Derby Action

It seems over the last few years that the big match-ups have sort of dried up. It's basically down to the Dominican guys playing gaff games with everyone. Any thoughts on why this has happened?

last year was all guama and reyito, is it the same this year? only watched one gambling stream, reyito vs chohan 1p with a substantial spot. reyito won.

Its in a casino, to easy to play cards, slots sports bet..., Its hard to watch the Action with this setup..., Maybe its time to move the event south to better weather and closer to more people who might show up to bet or back.

The casino is probably a huge part of the action dying down. At the old venue it was literally non stop action for all skill levels and some massive sets took place.

I won’t make it to DCC, until Tuesday so I’m not sure about this years action. However, the best action used to happen in the “Practice Room/Green Room”. It mostly ended when they started to schedule matches on those tables.

The match ups there were far more entertaining than the arranged big dollar stuff between pros. I’ve personally observed hustlers teaming up to control the whole room. Incredible thing to watch. The last couple of years that has changed. I anticipate Deathball will still be there working up $100 1-pkt racks and a few loudmouths will be there, playing 9-ball, on the only barbox. Otherwise, the tournament will be using all the “fun” tables.

I love DCC but miss the constant, impromptu matchups of the practice room.

Here and can verify that if you're not playing Guama or Reyito you're likely not betting enough to win dinner. A few exceptions like Mickey v Shane W 1 ball 1pkt. I gotta be honest, pretty tired of watching that game too.

It’s because the mgmt keeps adding side events and players. There are no tables or time left for action.
No... It's not. It's due to the tournament being hosted at a casino. A ton of the pool players have gambling addictions as it is, and it's just too easy to go and get your fix at the casino, as opposed to woofing and getting side action... All the free mo ey gets soaked up very quickly in the casino. Action was absolutely nuts in the Executive West days, as there was nowhere else to gamble. People would "pump up" for months to have a nice little stake to gamble with, and the other problem gamblers would be forced into a game if they wanted their fix, so it kept a constant flow of lower level games going, and eventually, some of that money would consolidate into bigger matches.

Fargorate also likely plays a part, as confidence in the rating is going up, and it's pretty easy to clock who you have no chance against without a big spot. This was not really a thing back in Executive West days yet.

Do it close to the Gulf.... not in a casino.
Most important thing to consider Before picking the venue location.

Have a major airport close by that has an Airport $huttle to/from the hotel area, somewhere along Interstate 10 e. of TX.
No rental cars needed, no player pickup going on at the airport.
AL$O.... hotel room costs.

Some states/cities are ju$t too much) for our demographic.
Two players $150 total per night MAX, works, not $239. + a player special with only $15 extra per player per DAY, UGH.
Gulf costal towns have great sea food, better than Indiana in the winter. :)
I'd say, anywhere but FLA, too expensive there in winter.

totally agree on the casino angle. it killed a LOT of the side action. when i went in '07 at the EI it was like a gambling carnival with pool, dice, three card monte, cards and roulette upstairs and the guy that had the gaff game where he tossed the CB three rails and bet he could make all the balls in his pocket in so many throws. All kinds of crazy shit. And don't get me started on the Superfly dressed pimp from Gary Indiana with his mini-stable of premium tail for rent. It was a crazy scene and i fkng loved it. Current version is a little too watered down PG-rated shit these days.

Gulf locations have a fundamental issue when it comes to economics -- the size of their trade areas. For instance, Biloxi's is 180 degrees while Tunica's is 360 degrees. No one comes here from the south to gamble, or do business, because there is nobody south of us except dolphins and seagulls. Simple geography is the reason a cotton field like Tunica can compete with a "Riviera of America" like Biloxi.

This means very little to consumers except that our choices are somewhat limited, but a limited market means everything to an entrepreneur who is trying to get something going. Why would anyone want to limit the area from which he can draw? I realize this had greater impact in the horse and buggy days before airplanes and Amazon, but it still has a great impact on all drive-in markets.

I have very mixed emotions about the current DCC, because I am the raving pool fan who would have happily driven the 800 miles north to walk into the Executive West, but I won't go around the block to be mistreated. And, friends, ya'll can all kid yourselves all you want, but we are being sorely mistreated in Indiana -- it is a "take everything give nothing" form of hospitality that succeeds only because of the rarity of the product purveyed.

I had originally rationalized that Diamond had inadvertently stumbled into a bad place, was forced into a bad spot, and eventually get things straight. After all these years, however, it is apparent to me that this is it, this is the plan. It is, as we say here, a "Hooray for me, and &#(@ you" proposition because it is Diamond's deck and Diamond is dealing, but old BB has never played that game from either side of the table.

And, oh, if you wonder how we ever got anywhere down here with our geographic limitations, it was treating folks right and giving them what they wanted or needed.
