Did I Play This Wrong?

was practicing some tonight, and ended up with this layout on the final four balls. i reasoned that i could go around three rails to get shape on the 6-Ball, but with the 6-Ball sitting very near the pocket i saw no reason to try and do that.

so, i hit the shot with just a little inside english to hold it as best i could. i was left with a slightly longer shot, but again, the 6-Ball was very close to the pocket. and just about any shot on the 6-Ball would give you natural angle for the 7-Ball into the side.

oh, and yes, i did finish them out, but i am just wondering if you posters would have went ahead and went three rails to try and get closer to the 6-Ball just to be have a little better shot? this is a pretty easy out, but i am wondering what you posters would have done?

i think it depends on the table. with faster cloth & tighter pockets i would have gone around the table. with tighter pockets you have to hit the 6 ball too thin and end up having to take the around the table to get to the 7. hay gettin out's gettin out

Me too! Nothing in the way and an easy shot to go three rails back to the center of the table.

After finishing, I would think about how I got on the wrong side of the 5 to begin with.

Can you explain me what kind of shot (english, draw, follow) you would use. And what rail you want to kick?

5 ball in the side with top right. Or even with just center right.

I've seen Corey draw the cueball off the 5 ball to the short rail with bottom right on these types of position.

True, but given the 6 is easy, I think still the normal 3 safer..Corey is pretty well known for his stuns and draws..

Absolutely

Yes, I would have gone around because:

A) Of where the 7 was sitting and the angle to put it into the side, although
you could always play the 7 into the bottom corner.

B) I might have shot the 5 with low left english pulling it, to just go 2 rails with the cue ball coming up into the center of the table. Why? Because going 3 rails, when you come off the 3rd rail you are going away from the 6 angle (meaning you will have a thinner cut on it) than the 2 rail shot where you are coming into the 6 angle (meaning a straighter shot), and more control of the cue ball to get shape on the 7.

Mike,

You can play this shot a number of ways. Personally, this is how I might have played it... look at this and then scroll to page two and see what my options are when I get there on the 6...

once I get on the 6... I have a few options on what I want to do with the 7 ball. From here, I will have pocket on the 7 if I come up long, AND if I come up short. In your scenario, you might get left with a bank or a tough cut if you come up short on position for the 7. I'm not saying that what you did was incorrect, I'm just saying that you should look for position that will afford you more than one pocket option for the next object ball. The way that you played it, you really only have one pocket (maybe 2) to play for on the 7. By going down to that bottom rail, you can play for the seven in just about any pocket and still have easy position on the 9 ball.

Note: I didn't read other responses, this may have been said already...

On a 7 or 8 footer with slow cloth, your shot is fine...you can pocket the ball, making sure to come off the rail enough to have a good shot on the 6.....on a 9 footer, especially a quicker table, I'd opt for 3 rails to get closer to the 6 and maintain more control....

I'm not sure 4 hangers justifies it's own post. This is a D- layout that can be run at least a dozen ways.

IMO, if I was having problems getting out of a wet paper bag (or even questioning my ability to do so), it would be time to switch to ping pong or checkers.

It's worth discussing I think because there's an important lesson somewhere in here... something that basically boils down to: getting closer and easier on the object ball means you can get more perfect on the next ball.

This is especially important with actual hangers because how thick or thin you hit those balls makes a world of difference in the outcome. You can see and control the thickness of the hit much better from 2 feet away vs. 6.

Failing to go 3 rails is a bit timid, there's no reason NOT to do it unless you don't know where the CB is going to go or how to control its path.

TAP TAP TAP.
And sometimes, you may have poor cueball control or the table is rolling funny and rather just be a shot maker instead of counting on english and cueball roll. I have seen some people that are great shot makers but poor cueball control and vise verses. It's nice to know when to say when even if it takes a lil more work to get the out.

9 out of 10 times, I would have played 3 rails though.

DCP or 007, U R killing this forum with UR posts!!!!!!

DCP.....you do realize that not EVERYONE gets perfect postion all the time and shots like this are normal in order to run out??? You just do what you need to do sometimes and live with it. Work on getting better position so shots like this become less frequent. I just personally don't see the reasoning of posting basic outs like this one?? Maybe its just me....

I'd go 3 rail long like this by drawing the CB just a little. If the CB ended up anywhere in the green zone it would be okay.

zzz I wish apa7 would shut up with the "killing this forum" crap. The stuff DCP posts is part of what the forum is about. Did he expect to not find questions about how to play pool? And why does he keep clicking on dcp's threads when he knows what he'll find there? Someone who goes out of their way just to bash these innocent (and sometimes useful) questions is the kind of person who can kill a forum.

I would go three rails with right hand english. I think that is an easier shot to make and play position than to play inside english. There is a large margin of error that will still allow a shot on the 6 and position on the 7. The inside english shot can leave you no good 6 shot if hit too soft, and a longer shot if hit too hard.
I think some people shy away from a shot that requires the CB to travel a little bit. In this case, it actually allows you to let your stroke out a little more than if you play the inside english.
