Do you have a 'get sober quickly' trick/ritual?

Played in a small tournament last night, went undefeated and had to sit for 6 games to let the 'losers bracket' finish out. Had been doing irish car bombs with a seperate Guinness on the side all night and then it hit me... I was kind of drunk. Ordinarily this is fine but getting drunk while cooling down is an issue for me, so I shot around on a spare table and as I feared... I was missing just about everything.

Luckily the bar serves pretzels, so I ate a bag, chugged a water and regained a good bit of my motor skills. Finished out the next game and won. For some reason pretzels and water sober me up a great deal if I'm just 'kind of drunk.'

What tricks do you all use? (I know the best policy is to drink moderatley or not at all but I had just finished all my college assignments for the week and was celebrating lol)

Coffee and bread always worked well for me when I needed it.

My Dad was a Electrical Engineer for a Beer Company back in the 70's. They could drink on break and at lunch. They would take a hit off of a oxygen tank and be good to go.

Activated Charcoal and Vitamin B6. Activated Charcoal absorbs the alcohol still in your stomach and the B6 helps you process the alcohol in your system.

It also greatly reduces the hangover the next day.

Discussing CTE .... oh wait, that makes me sleepy and annoyed.

Water re-hydrates, and carbs can slow absorption but the only real cure is time. In terms of coherence, or minimal gains in motor control, any form of sugar and caffeine can give you a quick high but it will make a hangover worse. You're not actually any more sober though.

If you know you're going to drink, be sure to eat something. Your digestive system keeps the intake in your stomach and the alcohol gets absorbed slowly. When people drink on an empty stomach they get drunk faster because
the alcohol goes quickly to the small intestine and more easily into the blood stream.

The only real way to get sober is over time. Average weight of 175 lbs you can drink maybe one beer, wine or shot per hour. That being said, don't drink and drive.

B6? How? Where? Please show me the biochemistry and cell biology.

Chronic alcohol abuse can deplete your B6 essentially because of liver damage. But B6 has nothing to do with metabolizing alcohol.

The cofactor for alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase, the enzymes in alcohol metabolism, is NAD, which is essentially B3.

There is really nothing you can do to speed up alcohol metabolism, it is metabolized at a constant rate. If you already have liver damage you may metabolize it more slowly.

Activated charcoal is a cute idea. Two problems there. Activated charcoal does not absorb alcohol to any appreciable degree, and alcohol, once swallowed, is absorbed extremely fast.

Even in severe alcohol toxicity we rarely if ever use activated charcoal, and when we do it is really to absorb other toxins the person may have potentially ingested.

Hey! Who let the doctor into our folksy home remedy thread???

I think it's easier to just buy your next opponent a glass of pure 151 rum to congratulate him on his previous victories. You want to be at the same sobriety level or less as your opponent and that's the easiest way.

I like it. It's good for you. Besides, you
start drinking whisky gambling and it gives you
an excuse for losing. That's something you
don't need -- an excuse for losing. How did
you make out in the poker game?

BERT
Sure, you got drunk. That's the best excuse in
the world for losing. No trouble losing when
you got a good excuse. And winning! That can be
heavy on your back too. Like a monkey. You
drop that load too when you got an excuse. All
you gotta do is learn to feel sorry for
yourself. It's one of the best indoor sports:
feeling sorry for yourself -- a sport enjoyed
by all, especially the born losers.
