Who watched the match ?

All i can say is that i am appauled, Alex deserved an Unsportsmanship Like Conduct foul. Although i am not sure what the deduction is, i believe in a 100 point game it should be like 25 balls at least.

What do you guys think ? and sorry if i gave away a spoiler for the dvd.

Just a Little Miffed !

both players were on 2 fouls and Alex stepped up to the table and scooped up all the balls and said... i will re-break ! accepting a 15 ball foul for being on 3 fouls.

Years ago during one of the 14.1 Opens efren got an unsportsmanship like conduct foul for intentionally fouling but not using the tip of his cue.

your crying about a guy accepting a 15 ball foul? Now I have heard it all... I thought hearing you in the chat whining was bad. damn man.

Etiquette

I'd say whether he performed the intentional scratch or not is a moot point since the re-rack would have been in order immediately following the 3rd intentional foul. Committing it or conceding it (as he did) would have had the same result. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that.

But his decision to do what he did can be viewed as poor etiquette in a professional tournament. I know Steve, like a lot of diehard straight pool players/fans, still view 14.1 as a gentleman's game and cringe when a player takes the liberty to depart from what historically would be considered acceptable protocol.

And I saw Efren's intentional foul that cost him an unsportsmanlike penalty. 2000 US Open Straight Pool Championship against Dallas West when Efren was up 141 to 0. Judging by his reaction he obviously didn't know that what he did was illegal.

It would have been better for him to have nudged the cue ball an inch with his cue, but since Mike had no choice in whether to have a re-rack or not after the third foul by Alex, I don't see that there was any harm done. If I had been the referee, I would have given him a warning and racked the balls for his new break.

Ken Schumann was not happy that Alex did it, but decided not to penalize him anymore than he did.

Other than that small little footnote that was barely noticed by the people there, how did you guys like the rest of the match?

I thought it was great. Runs, safes, intentional three fouls by both guys.

SJM was grinning ear to ear.
Ken said it was the best straight pool match he had seen in 20 years.

We had a 45 second shot clock on the players and that really moved things along nicely.

As I told you yesterday, Steve, if you want to try to promote the game, accenting the positive aspects of the game might be the way to go. Alex brings a little chaos but a lot of drama to our game and it should be encouraged.

Dennis:

Great post. I saw you in the VIP seats (front row around the arena) for both the Niels Feijen / Beau Runningen and the Alex P. / Mike Davis matches, and was shaking my fist at my computer screen, cursing you out for being such a lucky dog to go to DCC. :p I'll go next year, though -- if it kills me.

I agree that we need a player like Alex in our sport. Make that NEED with capital letters. Alex is such a personality -- and such a player -- that a few of his quirks can be overlooked. Hey, when you look back, weren't some of the best and most memorable 14.1 players a little quirky? Greenleaf and Mosconi certainly were; so were Jimmy Mataya, the Miz, and Sigel. I think Alex is along those lines, if he can just be advised where "that line" is he needs to toe (and occasionally step over, to add a little drama). He's certainly got the chops, and his post-match interview with Samm Diep seemed to be heartfelt -- that he's going to put forth new effort into practicing 14.1 because "it's a foundation game" as he says. Hey, he bought a rule book, and was consulting it during the match (albeit in the usual funny Pagulayan way -- when he was teasing Mike during the match).

Look at it this way -- when was the last time you saw a straight pool match -- yes, a straight pool match(!) -- on Accu-Stats where not only were the two competitors laughing it up, but got the whole audience involved as well? That's the kind of stuff you see in, I don't know, ring games or something. In-between my fist-shaking at Dennis' image in the VIP seats on the screen ;) , I was looking around at the audience, and they seemed to LOVE it! That's the kind of exposure we need TODAY for 14.1 -- not the stodgy old codger "bow down and pray at the 14.1 gods altar" days of old. Don't get me wrong -- world 14.1 championships? Definitely full dress code and traditional respect for that. But let's not look a gift horse in the mouth -- these 14.1 Challenges are a great spin on the game, and bring the game to a new audience. An audience that will fully appreciate the fact this game doesn't necessarily have to be bootstrapped with the "stodgy old codger boring" image.

