Dale Perry Galore

the rest of the story....

I think part(most) of the problems and ill will people have towards DP came from dealers that were sitting on EXPENSIVE inventory. Then when he "changed his business model" he basically said FU to all the dealers that had been with him, bought and sold his inventory, and pretty much helped him get to the point where HE COULD mass produce. Perhaps he should have considered the situation his existing customers and dealers found themselves in. Those were the ones that took a chance in the beginning, and supported his efforts in cue building. IMO

I'd be pretty pissed off too :D

I have never owned a DP, but I have hit with one, and it hit ok, but if Im paying 300 smackers for a cue, a DP would be pretty low on my list. I have heard plenty of horror stories about DP and maybe there are some nice good quality DPs out there, but im not gonna gamble my $300 on it, not when I can get a nice used sneaky or plain jain custom on here for that money.

If DP somewhere down the road started making poor quality cues...no one will believe it because all of the hate out there now. You know like the kid that cried wolf. Johnnyt

A good point and I can understand their position too!

Dale makes a forward balanced cue however I am not a huge fan of the shaft wood used replace the shaft and you have a nice playing cue. He does offer a radial shaft for an extra charge that may be worth looking into.

What number of cues we are talking about. I used to see him at the BCA show with a small desplay and dealers may buy 3 cues. It is not like he was McDermott and had dealers with hundreds of cues. I would suspect in the time it took DP to make the transition these dealers were well aware and he was phasing out his dealers anyway. The dealers were only into the cues wholesale and could easily liquidate them at no loss. No one lost any money on those cues. DP has essentially cut out the middle man and passed the savings on to the customer.

If you clock him just today, he has around $1500.00 worth of cues going out the door in the next few days and that will actually be maybe 30% more because some of those auctions have a few days to go and already have bids.
DP is probably doing 100 to 150 thousand a year just on ebay while most cue makers can't afford to buy shaft wood. Sorry to be so blunt. I doubt DP really cares what other cue makers say about him he has been at this for a long time. He is doing nothing wrong.

This might be valid... but from what I gather, the "wholesale" price for his previously purchased inventory, was higher than the new "retail" price. No he's not McDermott or Viking, or Joss (east) BUT he did have the business and trust of people that could have spent their money on something else. Remember we are talking about public opinion, not volume or his ability to finally make a living selling cues. I don't fault the man for trying to make some coin, hell I bought one on ebay just to see if it was worth the 3bills. it was, just barely. I was lucky to turn it for what I had in it *minus shipping. I can only imagine how I would feel if I was a dealer that spent time and money on inventory I had NO CHANCE of recovering. Even if I only had 3 cues as you mentioned seeing, if I paid $750.00, which would have been 1/2 of the retail, I'd STILL BE PISSED!!!!! :D

one more thing.. I don't think the dealers were in on the details. That's why so many were upset. Dale basically told them after the fact. Oh by the way guys, I'm going to eliminate my dealer network and sell cheaply and quickly on ebay. Oh, and all that inventory? sorry, good luck with that...

Most of his cues go for less than $200. I paid $177 including shipping for mine about 3 months ago. I was bidding on a few before I got mine and as soon as they went over $200 I bailed. He has so many cues on eBay and they are so similar just keep waiting and I can almost guarantee you that in less than a month you can get one in a wood/style you want for less than $200.

He tends to add new cues twice a week. The cues with the auction ending on a Friday or Saturday night tend to go for lower $ probably because people with a life aren't waiting around on a Saturday night for the auction to end and bid the price up.

He is also making money on extras. You can add joint protectors and assorted tips and the prices on the extras is not discount. He also makes money on shaft upgrades.

Buy the cue for less than or around $200 and upgrade the shaft to a radial DP-R for $100. The price of the cue just went up by 50% and all he does is throw on a different shaft (keeping the original). I bet this raises profit margin a fair amount.

Also the $1 certificate drives sales. I know it is a gimmick but it works.

Dale has a good thing going and I would rather spend my $200 and let him get the cash than send it over to the far east.

i have read a lot of good things about his service within the past year even with ebay cues - but also a lot of people complaining. what's the verdict?

The verdict is pass. There are WAY to many better cue makers out there. You can call any custom cue maker and ask if he has any cues left over from a show or something laying around if you don't want to wait to have one made. But If you see one you like try it's your money.

My verdict is I just bought another as a present for one of my grand kids. If you knew me you'd know I wouldn't buy her a piece of crap. I gave her a choice between a Viking in the same price range. Johnnyt

DP Cues

I have had a few Dale Perry cues over the years. I think they play very good and I like the hit on the cue ball. He makes very good looking cues on top on it. Everyone that I know who owns one. All like his cues. They are low cost on top of it. I always have said that: "A 200 dollar cue can beat a 2,000 dollar cue when that 200 dollar cue is in the right hands."

I dunno if this is a new trend, but Ebay has had a ton of Dale Perry cues direct from their factory going for super cheap prices. I dunno what the auction close prices are but I'll keep an eye out.

Dale at one time tried the tradititonal dealer and trade advertsing distribution route at high prices. At one point he must have gotten frustrated and started selling on e-bay.

