Custom Cue butt made without shaft ?

Should you pay for a regular hard rock maple shaft to fit your custom butt cue?
More and more players are using low deflection specialty shafts on their cue butts. Why pay for a regular shaft that comes along with a custom cue butt?
Do custom cue makers make available these low deflection shafts (made by other shaft makers) and do they discount their original shaft from the cost of the fitted low deflection shaft?

most cue builders will use the blank you like

Most cue builders will use whatever cue shaft blank(s) you like. I would far rather have the shaft fitted and ring work done by the original cue builder. You do only pay for the shafts you get.

A couple of years ago I asked a well known cue maker on this site the same question. I asked him how much to make me a 30 inch butt. knowing I had a 30 inch 314 shaft. He told me I was wasting his time. Thank you Mr. Arnot because I found somebody else to build me what I wanted.

A few years ago I asked Brent Hartman aka BHQ to build me a couple of butts to go with the shafts I already played with. He was awesome about it and delivered a great product at a great price.
I would recommend sending the shaft to the cue maker in order to get a perfect match at the joint. I didnt do this due to the shipping charges and time (Canada to U.S.), although Brent suggested that I should, and innevitably the joint isnt a perfect match. This was not his fault and I was still totally pleased with the deal.

I think if you order a butt most cue makers would build what you want. Also I know of some that will match a LD shaft to the butt in lieu of their standard shaft if thats what you want. However if it is a cue that they already built and you want just the butt and want a discount, thats an entirely different situation.

Why not just get an original shaft and put it away so you have an unchalked shaft in case you decide to sell it someday?

Unfortunately, that's what a lot of players do...kind of a waste of $$$ to buy a shaft that is never used. Also, the buyer probably won't use it either, perhaps for the same silly reason, but also because the buyer wants to use a low deflection shaft, also.

PS: and yes, I understand a high value collectable cue in pristine condition having shafts that have never been played.

I don't understand this train of thought unless you could predict it would be a colllectable. Shafts can be made any time.

I'd say the answer to this depends on the likelihood that you will ever re-sell that cue. Until I've had a cue for some weeks or maybe even months, I don't know for sure that I want to keep it forever. If there's any probability that you'll want to sell that cue, then having an original shaft for it would be very desirable from a marketing standpoint.

I'll acknowledge that many custom cues are sold with two shafts (often with the same exact characteristics). The only reason I'd like an extra shaft is for it to be different, ie., longer or different taper/diameter ferrule, tip, etc. so that the shaft could be used for a different reason such as snooker or carom billiards. The logic of carrying the exact same "back up shaft" in case the tip pops off is a weak excuse for buying and carrying the extra shaft. Most players carry a separate break cue which reduces the risk.

Custom Cue butt made without shaft?

Has anyone had a custom cue butt only, made to fit an existing "perfect" shaft?

I haven't done this, but I own some shafts that I'd love to have a nice veneered pointed butt made for them. I've collected a number of shafts over the years some LD and some solid maple and all of them are great shafts. I probably should try to sell some of them, but it would be quite a bit of trouble and I doubt I'd get what they are worth so I'm just hanging on to them.

Yes, but the shaft being "perfect" is subjective to each individuals tastes. I had Larry Vigus (63Kcode on this site} build me a 30" butt for a 30" OB Classic shaft which I already had and deemed to be "perfect". I gave him my specs over the phone and he built me a butt in short time that not only is beautiful (again subjective), but also plays very well! Nicely priced too!!!

I do it all the time as long as its not to skinny of a diameter its not a issue.

and ive made plenty of cues without a shaft, but i always ask for the shaft the person will be using so i can make sure it matches up nicely.

I've had several custom cues made w/o shafts. I specified the joint type, diameter, pilot width/depth, and the spec's for the black w/ silver ring joint collars. Have had all of my cues made to these same specs for matching numerous shafts I'm real comfortable with. Never a problem, and the fit is so close as to be no issue. In some cases, I've had a shaft made by the maker as well, just to check their taper, hit, etc, and to have a shaft by them available for potential re-sale.

This may be the most dumist post I've seen in a while.

Just because you put the words together doesn't mean they are true.

Playing an important set and tip falls off, you are gonna suggest your level of play won't diminish greatly if you change to a break cue or snooker shaft?!:slap:
