Diamond Billiards Takes a Sabbatical

I was in Dallas and worked at Diamonds for a couple of months. Things just didn't go according to plans and I had no choice but, move on. That's life.

They want this place to fourish and be the type place everyone wants to play. Sure, even ownership likes to gamble at the game, but, they are not putting pressure on anyone to come in and gamble on their nice equipment. They want to see everyone their and enjoying themselves.

Billy and Jeff are good businessmen and true enough may have planned a bit from the heart, but really believed there was a market for what was proposed. Sometimes things just don't work out according tto the way they were written.

I congratulate them on a bold initiative and hope they cn rebound and come up with a plan to turn this into a profitable venture. The place is so nice, it seems a shame to see it close.

I wish them well.

FWIW, while I was there, it was a very friendly place. I never saw any hard hustling going on. The ones who gamble, gambled among themselves.

I agree

I agree. I passed through twice on a short visit to Dallas and didn't feel any pressure at all about gambling. Gambling is just the only way I could see the place have a real hope of making money and I would have liked to have gambled in that environment. I hate constant interruptions and distractions when playing seriously and Diamonds is absolutely the perfect place for a little quiet competition, money changing hands or not.

Unfortunately the things that I can think of that might make it profitable would mean it wasn't the Diamonds I so liked anymore. I don't really think it would fly but making it a high dollar private club with guests paying a substantial fee might work. Hopefully they can figure out something to keep the place much the same and make a buck too.

My cousin said it best: To make it in a bar or pool hall operation it has to be a dive with used coin operated equipment and big tits serving beer and frozen pizza.

I wonder how grady's new place is doing????

Unfortunately I think that pretty much nails it. My local guy was counting the months left on a two year lease before the first year was out trying to make it largely on pool. Another local owner is struggling too. Buffalo seems to have survived his post Katrina move in great shape but he is the exception to the rule and I think being in business forever and being a stand-up guy are the only reasons he does good.

Jamie farrel does okay as far as I can tell. He has had to branch out and hustle pizza, but the place owns him as much as he owns it. Cue and cushion doesn't have much overhead and makes money on beer and video poker. Years ago the owner of pickles had almost naked women serving drinks. He was boning one of them and his old lady put a bullet in him for it. One of the guys who went in on buffulos was a river boat pilot who has a ton of cash with or without making money from table time or anything else. I heard there was some solid action going on in buffulos after katrina, that must have settled down by now. Dunno... don't get to got there very often.

Grady has mentioned lately that he is doing ok, but the town has now hit him with the sprinkler system code deal, to the tune of about $30,000. ouuuuuuch!

rumors

I heard that Jamie sold the pizza business although it is still there. No idea if that is accurate info, secondhand. Still action to be had at Buff's, large or small. I doubt the pick'ns are quite as easy as they were reputed to be shortly after Katrina when there was a lot of easy money in town though.

I haven't been getting out much myself and it looks like I'll be getting out less in the coming months. By the time I make it back to the pool hall I'll probably have to draw an arrow towards the pointy end of my stick to remember which end to shoot with.

Yes, Corner Pocket in Kenner sold the pizza business. They seem to be doing fine without it. They've also re-started the B/C tournaments on the 4th Sat. of each month. They've taken out the bar boxes and put in an additional 2 GCs, so now there are ten 9-footers, and one 8-footer.

Buffalos in Metairie remains the premiere room. There is frequent small to medium action, which can break out at any time. When Humphrey (Gerald Huber, author of The Green Felt Jungle fires back up, then all the action escalates as well. They have a good money added tournament on the 2nd Sat. of every other month (next one 12/8). The equipment at Buffalos is top notch. Twelve 9-foot Diamonds, one GC4, and two or three bar boxes. All in excellent condition.

Both places have good bars. And I think both benefit very nicely from the video poker machines. The juke box at Buffalos is very player friendly: soft, or off!

I think Grady subscribes to the 'other' saying, "something Old, something New.....something Borrowed, something BLUE."
