Dilemma...opinions welcome.

I think I would almost prefer to have it in the shop, provided there was a fridge, a radio and basic human comforts. It would be less distracting I think. I had a friend who had his table set up in a detached garage man cave type set up which was pretty awesome. The only thing I would worry about is if you were working with wood and the saw dust affects the table.

Oh yeah,"the fridge" always has plenty of drinks and food in it too. Yep got the radio covered, even have nice chairs and some stools. The dust won't be a problem.I clean up as soon as I get done working on something. What else? Thanks, JB

That's the first thing I thought of,lol. I will have the best table cover $ can buy. Thanks,JB

You'll need it.

I have a similar situation. Woodworking shop takes up most of the basement, but you'd never know it. Here's some pics from when we first moved in, and how I have it now. Cost me several grand, but I got three of those poles moved out and a steel beam in their place, and the rest of it looking pretty good IMO.

Behind the curtains to the right is where the shop is. I have expensive dust collection for all my power tools, and an overhead air filtration unit. Still, the fine dust finds its way past the curtains and onto the table. I can only play for a little while several times a day because of my back, so I leave the table uncovered unless I'm actively working in the shop because I want easy accessibility when I'm feeling up to it. It works OK, but only because of the curtains and the dust management practices I use, as well as regular brushing and vacuuming of the cloth.

As far as how it looks to others, who cares? How you feel about the space is what matters. Anybody booking lessons from you knows what they are there for - a session with a banks champion. If they don't like it, they can go find another banks champion to teach them for $50/hour. I'll tell you, if you were 800 miles closer it wouldn't bother me in the least what the place looked like, I'd be booking some lessons with you.

I put mine in the garage!

Of course, I petitioned a wall and insulated the heck out of it. I'll post a pic if I can find it!

I don't know about you guys, but I don't like tables surrounded by garage clutter. A finished garage is different.

My table is pretty nice. It's the TV table from the 2010 DCC. The jet black one:)
Thanks for all the good advice and ideas so far. Keep em coming,I'm taking votes:wink: John B.

John, I used to worry about image when I became a Realtor. You know the type -> Realtor wearing nice clothes, driving a Lexus, hanging out in the ritz, etc. Well I did ok, but once I went through the downturn in Real Estate, started wearing blue jeans, drove an older (but clean) car and hung out where my normal friends hang out. I just focused on being myself and providing great customer service and MY BUSINESS SOARED.

So my lesson too you is put the pool room in the shop, keep the shop nice and clean, be yourself and you will be fine as long as you give great customer service. Good Luck, wish I could take a lesson from you.....

Thanks for the wisdom! JB

Down to brass tacks... If you, a professional player, can work out on the table - comfortably, unimpeded, in such a way as is seriously required to meet your needs - then I don't think any students will have anything to be disappointed about. I have to expect that you'd be the 1st in line to have high expectations for your own equipment and atmosphere. If where ever you put the table provides that environment, you gotta be good to go.

John, I would say the shop, put down the rubber like I have for flooring, cheaper than carpet and a lot easier on the legs. Also easier to clean and you can take it up if you need to.
You would need to heat and AC, insulate and drywall or sheet the walls. The only other thing is the ceiling, if I remember it is open to the rafters, might need to do something with that to keep the heat and ac in.

Thanks and yes that is where I would do all my own practice.I would not even think about putting it in my shop if I was worried that it might effect how my table plays. Thanks again for the thoughts!! .JB

Is this a garage for a Barbie car? :grin-square:

Thanks in advance.

Here's my dilemma,I will be moving into another house within the next year or so. (my old "homestead" where I grew up). So that means I have to move my pool table. Well I have a room in the house that has plenty of room for it but it is right in the middle of the floor. It's a big old farm house that I'm having remodeled. (No basement).

I really don't want to take up the nice big room right in the middle of my house with my pool table where I might be doing lessons and playing and maybe gettin a lil loud with my buds while my wife is tryin to watch tv. Ya know, stuff like that:D

Or I could put it in my shop.
So now about my shop conditions... My shop has a concrete floor with a few cracks but it's pretty level.I could put down some carpet just around the table. I know I will have to have it insulated real good and or better than it is.And I would. I have a gas furnace that warms it good and fast.

I should say that my shop was built for wood working and has alot of wood working tools, drill press, band saw, table saw, lathe, belt sander ect ect. However they would not be in the way at all.

So here's my main question...lets just say that you could take a pool lesson from whoever you want to name. but you would have to pay oh say 200$ for 4 hours.Would you do it in this shop?.

I hope to get a lot of opinions and advice. Thanks for your time. John B. PS: Shannon Daulton has been to my house and shop a bunch of times. He told me to put it in my shop.

John, people will come to you for lessons wherever you are and whatever the conditions. It doesn't have to be plush. I only would suggest you carpet the entire room. It will make it warmer and so much more comfortable. Oh and make sure your furnace is vented.

Thanks Jay for the advice. I'm thinking very serious about doing it. JB

Put it in a tree house for all anyone cares. Quality is name of the game, and I am certain you provide that. PS. I think the tree house table room would be pretty awesome!

i havent read every post in this thread........:embarrassed2:
just so you know who i am i enjoyed having dinner with you at tunica (first year)..
to have a lesson with you
as long as the temperature was comfortable
and the table played true
id take a lesson with you in the middle of-the Sahara desert or at the north pole
p.s. i hope to be up to see you this summer

Well, having actually been to your shop, I absolutely think you should set up the table there, so I do agree with Shannon D about that. I would also consider applying a floor coating like rustoleum's epoxy shield. That cuts down on dust and you can also soften the feel of the space by choosing a warm color (yes, that is my wife's thinking on the color part). I used that on my basement floor if you recall.

Or put it in the house if your wife would not mind ( but mine would).

Cheers,
JL

Carpet is a good idea, but you don't need it in the whole shop. Maybe just around the pool table or maybe some inexpensive throw rugs. I know that I cring every time those high end aramith balls rocket off my table onto the hard concrete below.

And please keep the ping pong table.

Thanks alot Lar:wink:. If you come up this summer my table will still be in my basement
where it is now. Hope to see ya again. Can't believe you won't come to the dcc and cool off:D JB

Would you do it in this shop?.

Would take a quality lesson in Macy's window. Seriously...Yes. Shop would be fine.

My Pa house has a table in the basement. The Florida house has one big main room that would accommodate a table but my wife would toss me and the table out from the noise. I understand your situation. On a side note if my wife took my table and left I'd miss that GoldCrown.
