular brand or not have to do with it being "trashy"?

Even if only bangers play with Cuetecs it still doesn't mean that the cues are bad quality. But there are some very good players in this world who do play with Cuetec cues. Go to the BCA Nationals, the VNEA nationals, and even the APA national and you find plenty of talented cueists who are playing with Cuetec cues. Some of them even walk around with the cues protected by nothing more than two rubber bands. I would bet a huge bankroll that you with your most expensive cue couldn't begin to lick their boots when it comes to the control over the cueball using those "trashy" cue.

Stop throwing out red herrings and define quality. You make the definiton and then we can rank the cues based on your definition.

I don't know, I didn't see the article, I don't know how they "did" it. Did they take out a full page ad disowning Earl? Did they inform him privately and the magazine made a story out of it with comments from both sides?

Are you speaking of the one comment by Jones Chang where he is quoted as saying that "when Earl loses, he loses himself"? I don't see anything wrong or untrue about that comment. I find it to be a very mellow way of saying that the company can't afford to support his antics any more. Certainy far more gracious than the the retort by Earl.

I am sorry but I don't quite follow the "birds of a feather" logic. Are you trying to equate the support of Cuetec and J-S Sales to the crazed lunacy of Earl Strickland?

I am open. Explain it to me and we'll discuss it.

John,

II perhaps wrongly assumed you had read the first post in the thread that you had posted into six times yourself, "Cuetec Fires Strickland." Straight from that first post:

(begin included text)
My latest subscription to Billiards Digest arrived today, and I read in it that Cuetec has fired Earl Strickland. Cuetec president, Jones Chang, said, "Earl has endorsed Cuetec from 1990 until 2007...He made great contributions to the game and to Cuetec. But when he loses, he loses himself. And that affects the Cuetec image. His behavior is detrimental to our promotion. We have stood by him in the past, but now it is time to end our relationship."
(end included text)

That statement shows a total lack of class. Self serving unnecessary drivel to be blunt. Their problem with Earl? A lack of class. Surely looks like birds of a feather from this seat. A plain one line statement that Cuetec and Earl were no longer associated would have served their purposes far better and similar matters have been handled just that way by dozens if not hundreds of companies in the past.

This has done more to lower Cuetec in my eyes than all of the silliness of Earl has done because a sponsored individual is an indirect representative of a company. The president is not only a direct representative of the company, they are often the primary representative.

Once upon a time MEUCCI made cues that played like no other. They were the weapon of choice for the conditions which were prevalent from the mid-seventies through the late eighties.

At the end of the day BOB will also be regarded as a GIANT in embellishment conceptualization.

As a result of their recent relocation back to the MEMPHIS area they'll be able to hire from a higher skilled labor force which will lead to improved quality.

They ain't dead yet:)

For our edification can you share who the two uncompensated players are..

To give some people perspective.
when Troy Frank won the Derby City Classic 9 ball, he did it with a cuetec, and busted up EFREN in the process.

When i watched Mark Tad play some serious money matches a long time ago, he was playing with one of those Cuetec GRAPHITE cues where the butt and the shaft are the same color. (might i add, that he fired in all sorts of stuff from just about everywhere)

I'd be willing to bet, that if i were to start practicing 10 hours a day like i used to play, that i could take the cuetec that i have and possibly spark up just about everyone in this thread, if not give them some tough competition.

It is NOT about the cue because in the grand scheme of things, Cuetec is a pretty good product for the price. I don't think that there are going to be a lot of guys BRAGGING that they play with a cuetec as they would get more positive feedback with other "custom" cues that make them more esteemed individuals to their peers, but that embarassment or denial doesn't stop the fact that there are some pretty strong players that have brandished a cuetec as a weapon.

They are not junk. They might be inexpensive and everyone has their individual preference as to what they can play with, but if you have people that can play championship level pool with them then it's definitely not about the cue.
It's about who's pulling the trigger.

I think you follow me quite well

(From the thread "Cuetec Fires Strickland" which you have posted into six times at last count)
Cuetc president, Jones Chang, said, "Earl has endorsed Cuetec from 1990 until 2007...He made great contributions to the game and to Cuetec. But when he loses, he loses himself. And that affects the Cuetec image. His behavior is detrimental to our promotion. We have stood by him in the past, but now it is time to end our relationship."

John,

You are a reasonably astute individual. Therefore I don't think that you are simple enough to think that I am "trying to equate the support of Cuetec and J-S Sales to the crazed lunacy of Earl Strickland"

A one line nonjudgmental statement announcing the termination of the relationship would have been adequate, just as such statements have been adequate for dozens of companies before Cuetec in similar situations. The statement by Jones Chang was a self-serving bit of drivel, much the same type of thing that they are dropping Earl for. That does leave Chang and Strickland looking very much like "birds of a feather" therefore the question.

As for the retort from Earl, surely Chang knows him well enough to know how he is going to respond to a public slap. Why Chang chose to make a public battle out of the parting of ways, giving Cuetec themselves a black eye, is a mystery to me.

Hu

I did read it. I still don't see it as you do. While perhaps less could have been said I can't get the context from that one statement. If it was in teh context of an interview then surely you can agree that Mr. Chang said nothing that was untrue or hasn't been said a thousand times more harshly on this forum.

How can one have a problem with the truth? Or is there something in the statement as quoted that is not true?

How is it self-serving to state the honest truth? Mr. Chang gave Earl credit for his contributions to the game, he gave him credit for his contributions to Cuetech. And he stated the reason for Earl's dismissal, leaving nothing to speculation.

I guess we'll just have to disagree on our interpretations. Thanks for clearing up why you feel the way you do.

Also, Cuetec was sold a little while ago to Imperial if i am not mistaken.

It might have been a restructuring decision for all we know.

A little known one-hole player by the name of Cliff Joyner and a stout 9-baller named Danny Medina. I have seen both of these players play countless times with their Meuccis.

Just to keep the record straight.

Cuetec is owned by Jones Chang in China. J-S Sales is the North American distributer for Cuetec. Imperial purchased J-S Sales. Imperial does not own Cuetec.

While Imperial's opinion may have played a part in the decision it should be noted that Jones Chang is the person who paid the bulk of Earl's sponsorship money and not J-S Sales.

Even if the decision was monetary it wasn't like Earl didn't provide enough ammunition. And in light of Earl's reported remarks I doubt they are regretting the decision one bit.

I hope Earl gets it together. He is (was) one of my pool heroes and inspired me way back when. I copied his break style and tried to emulate the fast and loose way he played. No one can deny how great he was, or is. It is sad to see a player of his stature embroiled in so much personal chaos.

I have no DOUBT in my mind that Earl, Buddy, Nick, and Mike could still win as much as Efren if they still had the desire to play as much as Efren does.
But that's another fantasy.
