Did Nick Varner Gamble well or high?

Over the years, I've posted that Nick Varner is the ONLY man who has won World Championships in all 5 disciplines...World 14.1, World 8 Ball, World 9 Ball, World Banks Champion and World 1 Pocket Champion. Throw in him being the only man to ever win the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship in consecutive years and a slew of other titles and it's easy to see he is an all time great champion. I've called and e-mailed Billiard Digest and Pool & Billiard magazine several times over the years, as well as spoken to Mike Panozzo & Mason King at VF about them doing a feature story on Nick Varner.
His tenacity is best sumed up by what Freddie Bentivegna reminded us... One of his backers, Hubert Cokes, called him..."The little gorilla." Varner is a dangerous guy on the table, a gem off of it.

Well I'll say this. I do have them on my "sheet of integrity" beating Arizona in the first round.

Danny knew that if he went into the bathroom, Hubert would certainly have something with him. Danny knew that Hubert carried THREE pistols on him at all times. One in his ankle holster, one in his pocket, and one spring action derringer strapped to his wrist. Danny was plenty tough, but Hubert was one of the baddest men of the first 50 years of the 20th century. Fat's classic line was that Hubert once b_tch-slapped Babyface Nelson.

not a gambling story but...

A lot of you probably know this story and know the details. I read somewhere that Nick was playing a match in a tournament (or practicing?) when some cops come in the place and proceed to arrest a fellow or two at the table next to the table Nick is playing on. Nick was so focused he never knew what was going on next to him, just kept playing.

After watching him play one time I had to go out and buy some chewing game. :p

Hubert Cokes may have been a respectable buisness man but when it came to gambling he was one of the guys that you watch your P's and Q's with. My grandfather's generation referred to him as Mr. Cokes. At the old Hustler jamborees there were guys who were stone killers Daddy Warbucks, Titanic Thompson, etc. Hubert Cokes had a body guard that went everywhere with him not so much to protect him as to protect other guys from taking one between the eyes. Hubert Cokes was known as a no nonsense type of guy. If he felt like you were apt to be crazy or confrontational he was not afraid of anyone and just may make you wish you thought before you spoke or acted.

Nick Varner is always one of the players I've admired most. Guys that play ALL games at such a high level as Nick have always been something special in my opinion. Nick Varner is a former World Champion 14.1 player as well as being a champion in 1p and 9 ball. Also, I've never met the man, but I get the feeling he's a truly nice person to be around. This is all despite the fact that he went to that school in West Lafayette, IN which shall remain nameless ;)

I have to agree with you, I look at Nicky as the Efren of our generation, a great all around player/gambler/person and he is what he is. Always the same guy, what you see is what you get. Makes you wonder how well he plays three cushion.

Varner ~1976

Nick came to our university around 1976 for an exhibition. Afterwards, he had a sandwich and beer with a few of us. Naturally, we got around to asking him the largest $ he had ever played for. He said...it was just a few weeks ago. He played someone in Lexington (?) for $2K/game/one pocket. I am pretty sure that Nick had to spot something and lost quite a bit. Maybe Nick will remember.

He was the most gracious professional pool player I had (and still have) ever met.
