DCC or World Team

Some of you might remember this thread I started two months ago, about what event the pros would choose, World 8-ball or DCC. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=152199

Now it is confirmed that the World 8-ball will not be in January, but in April.

Still, the scheduling conflicts aren't over yet...

I have heard from 3 World Champions now, that they are considering to not play at DCC because the last day of DCC is on the same date as the start of the new WPA event, the World Team Championship.

I have no facts about the Team event, other than that it will be in Hannover, Germany. I think that it is a 4 or 5 man team per country, with $ 100,000 first prize, but I can't find that info anywhere.

Perhaps the 4-5 best Americans, Filipinos etc will also go to the team event?

Anyone have some more information about this?

And when looking at the calendar at WPA's website it looks like they have just added a WPA Tour event in Cebu, Philippines, from the 19th to the 24th of January.... :(

Please thank all with the WPA for respecting the dates of the DCC.
 
Very true. The WPA schedules and holds no events. If you must go down the worthless road of blame you have to seek out the promoters, not the WPA.

Who is the promotor of the WPA World Team Championship?

And the Cebu event is part of the WPA tour, so surely WPA could have asked them to chose a different date, couldn't they?

(I do know that the fault is on DCC for not asking the WPA to sanctioning this event, but I still think there is more than enough weekends for promotors to choose from, instead of ruining the attendance for a major event like the DCC)

The WPA does ask promoters to change dates to avoid conflicts whenever possible. Dates do change every year because of this. But sometimes convention centers are booked for a year or more in advance and promoters have to take what they can get. Usually, when there is a one day overlap of events such as this the promoters of the events will call one anther and work out arrangements where everyone can play. For instance, there is a Eurotour event that ends on the day the US Open begins this year. So Gre and Barry talked and worked out an arrangement where anyone playing in the Eurotour on Sunday gets a delayed start time at the US Open.

In 2004, Jerry, the European players who were competing in a tournament in Europe were given a bye at the U.S. Open.

They arrived in Virginia on Tuesday for their first match. Most of the field of players were required to be at the Chesapeake Conference Center on Sunday night for the players meeting.

It was a kind gesture to the European players by the U.S. Open organizers, but to the rest of the field, it seemed a little unfair for them to receive byes.

Usually, the field is seeded with byes on the ranking system, which used to be UPA and now is, I guess, BCA ranking list. I'm not sure anymore. One year, they gave buys to the pool players who competed in the senior tournaments, which was great for the senior players over 55. :smile:
