Does cue weight make a differance???

Not only the weight and balance of the cue but the taper of the shaft can be huge also.

Set the old and new shaft down on the table and see how much different the tapers are.

Plus the shafts can weigh alot more or less. When I say alot, a little is alot when it comes to a shaft!

I had 10 shafts for the cue I was using. All the tapers were different. I took a couple to a cue guy to have it turned down to match the one I liked and it still played bad.

Tip and taper are 2 huge things. I finally bought a predator 314 2. Solved my problem.

Who's cue ,what kind of Cue -What kind of Games ,snooker ,billiards -straightPool

The stick and the ball are combined . Better yet does cue length ,or (shortness) combined with cue weight make a difference .In a race to 100, on a big table -
Does it help in playing a race in Str. Pool to 250 every day-for a month -o
In snooker ?
In Billiards -o
Table lengths (3-6) 4-8 (6-12)
On the cloth,- or Carpet- 90-10 ,70-30 , 80-20 .

I'd work on developing a stroke- weight might not be so important-

L et the cue maker decide- ask them-thats what your paying for secrets, skills from the 1800.s
heavy cue = slight smoother straighter stroke-occasional player. A lighter cue transmits spin to a ball easier. The weight of the cue should suit the stroke and playing style of the individual. From a Pro players point of view.(mark Wilson)

I think you need a lighter cue

I believe that if you are noticing the weight of the cue, either that it seems heavy or that it seems light, your game may suffer a bit. IMHO, the perfect cue for you is a cue that you don't notice or become aware of as you play. If there is a nick in the shaft or a defect in the wrap or if the cue feels heavy or light, then your attention isn't completely on the shot, but partly on the cue.

As other posters have said, if you are lucky and your new Schon has the steel bolt, you can have a cue repair guy swap it out for the aluminum bolt. If your old Schon was under 19 ounces and the new one is over 20 ounces, that's a major difference in weight and probably balance point as well. If you hand me a 20+ ounce cue, I'm not going to be happy playing with it. Anything over 19 ounces feels heavy to me.

I would take the shaft from the old cue and stick it on the new one and give that a whirl. It just may be the shaft has a different flex (rotation? help me out here guys) point. It may be softer, harder ect. The tip may be different. Before replacing bolts, ect give you're original shaft a spin and see what happens. My 2 pennies worth.

play with it for a couple of weeks and the weight thing will probably go away

i heard johnny archer was particular about an exact weight until he saw a facy schon that was 2 oz heavier but he liked thelooks so he took the heavy cue abd won some big champioships
the weight issue wasn't so important after all

probably not so important for the rest of us either,i have played good cues of 22 oz and as light as 17,once i got used to them,it was no problem

i am not sure about all the ballance point talk either, never met a really good player who cared or talked about it

Here are some more ideas on why the cue can feel different:

Balance point. If you have to grab the cue close to the end in order to feel comfortable and everytime you grab more foreword the cue feels awkward than the cue is too back heavy. Any pulling at the back throws the stroke out.
Then there is the weight distribution. Some cues can have the balance point where you want but the weight is in the wrong places and that can throw you off.
Then there is weight, light cue can have a problem moving the ball around with a normal stroke. The other way around with a heavier cue until a point.
Lively vs dead cue, harmonics of the cue, learn a new word :). Some cues require more or less power to perform the same action. Sometimes no power will compensate .
Overall thickness of the butt and where it gets thicker, hands come in different sizes.
Then there is the wrap, some are more slippery than others, hard to control the cue and it feels like it will fallout of your hand so you grab harder, throws everything out.
Fear of damage, tendency to control the cue in your hand more and being higher over the table so you don’t nick the cue. :)

I’m not even going to get into the shaft. List is long………….
Good luck and I mean that!

that is where to start

Have you weighed your new Schon?

Have you weighed your old Schon?

After you do that, determine the balance point for both.

It may be a shift in the balance point that is causing you to shoot poorly.

Just a thought.

This is the best suggestion I have heard. Compare the two cues and find out where the difference is. I have found out over the years that a 19oz
may be 1oz heaver or lighter. very few cues are dead on the money when it comes to the weight. you need a good set of digital scales. Yes check the balance point. Forward balance will make cue feer lighter, Rear bal.
will feel heavy. I am the same way you have got to feel confident in your
mind about a cue. I lake a balance point to be 17.5 to 18.5 with me that makes a 18.5 to 19.5 oz cue feel right to me. Before I started reading P&B
mag. Not sure 1990 or 92 all cues was the same. screw on tip was my pick
with the round washers you could add or remove to adjust the weight.
after reading P&B I made a big move went to the hard ware store they sold cues national . It was a 19 oz had the
big N on the butt cap. I paid a whopping 49.95 my wife said I had lost my mind. Needless to say for the last 40 years I have kept her on a need to know bases. take care, johnqbs

Short answer IMO YES! Long answer, listen, these are the things that affect the mental part of the game more than the physical part. Thing is, IMO the mental part of the game is a much bigger part of the game than the physical.

What kind of cue, what kind of tip, what kind of balance, what kind of weight, what kind of taper, what kind of wrap, what kind of .... what kind of.... It goes on and on.

The thing is, if you are mentally uncomfortable, you will have problems whether these things actually make a difference to the physical part of your game doesn't really matter. If it is affecting the mental part, it is affecting your game.

Now, fixing the problem may involve getting another cue or simply realizing this damned game we play, plays with us too, and you just get this $h!t out of your head and all of a sudden the problem is gone.

This may be the best response I've ever seen! Right on the money!

Remove the rubber bumper of the new cue....It will drop the weight by about an ounce (or more)...and move the balance of the cue forward.

Hit some balls with it off and see how it feels.....

If you like it with out the bumper on the cue and it has the aluminum assembly screw....well....you are screwed...

If it has a linen wrap...you could have it switched out for a leather wrap and it should lighten the cue a bit....but that is about it.

I had the exact same problem with a schon cue....my original cue got stolen and when I bought a replacement cue...it was heavier and I could never get used to it.

I played with it without the rubber bumper for a while...but end result.....I sold the cue...

hi, excuse me if this is an old question, but I really dont know, what exactly is the shaft taper? whats the different between taper and tip? are they different things? I know what the tip is, but taper I don't. when people say "shaft taper" are they talking about the white thing in top of a shaft? Thanks.
