Does the diameter of the tip and shaft always match?

I am ordering a cue and it allows you to pick 2 tip size (13.25mm or 13mm). The standard shaft size for this cue is 13.25mm. Now, if I choose the option for a 13mm tip, does this mean my shaft is also 13mm or do they mount it on a 13.25 shaft?

since you guys built cues, I figure you guys should know the standard practice. thx

Some cuemakers take their last taper cut with ferrules on the shaft. Usually, the shaft would be a few thousandths larger at the back of the ferrule than at the front at the tip. IF a true "pro" taper was used, than there is not supposed to be a difference in size at the front of the shaft. Confusing?

Simply put, the ferrule and shaft should meet seamlessly, with no discernable differences.

I had a similar discussion at the pool hall on Thursday with a cue maker. He was explaining the definition of a conical shaft. i.e. the shaft and ferrule are the same width, but then the shaft gets thicker right away, as opposed to some shafts (non-conical) that stay the same width for part of the shaft before getting thicker. I've no idea what the benefits of each are, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless ...

Another point was that the ideal width should be 10.5mm if you compare the sizes used for snooker and billiards and the size of the respective balls. I mean, why do pool cues have such a wide tip in comparison?

B/c the balls are bigger and heavier?
I can't shoot with a 13MM myself. I like em at 12 and stiff taper.

Hey guys, most are over-analyzing the question. It is obvious from the OP that he is asking a very simple question, that he does not know the answer to. Talk of taper and other issues is probably just making his head spin. When answering a question, please try to determine your audience (the original poster) and their knowledge level.

Housecue: yes, when you order a 13mm tip, it will be on a 13mm shaft, not a 13.25mm shaft.

Me too..... I personally find it harder to shoot with any shafts bigger than 11.5mm-12.25mm.