While I'm at it, I'd like to offer our own Charlie Eames huge kudos for being one of those on the forefront in offering this nice twist on our game (i.e. the 14.1 Challenge) to the big venues. I'll certainly be at this year's SBE, and I'm looking forward to being a part of it! And let's make it FUN!!

I guess i let the match get the best of me since i was rooting for Mike. But as a whole i should be happy and rooting for the game of 14.1 on yet another great event to promote the most beautiful game in Cue Sports..

Sorry Guys !

You dont have to apologize for anything period. You saw something that makes the game look not as it should and you called it out. There is nothing wrong with that.

Did Alex do something without thinking of etiquette etc ? Yes apparently he did. I think Ken Schuman was in an incredibly tough spot at that point and having been in that spot before I can say it is rough.

As for apologizing Steve don't bother you did nothing wrong but caring about the game you love.

As for showing the game and its combatants in a positive light etc. What good is that going to do if you are simply hiding the negatives instead of trying to better them.

Thank You Charlie !!!

I guess i am just a stickler for the rules, and like i said before deep down inside i was gunning for Mike to take down the event !

As for the appology, you know me i am not one to cause a stink... And i wanted to nip it in the bud before things got carried away is all !

Once again we should all praise that there is more and more 14.1 happenings going on.. it is what will all wished that would some day happened.. we need to embrace that !!!

Charlie, I take it you are responding to my suggestion that we should talk about what a great match it was rather than talk about Alex's foul.

What good it could do would be to introduce others to the game,or re-energize interest in the game. The whole arena was enjoying the game and smiling and laughing and "oohing and aahing". I thought on the whole, it was good for the game.

What Alex did should have been a footnote to a great match.

Did you watch the match, Charlie? What was the best part about it in your estimation?

Once again we should all praise that there is more and more 14.1 happenings going on.. it is what we all wished that would some day happened.. we need to embrace that !!!

Steve: I know that you want the best for straight pool. Little by little we will get there. We are hoping for a big bang from you and Charlie in Phlly.

Dennis I'm not saying that the match wasn't fantastic or the event as a whole as I have heard nothing but good things, and no I didn't watch it as I plan on supporting Pat and the game as I always do by purchasing the dvd set. To answer your question yes I was responding to you and please of all people you don't have to tell me about trying to re-energize the game or doing things for our sport.

Again I'm not saying the match wasn't fantastic however what Alex did was wrong and I agree with Steve that this could cast a bad light on the etiquette and sportsmanship of the game which since we are trying to re energize said game we wouldn't want something like that being seen by the audience we are so trying to induce.

I really don't care to argue this point with you as I feel it is incredibly trivial and will do neither of us any good. I know you have the best intentions at heart for the game and although our opinions on this one may differ you are still a friend and ally in the fight to continue the straight pool dynasty that is going on now.

I hope the finals go well.

Fine, Charlie. I was just responding to "you of all people's" question as to what good it would do to dwell on the positive. I, too thought it was a trivial point and wished people had chosen to speak about other aspects of the match.

To change the subject and move in a positive direction, I understand the semis are now being played on a table away from the tv arena.Marop just texted me 39-28 Appleton. No video since Dana and I are gone and have taken our cameras with us. Had we known that Accustats was not going to do the match, we probably would have gotten it done yesterday up in the straight pool room and had video.

The finals will be in the arena after the semis and there will be commentary I have been told.

I am converting the first three matches and some of the runs and will get them up in the next few days.

Peace out!

Dennis,

I am sorry that i brought up a Negative part of a match in your event, it was just meant as a discussion and no mallace was intended. The positives yes there was plenty, kudos to you, Marop, and Elvicash for getting her done and for putting yet another notch on the belt !!!

And just who hits a bankshot as a Key Ball ? Mike Davis does, and how'd he hit that one sir ?????

there was some great play. both offensive and defensive, in this being the only match that i had watched due to my erratic schedule. I had seen something in the match as i do in all matches and the intention was to just start a discussion about it since i hadnt seen any discussions about any of the other matches that had been played.

Again i meant no harm, and it is a great thing that you and the sponsors have provided for us all. cant wait to see the qualifying runs and of course the dvd's

-Steve
