cutter for inside threads

I used the search to no avail. Was wondering if anyone can point me in the correct direction. Looking to cut 3/8 threads inside shafts.

> What you are looking for is typically referred to as a thread mill. They USUALLY only cut one particular thread,for example 18 threads per inch,or TPI. You can bore your hole in the shaft to any diameter you want,but these cutters will only do whatever the TPI range is. Some,however,will cut a wide range of thread pitchs,say 18-56 TPI,but those are usually bulkier than you will be able to use for cue work.

Bob Dzuricky of DZCues uses some in his videos,so maybe he can help you with a part number.

Also take into consideration that many of the cuemakers/repairmen that use these probably MADE their own. Tommy D.
 
Or you could save yourself some money and grind yourself a boring bar style cutter out of an old HSS endmill, etc. Just remember to turn your compound rest 29.5 clockwise from 90 for internal threads.

What thread are you looking to cut?

Impossible to find an ID cutter for 3/8 x 10. The ones Joey posted give you 25 and 20 tpi max pitch respectively. Your head size cannot exceed the bored hole size that you are starting with.
Most would first bore the hole, then enter with the cutter to the bottom of the hole, turn on router then move to depth of cut. Turn on lathe in reverse to walk out the thread. This gives a fully threaded hole.
You most likely have to make the cutter with a 1/4 rod of carbide brazed at the end to a carbide cutter. Or just use a tap with a centering nose. You can easily make the tap's nose if you already have a tap and want to convert it. If you have access to a metal lathe that is. I have made all my wood cutting thread taps with pilot noses. Takes less time than you may think. Follows a bored hole like cutting into warm butter.

Actually, the tpi recommendations are just that - recommendations. If you do the math, a 1/4" dia head minus the .150" shank dia will theoretically allow a .050"/side thread depth. If your major thread dia will be .375" and your minor dia is .308" (as in the case of a 3/8-10 FB), that means your thread depth will be only .0335", giving you a comfortable margin for chip clearance, etc.

I know this works. I've been doing it for a few yrs now on EVERY shaft I make. I'm still using my original thread mill, too.

One thing I should mention - there are several vendors selling thread mills, many cheaper than the link provided and ALL have a .150" x 1" long shank. You will have to grind the shank back another 3/8" or so to accommodate the length of most 3/8-10 pins.
