Dale Perry ferrule issues

Has anyone had any problems working with Dale Perry ferrules? I have retipped a few and every single time I notice black to grayish spotting on the ferrule that will not sand out or clean off. It's like it's something in the ferrule material. I ended up replacing the ferrule for one customer. I've never had this happen with any other cues except DP's. Anyone else ran into this before?

I've seen some melamine ferrules do that.
I refused to use them and chucked em in the house cue ferrules bag.

I had the same problem with some melamine ferrules, it was like the glue line between the tip an ferrule you would see a blueish line from the glue. I thought maybe it was not cleaned up properly at first so I cut the tip off and cleaned it up really good and the same thing happened. So it wasn't something I missed or didnt do . <<

I have the "glue line" problem on various ferrules too but the DP is different. It's like black specks and spots all the way down the ferrule. I think the glue line problem may be due to thin tip glue bleeding into the ferrule.

It's in the ferrule material. The LBM Atlas was selling for a while had some of these "surprise" specks that appear as you turn them down. Quality control issue at the MFGR. This is probably what you're encountering. It won't hurt anything structurally but the specs in your view on the ferrule can be distracting and in that way they can be a problem.

just more hot air!

Something like this?
Some LBMs are like this, it for lack of a better term is dirt in the weave. The outside of the rod might look ok, but as you cut into it, you run into this.

Make sure you don't pull the glue back down the ferrule, or any of the color from the edge of the tip can be pulled back and into the pores of some melamine ferrules. Always clean the melamine ferrules before gluing the tip to them. Check for the spots before installing tip and you may find they are already there. Lower quality melamine will grab the black grit off of your sandpaper also. Then the super glue from the tip can seal it into the pores. It is best to blow it out with an air hose before installing tip, if it picks up the grit.

I had some of the same batch Sherm mentioned, and It may be the same Joey is talking about too. It looks like sanding dust getting into the pores, but It was in the LBM.

The tricks Chris mentioned do have to be used on some ferrule types, and is pretty much the standard methods I use, but in this case they did not help me. I also ended up using them on house cues.

Hi,

I work on a lot of Schuler Cues at my pool hall and Ray used those ferrules on his cues. The little black spots are embedded in the material. Just explain it to your customer.

I think one die lot of those ferrules were like that because I bought some new ones from Atlas and they were fine.

I've come across something like that before, I've used soft scrub, the version without bleach, and the ferrule came clean. I've learned the hard way about cleaning the ferrule first too, and had to sand thru the superglue to present a clean ferrule to the customer.

Coating the end of the ferrule very lightly with glue just enought to seal it then let it dry seems to fix the problem with glue bleeding back into the ferrule. Then scuff lightly with 220 or 320 and glue the tip on as usual.

ivorine 3 ferrules I've had were bad for this. Really terrible ferrules.
