Dennis:
Great post. I saw you in the VIP seats (front row around the arena) for both the Niels Feijen / Beau Runningen and the Alex P. / Mike Davis matches, and was shaking my fist at my computer screen, cursing you out for being such a lucky dog to go to DCC.

I'll go next year, though -- if it kills me.
I agree that we need a player like Alex in our sport. Make that NEED with capital letters. Alex is such a personality -- and such a player -- that a few of his quirks can be overlooked. Hey, when you look back, weren't some of the best and most memorable 14.1 players a little quirky? Greenleaf and Mosconi certainly were; so were Jimmy Mataya, the Miz, and Sigel. I think Alex is along those lines, if he can just be advised where "that line" is he needs to toe (and occasionally step over, to add a little drama). He's certainly got the chops, and his post-match interview with Samm Diep seemed to be heartfelt -- that he's going to put forth new effort into practicing 14.1 because "it's a foundation game" as he says. Hey, he bought a rule book, and was consulting it during the match (albeit in the usual funny Pagulayan way -- when he was teasing Mike during the match).
Look at it this way -- when was the last time you saw a straight pool match --
yes, a straight pool match(!) -- on Accu-Stats where not only were the two competitors laughing it up, but got the whole audience involved as well? That's the kind of stuff you see in, I don't know, ring games or something. In-between my fist-shaking at Dennis' image in the VIP seats on the screen

, I was looking around at the audience, and they seemed to LOVE it! That's the kind of exposure we need TODAY for 14.1 -- not the stodgy old codger "bow down and pray at the 14.1 gods altar" days of old. Don't get me wrong -- world 14.1 championships? Definitely full dress code and traditional respect for that. But let's not look a gift horse in the mouth -- these 14.1 Challenges are a great spin on the game, and bring the game to a new audience. An audience that will fully appreciate the fact this game doesn't necessarily have to be bootstrapped with the "stodgy old codger boring" image.
While I'm at it, I'd like to offer our own Charlie Eames huge kudos for being one of those on the forefront in offering this nice twist on our game (i.e. the 14.1 Challenge) to the big venues. I'll certainly be at this year's SBE, and I'm looking forward to being a part of it! And let's make it FUN!!