I don't know exactly when he started selling on E-Bay, but it was at least 7 years ago or more. Initially, he only sold two or three cues a week, all with no reserve. If I recall, he waited for an auction to end before listing another cue. They often came with two shafts. I remember back then we had to fight to get them, and they would get $500 pretty easily, even for a plain cue.

The first DP I bought was back about then, maybe 6 years ago, a really nice maple burl forearm - it was beautiful with ebony points, striking burl figure. I've never seen another cue like it. It was CNC but you had to look closely to see rounded edges because he used a fine point. The cue played fine. His shafts were fat at the joint and the taper was stiff. I think I paid $700 on auction with two shafts. I also had him build a 30" shaft for it - he charged around $100 and I had it in a week.

I played with the cue for a few months, it was stiff and not very lively and was a little thin in the handle area. I liked it OK except I found something I liked better and eventually sold it for about what I paid.

Then I watched over the years as his prices dropped, he sold more and more cues per week, put on a cheap reserve, sometimes offering the same cue and not selling it, etc.

I haven't paid attention to his auctions for the last few years, but when I was paying attention, some of what I think hurt his rep was:

- He sold a lot of really bad sneaky pete's, he put his shafts on cheap house cue butts, with very uneven points, etc. He should not have put his name on some of these.

- For the longest time, he used the Uniloc quick release joint. I don't know what was wrong with those things but I had problems with both of mine, the parts came loose and buzzed (sometimes even falling apart). After too many years of suffering through these, he finally switched to the radial.

- Too many (too frequent) auctions on e-bay. His following couldn't support the many new cues he was offering, plus the buyers on e-bay were re-selling the cues they bought from him too - soon Dale Perry cues were as common as McDermott's - not a good thing to keep values up.

- Reserve auctions - he switched to reserve when the values got too low. Many of the reserve cues were offered and not sold. Some were listed multiple times and the exclusivity suffered when they couldn't be sold, even at embarassingly low prices. Eventually he went to one shaft presumably because prices were so low.

I think Dale was successful on e-bay at one time, but if he is making much money on it now I would be surprised. I agree he does have a fairly large following - and it's pretty much all derived from e-bay.

My DP is on the way

After looking around at some production queues, I just couldn't pass up the price on a DP. Even with shipping, it was only $150, that's 3 times less than I paid for the Meucci I've used for the last 5 years.

I'll let you all know what I think of it in a week or so.

if only he sold some without the shaft. if anyone doesn't like theres and wants to sell just the butt for cheaper, let me know!

Years ago when I bought my first custom cue, and not knowing anything about where to go, I found Dale Perry on Ebay. His ads were beautiful and so were his cues - or so I thought. He even states in his ads that dealer price is $1799.00. I called him and told me that he would sell me a certain 1 of 1 cue for $850 but I could probably buy it for less on Ebay. Now I'm sitting out there willing to pay $$850 for a cue, which he knew, so I put in a top bid of $750. The cue was sitting at around the $350 mark until the very end, when, guess what - one bidder shows up from out of nowhere and bids it up to my limit. A similar cue that I bought for $750 sold a few days later sold for $375. I always found the situation very curious.

It arrived

Got the cue yesterday, and it's really quite beautiful.

Will be shooting with it tonight, so we'll see how it plays.

Can't beat the price, I paid under $160 shipped.

I'll take a pic and post it here soon.

I would say a big negativo on the service. Don't let the "depending on the price of the cue will determine his level of service" fool you. My girlfriend fell in love with a $1000 cue from his website and wanted him to make that cue for her. The cue has turquoise inlays. Well we got the cue and one inlay was messed up and not filled in. She sent the cue back to him to repair and delay after delay happened. He then said it was going to ship this date, and then the following week, and then the following week etc...a month and a half later she talked to his helper and he had not even fixed the cue yet. Well she told the helper to have Dale call her and oops Dale called and said he had been busy and was missing something needed to refinish the cue etc (yeah whatever d*ck). Well she got the cue finally about a month ago and there was crap all over the lizard wrap and one of her joint protectors was missing. Long story short (too late) from a service stand point he is a liar and unless you are buying a cheap cue on ebay that you don't mind losing resale value on, then stay clear. She loves her cue, but no repeat business on her end. Good times and hope you love my little story, give me a beer...

my dp

I bought a dp on ebay for $220.00.and it iis a great hitting cue and is not as cheap as people are lead on to believe.the people who say they are not good cues are just mad because they paid hundreds more for theirs.also if you watch ebay the same cues are always up for auction,he does not sell as many as you think.I think he has bidders to help raise the bids, but i know how to time things.I got my mons for $143.00 and its coco bola wood.I have been to his shop in Orange Park,Fl.I live 75 miles from there.I called him with questions about my cue and he was courteous and made sure i was getting what i paid for.I shoot in the A.P.A. so I use my dp all the time.it just feels right.I hope this eases some minds.I know that DR.Cue "Tom Rossman has a few DP's of his own.Dale also gives out 6 cues every session for the best of the best.each is hand signed and numbered,my friend has a 1/6 and another friend has a 3/6
