DERBY CITY CLASSIC THOUGHTS, Jan 23-31.

I am "supposed" to be able to share a room with a friend who has already made reservations, if I make the trip. I may wind up in the room by the pool (the cabinet in the AZ Room where another former marine spent a couple of nights) I think his name was something like "goingproin07". He was a bit smaller than I am but marines are taught to adapt. :D

I can vouch for Russ being a nice and funny guy to hang around with at the DCC but I don't know about the snoring part and would just take his word for that.

Is anyone going to play in the banks? I've been practicing my banks and it has been fun learning to bank a little better.
JoeyA

JoeyA... I been hitting a few balls, so instead of 9-6 and the breaks, I'll just take 9-7 my break, 9-6 yours.

:D :D :D

Christmas has busted me, but I would love to go. Right now my fiancee' and I are paying two mortgages and Christmas broke me.

It would be pretty sweet if Harrah's decided to host big tournaments at more of their casinos. I'm about 2 hours away from the one in Cherokee, NC which would be nice.

It's really simple:

If you love pool -- you must go.

The DCC is the biggest and bestest three-ring circus in pool and you'll kick yourself if you don't go (especially if this turns out to be the last one... and you missed it.)

This is the Johnston City of our era.

The very worst case is, that it'll be a little scaled down in terms of attendance, to where it was a few year ago. In a lot of ways, that's good thing. It means more tables available; shorter waiting times for matches to be drawn and called; more practice time to get used to the frippin' short banks; AND more tables to match up on.

For future years, the casino and Harrah's are going to do whatever they're going to do. And while I'm all for supporting the sport and Greg & Co., the real bottom line is: do it for yourself. It's a great time with something for everyone -- no two people have the same DCC experience: tournament play; sweating unbelievable matches; woofing; gambling; 1pocket and 14.1 challenges; cue sticks and gimcracks galore; seeing friends from all over the country; the HOF dinner; legends walking around left and right; pool everywhere you look. So do yourself a favor and go for a weekend, an event, or the whole shebang.

You won't regret it.

Lou Figueroa
Lou, I agree nearly 100% -- but to fine-tune your comparison, maybe the last ten DCC's were like the Johnston City of our time, while this coming one is the "Stardust" :D

Maybe

I read your post and you have a lot of good points. but they are all true poviding that it goes well. I went last year for the first time and thought it was a poor venue that the amiture players were at a different location. I am looking at it from a vendors point of veiw. They are the ones that spend money. The pros don't spend money. They don't have a job, let alone money to spend on pool items. I think a casino could be worse. People don't spend any money on pool related items and blow it in the casinos. This happened in Iowa when they moved the state tournament to a casino area. It isn't held at the casino, but it is walking distance from it. Our sales have been less than half ever since. We can only hope that they don't hurt it by making the move. I wish I would have went before just to see how it was. I have always been told that this was the best of the year. Hopefully it will be. Butterflycues

We can always make room for another poolandpokerman.

If someone wants to share a room for the entire event, I will consider going, even if I sleep on an air mattress or futon. I really feel like playing this year, and have been practicing a bit. If anyone needs a roommate at a reasonable price, PM me.

Russ

P.S., I don't snore. :D

Me too on this one. I am available for the duration and let WBM in the other DCC thread I am available to volunteer for whatever, whenever. Maybe I should let Gregg know too, even though they are probably squared away.

Hey Don,

Not sure if you remember me but this is Cliff from CT and I'm trying to talk Bob K into making the trip. Hope to see you and maybe this year we can make a deal on a cue as well.

You also have the old man from California willing to help pay for your trip. After the spread you laid down in Gulfport (even), I know you are planning to take me off the next time we meet.

The winner of our match should be the one who gets to play Roy first, but I'm starting to suspect he is not the Nordic Fish he wants us to believe he is.

And as another sign of my benevolence, I'm going to let you play Chicago Mike first.

All of the above should help pay for a few more days stay at the Derby. John

John,

I'm sure Joey appreciates your benevolence, but it doesn't sound like I can expect any good fortune from Joey...After the way he tuned me up in the Gulfport tourney I'm not so sure I'm very anxious to go at him.

Let me put it like this...Chicago style 1p has got nothin' on Joey. Trying to get him to give up a shot is like trying to squeeze water from a rock...and I was real thirsty that day! He was squeezing so hard he was poopin' diamonds...You know what I mean????

Anyway, if I gotta go thru Joey to get to you I may have to tempt fate a little...Remember what we say in one pocket,"You gotta weigh the risk/ reward factor". If Joeys the risk and you're the reward...Well, I may have to take my chances.:D

Hi Lou,

Sounds like you have all the bases covered as far as reasons to be there. I second your description of the event and all your reasons for going.

Sounds like you will be in attendance. Hope to see you there!
