Hey guys i wanted your thoughts on glasses vs contacts which one is more usefull for you. Also since i have glasses that are kind of small and i seem to miss most of my shots b/c of it i was wondering how you guys deal with glasses, hopefully if you guys tell me how you deal with it i can take that information to benefit me.

thanks,
alex.

I wear bifocles which do not lend themselves to shooting pool. The last time I went to the eye doctor, I asked him to write me a prescription that would give me the best vision possible between 3 and 10 feet. I used it to get glasses just for shooting pool. I had them made with the largest frames possible, and asked them to make them sit up a bit higher on my face, so when I bend down on a shot and look up, I'm still looking through the lenses, and not at the top of the frames.

RandyG who posts on here has some special sport glasses that he is a distributor for. He can probably fill you in on them.

I got fed up with my glasses and couldn't wear contacts, so I got Presby Lasik and love my results.

Just another alternative.

rufus. I wish I could have lasik, but my doctor tells me it won't work on my vision. Right now, I'm in the process of getting 1500 laser shots to one eye, just to try and keep my eyesight. I got 830 last week, and will get the rest in about 2 weeks.

I wish i could get lasik but b/c im just getting out of college the only thing i have now is debt lol

I have worn glasses for many years. The glasses I have bought for the last 8 years have no frames around the lenses. Temple and nose pieces actually fit into the lenses. The lenses are of "normal" size (niether large nor very small). They are progressive bi-focals and I have no issues while at the table.
On another note, a good friend had a pair of glasses make just for shooting pool, and he loves them (no bi-focal for 3-10 feet).

I wear glasses and for me I have some trouble. Don't mean to be a sob but I was born with two damaged eyes and for me to see at all is a miracle. I try to make playing pool the best I can. My glasses help ALOT!! Without them I could only make out somewhat of the color of the pool balls. SO me wearing glasses doesn't bother me one bit.

Pool Glasses

Without question buying billiard glasses has helped my game more than any other piece of equipment I have bought, with the exception of my diamond table. I was considering the kind the kind that Randy sells but decided on the ones from the eye doctor in Canada. Just google billiard glasses and he will show up. I tried buying big frame glasses but the billiard glasses were vastly superior.

If I'm not mistaken, these are the glasses Karen Corr wore (or still wears).

At 41 I consider myself lucky that I still have better than 20/20 vision. However, back to the original glasses vs. contacts question - my wife has horrible vision (maybe that's why she married me??). Very thick glasses, and like the OP they are small which result in a lot of issues shooting, especially the long shots. When she wears contacts her game noticeably improves. She bends farther down (more natural for her), has no issues with long shots, and overall plays much better. Like others, she will be going in for lasik, already scheduled for October. I have yet to meet anyone who had lasik that wasn't thrilled with the results. Obviously not an option for everyone. Coming from someone who has never worn glasses, has an ex wife who was legally blind without them and got lasik, and a current wife with terrible vision without glasses/contacts, the convenience and quality of life improvements after lasik are well worth the few grand. Better pool playing is just a nice side benefit.

I bought a pair of glasses that are supposed to be billiard glasses, but tbph, they are complete shite!

Randy, can you PM me a website address for the Billiard Glasses that you deal in, I'd certainly appreciate it alot

With having worn glasses from I was about 4 years ols, getting a good pair of glasses that allow me to shoot pool without the top of the frame getting in the way, has always been a royal pain in the twin air bags at the best of times, and it's only recently that I've been trying to get a pair of glasses that are very similar to those used by 1985 world snooker champions, Dennis Taylor, (Who is also from N. Ireland  ) but unfortunately regular retail optician companies aren't in any way knowledgeable about what are the exact requirements for good Billiard glasses, and so most players who where glasses are left with the same ol' problems and obstacles over and over again.

I'm contemplating on speaking to an optician about having custom Billiard glasses made to my exact specifications, but it depends on what the cost will be and if it will really be worth while? :)

P.S. I have a little handy tip for those of you who do wear glasses for shooting pool:-

If you find that the bridge of your nose is quite narrow like mine, carefully bend the nosepads on the glasses further intowards the center of the frames, this will make the glasses sit that little bit higher up and should help you to see the shots a little better and more comfortably

Randy posted his phone number in post #3 on this thread, if you want more info on the glasses.

Thanks, but I'm in the UK and am not keen on the bill of calling international, been there, done it, and got fed up of the rip off call charges :) lol

I have horrible vision without glasses...pretty much legally blind...very nearsighted. I have worn glasses all my life. I also have a bad astigmatism.

I have been told that I am not a candidate for laser vision surgery.

I wear progressive bifocals, and I suppose that I have gotten used to them over the years. I had an optometry appointment 3 weeks ago and got new glasses. I wanted a pair of single vision glasses focused on the pool area...say 2' to 12', but the doctor said there was no single vision lense that would help me in that focal range. He said the progressive lenses were my best bet.

My prescription:

OD: -2.50 -2.25 x076

OS: -2.50 -2.50 x088

+2.25

PD: 63/60

Any ideas?

Joe

I also have small glasses, and I didn't want to have to rely on a special pair to play if I didn't have to. I'm legally blind without them and have slight astigmatism, but I'm lucky to have 20/15 vision when corrected (occasionally making out the 20/10 line). I'm a candidate for the surgery and will probably do it in the future, but I've been warned that my vision may not be as good afterwards as with the glasses. (It's hard to predict the results, and I'm happy with my current setup, for now).

When I bought my frames, I had the tech carefully rotate the lens-holding part ever so slightly upwards until I could see clearly through the tops (it was a bit blurry/distorted before the bend). We did it incrementally until things just came into focus, and the bend ended up being so small that you could only tell it was there when side-by-side with an unbent pair. It doesn't seem to affect my normal usage at all.

I don't have a side view of the frames themselves, but I've attached some tournament photos taken by cuetable (thanks, Wei!) that show how they fit. The first one shows me looking through the tops of the lenses on a shot that's a bit of a stretch. The second shows a frontal view so you can see the frames aren't perceptibly distorted for normal wear (i.e. I'm still looking through the centers of the lenses).

These are my everyday glasses, and it's great to be able to use them to play comfortably as well. Without that small tweak, though, I would've had to invest in a special pair.

Robert
