Decent deal on a GC I?

I'm looking at getting this GC I table for $850...

They claim they have all the parts... From these pictures does it look like a good deal? How much work is normally involved in getting one of these old GC's leveled up after sitting in someones garage for awhile? Also, anyone know if the wood boards on top is part of the structure that is supposed to be underneath it, or if it's just some random wood on top of it?

Those 3 pieces of wood look like the Slate Backing. Don't know why they would have taken them off but I would assume it could cause damage to the slate. If you have links to bigger picture we could probably see the condition a little better. Assuming everything is there and the cushions are ok, it would be in the ballpark of 600 to get it installed and leveled with new Simonis. This is assuming you move it to your location.

If the cushions need to be replaced you are looking at a couple more hundred. I think as a pure gamble on condition and missing parts, I would pay around $700 for the table.
 
its hard to tell by the picture. It looks like it missing an apron and the ones that are there don't match. it might need alot of work. If its missing an apron don't buy it.
 
They have told me the apron is there, just not on the table right now.

Most of the work I'll be doing myself along with the help of a friend who is a room owner and table mechanic. Already assuming anything I get I'll be replacing the rails with most likely SuperSpeed's and putting on Milliken SuperPro cloth on it (it's the cloth my local room uses and I like it).

For matching of the apron's and such not too concerned as this table is literally going to be in my garage :) Basically I want a table that plays well, don't really care about the looks. And I love old tables with a lot of character.

Wish I had better pictures of it... Those are from the ad they placed...

Even looks as tho the slates are layed on the table upside down. Maybe a mis match.
Why wood somebody take the backer frame off ?? IMHO, I would have someone with more experience and knowledge than you have a look see at this basket job.

Well, with that being said and you already replacing the cushions, I think its a fair deal. I would still try to find out why the slate backing was removed. Maybe offer 750. Btw I just sold an old GC and it had spent many years in a pool hall, and it still played great.

If you give me your email, I will forward you some GC documents I got from Brunswick. Included is an installation manual that may assist you when checking for missing parts.

On the earlier crowns, slate frames were held on by screws. These screws were normally very close to the slate screws themselves but shorter. If you are not familiar with tables a lot of people mistakenly remove these
slate frame screws by mistake. They remove every screw they see on top
then go to remove the slate and every frame comes off! We see this all
the time, unfortunately!

I should try the Milliken cloth. Simonis seems to be the only cloth that stays as tight as the day I installed it. feel the cloth at you pool room and see if you get any movement?

It is as tight as most places Simonis is after it's been on for a while. I've been really happy with the speed of it. Maybe John Hendrick will pipe in on how it's been holding up compared to the Simonis he used to use. IIRC he was saying he's getting an extra month or two out of the SuperPro. It's now on all his Diamonds and Gandy Big G's. Haven't heard anyone complain that they wish it was Simonis instead, or complain about the speed...

If Steve Jennings is watching this forum topic maybe he can pipe in as well as he likes to play at the same room.

Depends on the installer :)

I have no idea if I've played on Hainsworth or Champ before, probably not...

But I've played on both 760 and Super Pro and IMHO they are pretty damn similar...


But than again, I'm just a hack so my opinion doesn't mean much :)

You did good on the deal a couple of slates are upside down. Ball return worth a couple of hundred+ you have original slates. Take your time clean it all up maybe tighten the pockets up a little since your putting new rubber on.
