Darren Appleton world 10 ball champ!!!!!

JB Cases said:
Say whatever you want to but Darren had to beat world champions to get this title. He had to beat one of the strongest players in the world to win. Just about EVERYONE had him as the underdog in this match.

The top Filipinos were able to play. They decided not to and it was a courageous decision.

That does not detract from the quality of this win by Darren. At the end of the day, it was him against a player who is as strong as any other player on Earth, who is also a double world champion.

Last year the World Nine Ball championships was contested and all the top Filipinos were there. Only one made it through to the finals, an unknown named Gomez. The winner however was a brit named Peach. So don't detract from this win by Darren Appleton by saying that it's hollow because some of the top names weren't there.

That's like saying no victory is worth anything if certain names aren't in attendance.

There were plenty of PROVEN champions at this event who did NOT make it all the way. Champions that have soundly beaten all the famous Filipino players who did not attend the event.

We all agree that the event was different and certainly less spectacular without the top Filipinos in attendance. But it was still top flight world class pool. And it was made even tougher for the players who did participate because of the politics surrounding the event.

The fact is that an underdog who is relatively unknown despite his vast experience came through and won a tough event. He beat champions to do it and now can respectably count himself among the list of World Champions.

Good on you Daz!!!!!!

(and thanks for making me some money) :-)

TAP TAP TAP!

I wonder if the newly crowned champ has gambled with some of his winnings yet. One more thing that is missing from this championship is the action reports.

action reports aren't usually publicized. even Alex P.'s debt was not even known until he said it in the papers. so I won't be surprised if some of the participants got more or less what they had asked for. losing money is painful enough, no need to brag about it. publicizing it, would be like dipping one's wounds in a bag of salt. besides, just think what would people think about a person being crowned as World Champion, only to lose his earnings outside the arena playing and gambling against a non-participant? truly embarrassing.

Marlon Manalo is 3rd tier?

The fact that Alex, Busta, and others whinged on the event and shot themselves in the foot for whatever reason is their own fault and bad move. Not that many $100,000 paydays in this sport. There was still a world class field in this event, Yang, Wu, Fiejen, SVB, Peach, Souquet, Hohmann, Chang, Kuo, Van De Berg, Deuel, Immonen, Archer, Ortmann, Jeong, ect....

The Phillipines could have sent whoever they want and they are not assured of winning this event.

Maybe next year your top teir players will lose whatever chip on their shoulder they have and actually take the shot at winning a 6 figure payday. Otherwise, there is still a world class field at this event with or without them.

I am sure Alex, Busti, and whoever else you had in mind do not think for one second they "shot themselves in the foot". The reasons for them not participating has been WELL documented here - obviously you haven't been keeping up. And (here we go again) what gives you the right to think they have a "chip on their shoulder?? Once again, you haven't been keeping up with what's been going on.

I applaud Darren for winning - you are right about the field still being World class. In no way would should that be taken away from Darren's win. But to point-the-finger and accuse these top-tier filipino players as being arrogant/stupid/prideful/whatever for not playing is ignorant of you. You are talking about the some of the most friendliest and easy-going players in the WORLD!!! Have some respect, or know your facts (at least) before throwing around allegations about players characters and reasons for not playing. Check yourself man!

Congratulations!!!!!

Well done on getting through a tough field of formidable opponents. Like the saying goes, "NEVER give up!".

I guess Celtic clearly missed the point here. nobody here was shooting on Darren but rather express some disappointment that some of the fan faves weren't able to participate. and guess what, Celtic came out blasting those players that it's their fault without giving them even an ounce of a benefit of a doubt. branding those players like a bunch of bad guys is clearly disrespectful and arrogant.

I dunno but it seems that his concept of prize money equates that of respectability. well for starters, those players sacrificed their opportunity to join the event for honor's sake. so how can Celtic here say that being honorable makes you a bad person? truly arrogant and insensitive in his part. he should be careful on what he says coz surely those guys would give anyone a challenge to those who dared to go to Manila for some serious action. just remember what Lely experienced a year ago and others that came, "make sure that you dont lose even your shirt on your back" or "lose more than what you bargained for". they were nothing joking, but giving those who dare to venture with some sound advice.

as the saying goes " RESPECT IS THE ULTIMATE CURRENCY ". no 100k tournament could ever guarantee that. got balls outside the safety of the tournament hall?

You already assume that Darren would lose playing money. Maybe you don't know he can hold his own. He might not be the favorite against the Filipinos but he ain't Mickey Mouse neither.

I'm asking for action reports from the posters present in the event. Everyone knows that's not something you usually read in the paper.

I've asked for action reports back when it was only the round of 32!!! No replies, so I wonder if there has been any at all?? Hard to believe that there was NO action, especially in the philippines

Alex told me that Darren got into action a lot (prior to this event when he was in the Philippines)...and even when he lost he took it as a learning experience. In fact, if I remember correctly, either 2007 or 2006 WPC in Manila, Darren stayed for like month (or longer) after the tournament was done. Just to stay in action and to better his game. THAT to me shows great dedication and sense of humbleness by Darren. Great sacrafice, and determination as well. It is the ultimate "icing on the cake" for him to have won the WTBC. I am sure that many (if not all) the top BMPAP players are happy for Darren's win.

Even though I thought Wu was a guaranteed favorite, I never wrote Darren off. I remembered even in the IPT events he had gotten pretty far and had beaten some good-named players too. I never had even heard of him them, but that proved a lot to me. Since then, he seems to only be getting better and better. Good for Darren and Daryl (peach) and Britain! Must feel great to be be pitted as underdogs and come out victorious??!! I should know I'm from Hawaii...lol!! (For those that don't know>Hawaii sports/athletes are ALWAYS considered underdogs...lol!)

I'm not assuming anything JohnPt. what I'm saying is that Celtic should be careful not to underestimate nor undermine the Filipinos either. as Phoebe pointed out, the Europeans would gain or learn something more if they play in the P.I. rather than in Europe. surely we could count the number of European and American players who tremendously improved their game by staying a few months in the P.I. such improvement that they didn't attain in their own home soil. that alone should tell a lot to what caliber of players we are talking here. so don't start pushing where you had only just begun.

No trashtalking here, just respect. when Efren and co. decided to boycott the event, they were not out of their minds. but rather there is more important rather than playing in a 100k event. money and prestige is not everything. that's what celtic failed to understand.

You the man, Pal! Don't feel bad about winning the tournament. The rest of the field were only human afterall. :D

Congratulations Darren!

You are one of the greatest persons in this game. I admire your attitude, dedication and skills! Think this will be the first title of many in major tournamants! (US Open next ;))

If you happen to be in London-area during mid november we should try to play some one-pocket! I would love to beat a World Champion ;)

A True World Champion

I was there. Watched the finals. One of the best played finals ever by Darren, against another one of the best played by Wu. With all due respect, the way Darren was playing I'd have given him an even chance or favored him against any of the boycott players. In Manila before the event Darren could not get any action because no one wanted to play him. How do you like them Apples? Great job Darren! I did not know he had only been playing American pool for 2 and 1/2 years!?! What! That's crazy.
