Do you prefer glue on tip or screw on tip?

Screw on tips limit your tip choices. Basically you are stuck with whatever tip has your screw type. It is also common for the plastic used to crack or shatter on break shots. Screw on tips are typically in the same price range as inexpensive single layer glue on tips, and should perform about the same. However, with another material between the tip and the shaft, some will argue that the feedback will be diminished.

As for the tips themselves, screw on tips are generally two types: single layer soft and single layer very soft. Contrast this with glue on tips which come in many varieties: single layer tips of varying hardness, many layered tips (which I believe are catergorized as laminated tips) - which also have varying hardnesses, and tips from cows, pigs, buffalo, and synthetics.

In my opinion, once you play with a glue on tip, you will never go back - but whatever you decide, just keep playing ;)

Just saw this thread.

Funny stuff.

Stay tuned.....next thread will be:

"Which end of the cue do you use to Break ????":D :D

Followed by an explanation of why swinging the fat end like a baseball bat imparts greater force than a traditional stroke.

my guess is that at least 85% of people that play pool seriously are in the fiber or ivory ferrule category. (I think brass is more for snooker cues)

There are many ivory alternatives (such as ivorine and mylar) that play well too, but a plastic ferrule is almost as much of a no-no as a screw on tip. In other words...they are shitty

I been using a glue on tip and never even seen a screw on tip in real life.

Thanks for clearing a few things about screw on tips.

And yes, i will never stop playing the best sport there is.

Hmm, i think someone could make a screw on tip not made of plastic..

But yeah for tips availables, i think it would not be a good move to put effort into that idea.

I much prefer the more exclusive screw on tip in the same way that I prefer wine from a bottle with a screw on cap. A lesser alternative is the slip on tip.

Both are far preferable to the glued on tip which limits your options.

With the screw on or slip on tips, you can carry a whole pocket full of differents tips like Moori, Kamui, Sniper, LePro, milk dud, etc. and change the tip during the match depending on the shot and table conditions. You can even carry them all in both nickel and dime radius configurations and have almost unlimited shoices. Probably need two pockets at this point.

With the more restricted glue on tip, you lose all of this flexibility.

Uh oh, I just realized that all of the tips I mentioned above, are made from the skins of murdered pigs, so now I guess we a limited to the very hard to find pressed cardboard and phenolic tips.

Does this come in a screw-in type?

I would try the "Fine Corinthian Leather" tips made from the seats of my friend Ricardo Montalban's 1976 Chrysler Cordoba...Check it out!!!

I typically don't use a tip. Tips impart spin and create error in the stroke. Less likely to accidentally put English on the CB if you don't have a tip.

Now there's a man who has really thought about the physics involved in this situation and come to a logical conclusion.

Solves the murdered pig problem too.

I notice you live in California. Have you attached flotation devices to your cues so they will be saved when you fall off into the ocean?

You should always be able to ask questions without being ridiculed. To put it in perspective, that question is like asking a baseball player if they should use a leather glove, or a plastic kids glove. Serious pool players do not consider screw on tips a real viable option. A more appropriate questions would be which type of glue on tip do people prefer. That would, however, boil down to personal preference.

I think you should use a screw on tip and carve the word troll into it so that it will hold chalk.

Would someone please explain to me what a "troll" is? I have been hearing that a lot lately.

Sorry for the stupid question

Pretty insulting post there Dog.Below the belt imo.
To assume he doesn't know the above already is simply unacceptable imo.

I like to buy a cue with a screw on tip.

I would then remove the screw on tip, and put a glue on tip on top.

I like the cavity at the end of the ferrule for the screw to go in--it allows for lesser deflection.

More than 60% of the pros in the world like this kind of set up, so it can't be wrong.

I have heard that some "notable players" also like a wood ferrule, they think it gives them better "feel."

So, I will just remove the plastic ferrule, and leave the wood underneath.

This is my secret to the greatest hitting shaft, please do not tell anyone.

I live on the second floor so they should be safe.

I agree...even a super noob deserves a fair shake...perhaps even more so...BUT this is a little carry over from ivory in your cue means you killed an elephant thread. What a way to join a pool site!

anyhow...to answer honestly...screw the screws.Everyone has glued on tips.

Definately not Cheapies

There were some quality screw ons. ;) Least us not forget the Vintage Palmers with the screw on ferrule and tip combo.
