Ah, the back room at Jointed Cue. I think that's Chris MacDonald with his back to the camera.

Shocked! I knew Dave years ago in California - haven't seen him in years but I always thought he took very good care of himself (he boxed if I remember correctly) so was surprised he had health problems. My condolences to his family.

I don't think that's Chris M. in the Jointed cue picture. That sure looks like Lisa in the middle black and white picture though.

A friend of mine took a few lessons from Dave years ago and started playing much better pool afterwards; I think he probably had a bigger impact on Bay Area pool than a lot of players think between his play and his instruction of younger players.

Next time I see Chris MacDonald, I'll ask him about any road or tournement stories he might have about Dave.

Might see some others, still here and gone....

In the 3rd photo you can see Doug Klisch sleeping. Dave would do this often to people while running rack after rack.

In the 4th photo it is Dave sitting with Jay Swanson (I may be wrong) and the player on the right is Rudy Jurez.

In the last photo it is Paul Brienza with his back to the camera, Al "the Plumber" Wichenbaugh is sitting next to Ted Ito and "Kimmer".

That's definitely Swanee and I think you're right (and I was wrong) -- that's Doc Brienza.

I heard the news yesterday from the Owner of Crown Billiards. I knew he had a bad back even after his surgery, but I was unaware of his heart condition. I am really going to miss him.

When I got back into playing pool after a 20 year hiatus, I took lessons from Dave at the Broken Rack. I also would see him at Felts (now Crown) in San Ramon, where he was the house pro. He is the person who convinced me to play in the leagues there. I still play in those leagues today. Dave was a good friend, had the smoothest stroke, and always had a great attitude. Many times he would come down and play even though he was in pain. He loved the game that much.

This is a huge loss to our community. My prayers go out to his family.

Dave seating with Swanee at the Jointed Cue in Sacramento. And then Dave and Kim, with Chris MacDonald leaning on the pool table and Ted Ito and Al "The Plumber" next to them. Thanks for the pics.

I believe that Brienza sitting on the table. In the other pic, thats Lisa D'atri watching the game.

Here's Chris near that same time, with Filipino Gene sitting.

I stand corrected. Chris was thinner then.

Dave Piona

I had the pleasure of knowing Dave since about 1995 when I came back to pool after a long break from The Great Game.

I went to him for lessons for a while getting my game on track. He was always a gentleman of the game, and he could play!

I grew up playing in Memphis during the 60's, and Dave shared some of his stories about his road trips to Memphis. We met each other frequently at tournaments over the years, and he always greeted me as if we were old friends.

Dave was a class act. Sincere sympathy to Dave's loved ones on his passing.

Anyone else out there have photos of Dave playing or in a room?
