Danny D commentating US Open finals?

While Danny was a great player, this is more about the consumer rather than bashing Danny. I paid for a product and Danny's commentary actually took something away from the event. If I had a penny for every comment "he's shooting this one again for his backer" or "he just sold out" after playing a semi-reasonable safety, I would have made enough to pay for the stream. I have purchased several MIH events in the past but this next one I'm going to sit out if Danny is commentating. Some will say "just put it on mute." That is not what I'm paying for. I'll gladly pay half price for the stream and keep my speakers on mute the entire time but I don't think that's an option.
LOL. Perhaps for future streaming they'll advertise the commentators 1st then mention who'll be playing! Bwahahahahaha

If this commentating was on National TV there would be a nation wide boycott, no other sport would accept it or make excuses for it, that includes Darts, Bowling, Horseshoes, pingpong, you name it.

Again, I really like Danny personally - this isn't personal, it's business.
Would I want to be the one to tell him he can't commentate anymore? Hell no!

Danny loves doing this, no doubt about it. I also want him around for many more years.

If somebody has a solution to keep one of our greats employed and happy lets hear it.
As you can see, I'm on both sides here.

Agreed...

I couldn't agree more, I'm sure Danny is a hell of a guy but in my opinion his commentating was terrible. It wasn't just being wrong a lot it, it was too old school -

"Irving Crane could rack two tables at the same time and freeze all the balls" kind of vibe to it.

Watching with some non pool nerds like myself after telling them it's the best tournament of the year, $40k prize, etc. - I found myself at a loss to explain the quality of the commentating when Danny was in.

The stream production was stable and worked great for me, and I enjoyed the event overall.

He could be employed to walk around the tournament venue and talk to the players and solicit gambling stories from them and then periodically join the stream in slow spots to convey the stories. He would just need to remember the stories by the time he makes it back to the booth...oh wait....

The MIH packages were $300, got a lot for the money, the stream, the dvd's, a signed picture of the players and more. Event were 5 player round robins in different disciplines.
No complaints about the event, Accu-Stats tries to give you your moneys worth IMO.

Danny is way past his expiration date when it comes to commenting on today's game.

Nice guy, spent some time with him at a bar, his stories are great, and he was a hell of a player in his day. But, he has not kept up with present day players, tournaments, money matches, and how the game has evolved.

Unfortunately with pool, there is cronyism and guys getting by on their name and past associations, and they suck in the booth, miscalling shots right and left and right. They do a disservice to the how the game ends up being presented to the world and we all suffer with their lousy commentary.

Having said that, guys like JJ are a pleasure to listen to.

Danny D is not perfect, no one is. He has been involved with pool all his life. He ran with Siegel, Rempe, Billy, many other greats. Pls give him the respect he deserves. Mark Wilson also has been around pool all his life, he saw wimpy in one of first US opens!! I felt their commentary was great. JJ is also very good. It was a great tournament all around!!!

I've got an Eddie Wheat cue to sell ya, oh wait, no I don't.

So you'd be willing to pay $2.97 per session rather than the outrageous sum of $5.95 to watch the best players in the world from the comfort of your own home? You should put your efforts towards getting a better job.

I'll try to put it in simpler terms so you can understand.

If I like a product, I will pay regardless of price.

If I don't like a product (including commentary of PPV matches), I will not pay for it. Hence, I will not be buying this MIH event if Danny is commentating.

It has nothing to do with the price of the PPV. It has to do with purchasing a desirable product. His commentary detracts from the value of the stream. Simple enough?

Although I'm not a big fan of DD, I find him tolerable. Several others are much worse but yet, accu-stats could do much better. I liked the one match, forget which one it was but the team was Mark and Melling. Melling gave some good commentary with intelligent insight as well. JMHO

Wilson and Melling did two matches together -- Kaçi d. Appleton on Wednesday and Sanchez Ruiz d. Kaçi on Friday. Melling is good; I enjoyed his work earlier this year at Appleton's 8-Ball events.

for anyone providing harsh commentary on Danny D's commentary, please take a minute to watch the following video and get to know this living legend perhaps a little better:

https://youtu.be/mSgfvJhQ6zw?t=561

When I watch matches that feature Danny in the booth, I consider the man in total, what he's accomplished in his life and what he has meant to our sport, in particular.

Aside from his many athletic and pool accomplishments, I find it truly amazing that a man travelling in the circles he has has never uttered a single swear word. How did he manage that? :grin-square:

I remember listening to him in the booth at Turning Stone a few years ago and he invited *anyone* who wanted a lesson to call his home room in Buffalo and he would be happy to do it for free. This was a sincere offer.

It's not been a well kept secret that if Danny was your friend then you had a true and loyal friend for life. :)

Try to think of Danny's age and all he's accomplished the next time he cracks one of his jokes you've heard twenty times before, or if he mis-calls an upcoming shot.

I, for one, have enormous respect and admiration for him and am delighted that he's still able to make it to some of these events, let alone provide some commentary.

Also, not lost on me is the loyalty displayed by Pat Fleming toward Danny. Old school, good friends, I really like it.

best,
brian kc

Great clip !!!

Danny gets in another HOF Wednesday night !!! :yeah:

lol, says the blue collar high school grad!

Danny D commentating

I wonder how good you'd be doing commentating at 83 years old and blind in one eye?

Quality of Commentators

I'm not one of those who paid for the MIH event, but I do watch a lot of matches on YouTube. Having watched all
those videos I can definitely say that good commentating adds value to a match and bad commentating detracts.
In my opinion Danny D. is on the wrong side of that equation. Having said that, I think that if he is paired with a
good commentator and doesn't dominate all the commentary he is tolerable.

On the other hand, one of the worst matches I ever watched had Johnny Archer doing commentary. He talked almost
continuously and seemed to think the viewers cared as little about the match as he obviously did since he only occasionally
noticed that there was a match in progress. That was one of the rare times I had to turn off the audio.

I heartily agree that Darren Appleton and Chris Melling definitely add value to a match.
