Do Chinese Made Pool Products Also Contain Lead?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled more than 300,000 Chinese made toys & other children's products Wednesday because of lead paint. Included :250,000 SpongeBob SquarePants address books & journals; 70,000 Thomas & Friends and Curious George tops and pails; 7,900 Divine Inspiration bracelets' and 14,000 Toby & Me jewelry sets.

This got me thinking about the pool products that are being made cheaply in China/Taiwan. What are the chances that they contain lead paint? I would think pretty good if big companies like Mattel aren't aware of what is going on with their products, do you really think that Fury & others have an idea? Coatings for pool sticks, dyes in cases, the wraps on pool sticks, who knows where this lead paint may be. I think this is just more of a reason for me to stick with American Made.

Just to straighten things out. China and Taiwan are 2 separate Countries at the moment. I haven't heard stuff being recalled from Taiwan as far as lead content on products. It's big news right now all over the world on products from China containing LEAD and FORMALDEHYDE (on food products).

Alls I gotta say is: USA, ALL THE WAY!

Rushing to market under the direction of foriegn "experts" and exposing our people and pets to health hazards has pissed me off:mad: . Is it possible that if they performed adequate quality control to insure our well being that their "deals" wouldn't be that attractive?

I will boycott ALL their products until they have established a track record of getting it right.

One of our dogs was effected by the pet food recall. Needless to say we are pissed! We are in the same boat as you ribdoner.

I am sorry to hear that BVal. I hope he/she is OK now.

I was so pissed to hear about the whole pet food recall thing, as I am a pet lover too. It seems to be getting even more ridiculous now with the toy recall. Anyone who puts children and pets at risk definitely makes the $hit list. After reading this thread, I decided to do a search for pet food made in the USA, and came across this site:

http://www.healthypetnet.com

There are pretty cool features on the site, one being the ability to show a side-by-side comparison of the ingredients of other their food with that of other brands. I just ordered a free sample pack for my cat. :)

There has been a question as to wether some of the chalk made in taiwan contains lead as a few articles stated that pioneer (Taiwan) and Masters (made in Chicago) had lead over the normal limits. The masters rep says the articles are incorrent regarding their product. No one has contacted pioneer yet. Cue sticks probably do not matter, as the finish on them would stop you from ingesting the paint. I do have to agree that we should just be willing to pay a little more, even if we need to have a little less to guarantee that products are up to american standards. That wouldn't hurt our economy either.

chalk would be pretty damned nasty since it gets airborne, and rooms/tables are probably full of the chalk dust that gets kicked up when they clean the tables.....and people tend to chalk their tip near their face.

i always knew poolrooms were bad for one's health.

I am quite sure that no products sold by Sterling Gaming and sourced in China are harmful to the health of the people who use those products.

For Fury cues since that brand was singled out, the cues are made using the EXACT same materials as are used on cues made in the USA and those materials are often purchased from the same suppliers that the US manufacturers use.

John Barton - Fury Cues puveyor, and user. Designer of products for Sterling Gaming, Distributor of billiard cues and accessories.

Read the Jungle or Fast Food Nation if you honesty believe that your food supply is completely safe just because it's "American".

I agree that we should be concerned and we should identify and eliminate things that are dangerous. But please don't make this out to be like it's something that's endemic to China.

China is in the news right now but you can find PLENTY of news about American companies who put out dangerous products. And when identified the problem is corrected and the danger goes away.

Please tell me just one American cuemaker who has a list of ingredients of all of the components that make up their cues? I'd like to see it.

Ebony and Cocobolo dust is extremely harmful to your lungs. I am all for boycotting Ebony and Cocobolo cues or for that matter any cues made by people with Ebony or Cocobolo in their shop because they MIGHT get some dust on me somehow. I'd hate to be changing a weight bolt and have some ebony dust fall on my hand and then wipe my lips and die - all for a pool cue.

I think I am go live in the AMERICAN woods now and SUBSIST on 100% natural American vegetation that was pollenated by imported honeybees.

My Chinese Girlfriend (1960's) use to say ...

... that the Chinese men she dated had very little "lead" in their pencil ... Maybe they were exporting all their lead even back in the 60's ...

I think you guys are on the right track and should make a pledge not to buy any product of any kind not Made in the USA. This would include cars, cues, electronics, clothing and shoes, toys, food and everything else.

Viking Cues are an American Classic, for sure.

Glad to see Mike that we can agree to disagree, but also agree and be honest about it other times. Maybe you will come around & someday I will feel compelled to play in one of your tournaments, as soon as I learn how to draw my ball.:D

Thinking about the items that are being recalled, the id bracelets were curious to me. Is it the metal that contains lead--or some design painted on the bracelet itself? If it is the metal, could the metal latches and hinges on pool cases made in China also contain lead?

To the person that pointed out that you are probably safe with a lead based pool cue, I wouldn't be so sure. Many people sweat when they play pool on the palms of their hands. This could be a big source of lead being transported into your body from these Chinese cues.

John, you state that Chinese cues are made from the same wood as the American cues. I don't doubt your knowledge as I have never known you to embelish to prove your point but please enlighten me. Is this because the wood is shipped from the USA to China, China to USA or from parts unknown to China & the USA?

And John, you normally give an intelligent thought based response. Your dust from ebony argument, I have to say was pretty weak. Obviously the Consumer Product Safety Commission feels strongly enough about these lead products to recall 300,000 lead based Chinese made items. I haven't read any articles about them going after saw mills.:p

Also John, I apologize if I singled out Fury cues. I am sure that there are other cheap Chinese cues that I don't know about. Especially the ones that have fake painted on inlays & designs. Help me put a list together of Chinese made cues & products that possibly could contain lead. How about those pool gloves? Anyone else, please feel free to educate me. To all the people who are aboard the USA wagon, there is plenty more room.

Well as always your sensationalist style is in full force.

I concede. All Chinese products are dangerous, full of lead, and radioactive materials. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA.

You will die if you type anything made on a keyboard made in China. The ink on the keys is made of lead and will kill you, instantly. If you touch anything made in China you will DIE. A horrible, horrible death.

Please only buy 100% American products that have been certified by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee to be 100% produced on American soil by 100% Americans, using parts and materials that only come from within America's contiguous borders.

Mike Gulyassy is a murderer. He had cues produced in China at one point and those dangerous objects are at that this very moment causing a painful death for the people who are using them.

Earl Strickland is a murdered as well. He endorsed Chinese made cues and is directly responsible for the death of thousands of players who would not have used a Cuetec were it not for his endorsement.

Johnny Archer should stand trial for his blatant disregard for human life.

Thorsten Hohmann should never be let into America again for his part in killing users of Lucasi cues. And Buddy Hall should get the chair as well since he endorsed Lucasi cues as well.

So please call your local law enforcement and have these criminals arrested. I will turn myself in immediately.

And for god's sake DON'T TOUCH anything made in China. YOU WILL DIE.

Speaking of sensationalism---thanks for your reply JB. Have you been hanging out at the Jimbo-Land forum again. I think you have a bad case & are in need of some serious treatment.

Sounds like I might have been wrong to think that you didn't embelish your statements. I thought it a bit odd that wood used for pool cues would be shipped all the way to China.

??????John Barton????

You could be over-reacting a little John. It could be time for your medication.
