I have a similar controller and i thought it went bad. I replaced the controller, and it worked a while, then it started messing up again. Turned out the brushes were worn down. I turned em 180 degrees and its worked ever since. Just a thought.

penn state actually will sell you just the controller. It's 54.00 shipped
I had that controller go bad and Chris suggested I buy his controller that he builds. About $100 and he can talk you how to fix it with local parts if it fails. The advantages to his controller far out way the disadvantages.

As a tip, I had one of mine do that and it turned out that the on/off switch arced and smoked then said goodbye. I had another switch hanging around(I don't throw much electrical stuff out unless toast) and swapped it. You can tell if you take the switch out and smell it, it'll smell burnt. They are really cheaply designed switches. I have changed my two Penn motors, my bandsaw, and one of my bench saws so far, all due to similar failures.

On the subject of switches going bad,my Enco mini lathe used to have a problem burning up on/off switches. I bypassed it eventually. The on/off is now the potentiometer/speed control.
On my Chinese wood lathe,the switch went bad within a month. I replaced it with a simple light switch like we all have in our walls. No problems since. Tommy D.

This past weekend I just hooked up a momentary contact footpedal on my deluxe so I just remove my foot and the lathe and router, if I'm using it, and anything else plugged into it will shutoff immediately. I think they call it the deadman's switch? I used it yesterday and it's pretty nice to be able to start/stop everything in one shot, not to mention it saves on the wear and tear on the on/off switches.
