Design Ideas For My New Cue

Alright folks,

Hopefully, when I get home today, I'll be finding my John Davis full splice blank waiting for me.

Now I want to keep this cue relatively simple, but I'd like to know what you guys would do to finish the cue off. All I've decided so far is that the joint will be phenolic sleeved with stainless and a radial pin.

The blank is ebony into straight maple with white, black, red, black veneers inside to outside, much like a recent Mottey posted here.

My only thought so far was a veneered MOP wedge butt. What do you guys think? Remember, classic simplicity is the key here.

Thanks.

is the Ebony Full length or will it have to have a wrap to cover the handlewood? The pictures posted here by Tate show the handle wood is not ebony. Thanks in advance....

Ian

It will be wrapped

The handle is not full length ebony, it is spliced with straight grain maple. Though I like the idea of the exposed butterfly splices where the handle and the front join, I think the straight maple handle would be a bit to plain looking. So it will have a wrap, probably black leather.

Maybe Not

The only kind of DP this thing would get involved in would require a serious sanitizing afterwards.

I really like the veneered wedge butt idea. At the cue show in Las Vegas, someone had a cue with a really good looking veneered ivory wedge. If you did that, though, the joint should be ivory too. An ivory sleeved joint is very durable - that's what my JW has and I've had no problems with it. The ivory wedge makes the veneers stand out better than pearl, although pearl has a mirrored, cloud-like like look that I really like too. You would have to see the ivory wedge to appreciate it, but it's a very subtle, very classy look. So if you were to go with a black butt, you could go with the reverse veneer colors.

I'll post up some pics of a wedge butt Palmer I just picked up - I think you'll like it. Also, the Model H Palmer I have was at the show, and a number of people commented that it was once of the prettiest cues although it is very simple.

Here's the H Butt:

Here's the other one. Both cues are have the classic "classy" look. Although I would not like to see them copied everywhere I look, it's a theme I've always liked. I also have a Brunswick 26 1/2 from about 1910 - 1915 that has a similar butt. The Brunswick's wrap usually ended before the pearl, but this leaves a weak sharp point that need to be protected or it will break off (protected by being slightly lower than the surrounding wood). The veneers on this cue are vinyl, which match the forearm.

Maybe with a twist

I need to check with my cuemaker, but I wonder if it would be possible to have stacked veneer rings at the top and bottom of the buttsleeve that are mitered into the veneers around the wedge. If he says he can do it, I think I may go in that direction.

Ebony Butt, maple windows, same veneers around the windows.

That's a very interesting idea. It would take some careful planning, but I think it's do-able.

I was also wondeing how a band of small alternating diamonds and dots would look in silver against black rings if the wedge is MOP, or in ivory if you went the ivory route.

This is where these CAD programs are so useful.

Hi Chris,

The ivory wedge with veneers makes a nice cue. That was my ivory wedge at the ICCS show in Las Vegas. It was a wrapless brazilian rosewood cue with ivory wedge and joint, made for a great player, Marvin Henderson in 1964. The veneers are Ginacue classic green and orange.

Take care,

Will

I drew up some pics of the mitered veneers around the wenge. Dont know if its possible, but maybe you could try to have a hoppe ring and wedge made together out of a solid piece of ivory...might be pretty cool.
Def needs an ivory joint, maybe black/red/black veneer trim rings.
