Hi all . How can i tell if the cushions are going bad ? Is there a simple test that i can do to check its condition to let me know if its time to replve them ? I have a gc iv with super speed . Thanks

With the CB in the kitchen, it must hit the end rail... Hit the head rail
... Hit the end rail... and hit the head rail again. Hit 4 rails minimum.
.

Ralph, that method will definitely test the two ends rails!

I use a flat head screw driver and hold the tip lightly in one hand. Tap the tip of every cushion with the handle to see how each responds. Also, listen to the sound and if it thuds and sounds hard, chances are it's bad. You can also use a finger nail to push in on the tip of the cushion to check for harness.

Wouldn't slow cloth cause the rails to seem a little dead testing this way? I replaced the Monarch Super Speeds on my GCII about 2 years ago with Artemis cushions, I saved the Super Speeds and they seem to be in very nice condition yet. I have a feeling it was the cloth that played slow, not the cushions, it had cloth that was kinda fuzzy or nappy.(best way I can describe it) The gentleman I bought the table from was not a pool player, he bought the table so his grandkids had something to do when they visited (and he ends up with a 9' GCII, go figure), anyhow Im sure whoever set the table up for him just installed whatever cloth they had in stock instead of Simonis.

When it plays bad. Haha.
Mine's fast but it banks short.
I wonder why.
I have Artemis too. Might be a little overrated.

TTP.. I was just stating the WPA table specs for rail cushions. I assumed they would all play the same.
Around the table I would say the CB should travel 8 rails, assuming the cushions and cloth are to spec.

Edit...
I just tried 8 rails on my table... and can do it 10% of the time. I can hit 7 rails about 60% of the time...The pockets get ya' a lot... and it's with a hard hit.

Lengthwise I can hit 4 rails and the CB ends up just past the table center. Cross table I can hit 4 rails and the CB almost gets to the cushion on the 5th rail.

Just wanted to add that my table has Brunswick Super Speed cushions... put on in 2012.

As far as I can tell my Artemis cushions play nice, I do not not have any complaints. Of course your sub-rail angle must be correct for the cushions to play good, regardless of the brand you use, I had my sub-rails modified when I had the cushions replaced.

Feel, sound, and play.

Feel: Most (but not all) rubber will turn hard. You won't be able to compress it as easily by hand. Sometimes when they start to go bad, you can find dead spots in some places that feel stiffer than others. Some other rubber will start to soften and deform at the nose. You'll be able to easily compress it, but it won't spring back to form like it should. You may feel that the nose isn't a well defined line, but instead feels mushy and deformed.

Sound: When the rubber starts to turn hard, you'll noticed it sounding more like the ball is hitting a block of wood that a soft piece of rubber. Sometimes there are other factors that can affect sound though, like loose rail bolts, blinds, loose rail cloth, etc.

Play: Dead rails will not compress properly, so will not send the ball back into the play area properly. They will often kill the speed of the ball coming off the rail, and can sometimes drastically change the angle of the ball coming off the rail.

i guess it depends on the table size when couting rebounds . i have a 9 ft gc iv and with a firm center hit i can rebound about 4 times and the ball would sit in the middle of the table lenght wise . on the width , i can rebound 4 times and land on the middle . is this ok for super speed cushions ?
