Deer Antler Ferrule

Need some mules for buttplates.

You & me both. Got some folks up on the reservation keeping an eye out for some. If they come through with more than I want, i'll give you a jingle & see if you want any. Will be getting loads of joint size, just tough finding butt size.

Tell him to use 5-minute epoxy and use that saved time to round up antlers.

my last effort
the guy said it was straight

1st pic > looks like it's got potential for a handle
2nd pic > not so much potential :frown:
although that curved part near my hand does fit my hand very well

been holding out huh? :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

LOL No. I usually don't mess with elk. These were dropped off here by a guy who does medical supply deliveries. He got them from somebody who had them on their porch, and thought of me. I was gonna make a lamp from them or use them as legs under a slab for a rustic table. But if you want them, they're yours. If you want, I can get you some big ones. Mine are huge compared to most elk but for this part of the country they are just so so. Some get HUGE. I can get them like mine all day any day. Every little rustic furnishing store or junk store has piles of them for sale. Next time i'm up in the mountains i'll get a price recon for you. Each antler will have at least a handle or forearm, plenty of butt caps & countless joints. Heck, between the two I have combined, I could get probably 50 1" butt caps and 100 joint collars. Lots of bright white mixed with gray & tan, unlike the typical elk that have mostly a gray/brown.

LOL That's a small fry. You want pics of my antlers? From the brow tine to the first aft tine is 13" on one & measures 1.8" at the narrow, and the other has about 16" of straight area that measures 1.8" at the narrow. They taper very little if at all between tines. The big ones have 15-20" of straight antler between the tines and probably closer to 2.5-3". And no exaggeration, folks have literally piles of them for sale. Actually, come to think of it, there's a place that uses them for rustic lighting and they have antler sections for sale, cut-offs from the projects they work on. I'll check them out & see if they have any large pieces. If I had known you wanted elk antler, I could have brought you a load when I was up north last year.

the problem with the BIG ones, is when turned, all that's left is the marrow
it's a guessing game
the one pictured is just such as i said, the outer bone is almost completely gone and it's at 1.75" right now

Have you considered having them impregnated like the burl woods? The marrow was there for blood flow, so it will naturally will make it easy for resin to flow into the porous areas.

never looked into that,
but it would probably work
