Delusional Poolplayers

How do you deal with delusional poolplayers?

You mean like the guy who drew Efren in an open tournament, who turned to Efren & said: "I gotta warn you...I'm an APA five!"

No delusional in me...I know I'm a poor player.

that didn't really happen did it?? LOL!

Players like that used to make good ATM's:thumbup:

I sort of epitomize the "anti-delusional" pool player. I know how poor I play in comparison to the people that can really play. Sometimes I do kinda wonder why some people think they are good players then I realize that in their pool they are the big fish, and they are content with that. When guppies start venturing into deeper waters they usually realize they are bait.

The other ones I just kick in the taint.....

I choose option 5:

Agree with them all the time so it's easier talking them into giving you weight.

I must admit there was no button that represents my point of view on the subject.

What do I do with people who think they play better than they actually play? I lure them into gambling against me.

Basically I try all of these with "The" guy at my local poolroom...

I talk until I am blue in the face and reality won't sink in.... at which point I simply walk away and realize I just can't get far enough away...

I go home to watch Idol only to really get pissed about the fact that I am over 40 now and there is noooooo way I can kick MYSELF in the taint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG....Tell me this is a true story....He should be banned from pool for life....clown..

Pool players

Most Pool players are somewhat deluded about their game. Some just a bit, and some a lot more. They think when they can run a table without too much of a problem that they are good, and they might be for a B player.

But, there are little things like banking (up to 4 rails), kicking, breaking, safety play, and being able to break up clusters of balls that separate the players from the 'open table' players.

Most of the deluded players just need to play on a bigger stage, and that will bring them back to reality.

Perfect example of this phenomena is MARTY HERMAN on any chat in USTREAM or in real life for that matter.

Every pro player is his best-est friend forever.
He taught every pro pool player in existence how to play.
He can beat every person in chat at both 3 cushion and pool, and i quote,"Is there anyone in here stupid enough to gamble with me?" Which he will eventually ask if you let him go off and pump himself up to that level without cutting him down a few times before hand.
Anyone who doubts him or questions him is "SCUM, or CANCER"

And this is just an aside, He sold a southwest to every pool player that has ever owned one.

PERFECT EXAMPLE of a DELUSIONAL POOL PLAYER!

I know a delusional pool player when i see one!!!
THAT WAS GREAT TO FUNNY

The problem is "good" is purely subjective. Most people use their own skill level to measure another player's. For example: If somebody is better than you, you think they are a "good" player. But if they play worse than you, you think they are a banger. Somebody may be a great player to you, but there are people who would consider that person a poor player.

I'll get to the point quickly. Even though I would be considered a beginner to 90% of the people on this forum....I have family and friends over to the house all the time (who have little exposure to pool mind you) who all think I'm the greatest player they have ever seen. It is misconceptions such as these that are planted into one's mind, and those who are not sharp enough to realize the subjectiveness of the situation carry this mentality into the pool room. The result......lots of delusional pool players.

That's my theory anyway.

Rob them and claim you was lucky. Buy them a beer and suggest a rematch some days later ... and ... repeat

In the town where my dad now lives there is a guy who in all honesty is a fairly good player on a barbox anyway ive never seen him on a 9ft. but when we first showed up there to their weekly tournament my dad and i both toasted him with relative ease and thought nothing of it, then people start coming up to us asking how long we have been on the pro tour and how we got so good and bla bla bla. so we ask what they are talking about and come to find out he had them all convinced he was on the pro tour and quit because it was too EASY for him....needless to say we about busted our guts laughing and it took us a couple weeks of beating him to finally get them to realize he had them all fooled...the best part is once they realized this and werent so intimidated every single player there jumped at least an entire level in their game which i liked seeing because now this guy might win once every couple of months...he is definatly the most delusional player i have ever seen

If you can get them to gamble, most won't in my experience. And second, hope they've got some $$$, they usually don't have that either.

I think the term that should be used here is resolution of dissonance: I have to explain to myself (and others) why I have spent so much time and money and cannot shoot up to my own expectations.

Same as the guy who spent XX thousands of dollars or a car or home. He has to “justify” his efforts and the justifications can at times get surreal.

Figure out how this works and you can make lots of money.

I just tell everyone I know they play better than me and then ask for weight.Sometimes they will do a aboutface and shut up.

Not any that I know of at the hall but the bar that sponsors our team has one. He is a hoot. I get him going some nights and just about piss myself at the BS that comes out of his mouth.

1. We were talking about Hueblers one night and he said, I play with one. I asked him if I could see it and when he pulled it out, I looked down at the logo. It said Players.

2. I over heard him telling a team he was sparing in for one night that he has his cue tips custom made for him. They take 6 months to make and cost him $300 a piece. Now, this one I could barely keep from slapping him.

3. He recently started using a Predator sneaky. He told me that he bought 2 of them at a pawn shop for cheap and that they were worth $1200.00 a piece.

4. He gambles on the bar table at our home bar and makes obscene amounts of money. For instance, he plays some guys for $100 a ball.

5. He doesn't go to the pool hall because its boring, as in no competition.
He has beaten everyone including all the masters that play there.

6. He has played Earl Strickland and beat him. I wouldn't know where this might have happened. I doubt he travels much further than from his house to the bar.

Its fun. One night I showed him my Lizard GTF case and told him it was a rare Fellini case and worth $2000 just to get him going. Its all one up man ship. Once you start there is no telling whats going to come out of his mouth.
My old lady just looks at me and shakes her head. Yer a mean bastard she says.

At least he got the last three letters right on the brand name. :D

Why is it ...

That AZ is full of A players; but the pool room isn't?
Coincidental or delusional ......

I don't know????

The poolhalls I go to have lots of A players, but they're usually the same players making the rounds to the various pool halls and we all know each other.

Also, I'm one of those delusional players, so if any of you play me remember to give me two balls more than I'm asking cause it's unfair otherwise....
