If you own or have owned a Black Boar you are an interesting part of history.
If you bought a Black Boar either directly from Tony or first hand through a dealer I am interested in talking to you-whether you still own it or not! If you currently own a Black Boar you bought second or third hand I'm interested in talking to you too! Please contact me with your name, where you bought it, date of purchase, location, brief cue description (i.e. how many points, 4? 6? 8?, logo design, and any prominent features). Thank you for your time, and your help!
Sincerely,
The Black Boar Historian
Black Boar is quite popular in my area. Tony is a local cue maker. I can remember when the Black Boars first came to the scene, and many players were ordering one because they were so beautiful.
I overheard Tony speaking to a pro player one year, offering to customize a cue for him. He adapts the cue to the individual player's stroke. I'm not sure how he does it, but he exerts great effort to do so.
Beautiful American custom-made cues are popular overseas, and they seem to gobble them up, without batting an eye. Ironically, the majority of American pool players enjoy purchasing a production cue because of cost in most cases. Cue makers like Tony do business overseas today, and from what I hear, it is a lucrative venture for them.
Located in College Park today, I had thought -- and I may be wrong -- that 20-plus years ago, Tony had a partner (maybe a brother) and was located in Baltimore, near Pimlico racetrack.
There are some Americans who purchase a cue as a collector's item. Recently, I was speaking to a local player in my area, and he told me he bought himself another Black Boar. He already owns about 100 cue sticks of all makes and sizes. I asked him why he bought another Black Boar, since I know he already owns several, and he said he didn't mind spending five figures on it because it is going to go up in value. To him, it was an investment.
Several years ago, Tony custom-made a beautiful shooting cue for WPBA Pro Sueyen Rhee as a year-end prize for being the points winner on the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour.
Here's a picture of Tony of Black Boar, Keith McCready, and Nick Mannino, taken a few years ago in Alexandria, Virginia. Tony sometimes will make a cameo appearance and sweat the local tournaments.
